PSI: Roofing company leaves unfinished business - February 1, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

FORT MILL, SC (WBTV) - Violent thunderstorms left Shawn Goorey of Fort Mill, SC with a problem.

"I needed a lot of work done to my house," said Goorey.

As we've seen before when storms clear, roofing companies turn up faster than drying pavement.

"They were going door-to-door and what he said I liked," said Goorey.

Goorey ended up hiring one of the door knocking companies. A contractor called Roof 911. Glenn Selby, of Matthews, hired the same company, signed on the same bottom line and wrote a $3,900 deposit check. It was about half the total bill.

Selby said the check cleared last August. No one has yet to touch his roof.

"It's been over 75 days since they took the down payment," said Selby. "There's been absolutely nothing done, no materials dropped, no scheduling of any kind."

Selby and Goorey say they tried everything to reach the company. They've called, sent texts and emails.

"Shut all the phones down, closed all the email accounts pretty much left Charlotte," said Goorey.

Roof 911 had an office in north Charlotte. Its doors are now locked shut and the office has been cleaned out. The company is actually based in Atlanta. WBTV contacted the company and was told it would make things right.

Goorey was skeptical. His main roof was replaced before Roof 911 left town, but some siding and the metal roof over his porch were never fixed.

He estimates he was out $2500.

As he was telling WBTV his story something unexpected happened.

"I thought we would come in and try to step in and be part of the solution and not the problem," said Jeremy Collins.

Collins works for Precision Roof. He was working on Goorey's neighbors roof when he overheard what had happened. He said his company would finish the work at Goorey's home for free.

"Unfortunately when the storms come in that brings a lot of other companies out," said Collins. "As a homeowner myself it's very hard to know who to trust."

"I was having to wait until my tax return to be able to afford to finish out the repairs and now I can put that towards other things," said Goorey.

Collins was also ready to help out Glenn Selby, by fixing his roof with what was left of his insurance money, but then we heard back again from Roof 911. The company said it was getting out of the residential roofing business in Charlotte and would return Selby's deposit.

Roof 911 tells WBTV it had phone issues this past fall and as a result messages from customers weren't getting through.

Consumer experts remind storm victims to get multiple bids for any work, check out companies with organizations like the Better Business Bureau and avoid any company using high pressure sales tactics.

Michelin Names 630 Value-for-Money Restaurants Across France - February 1, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

(For more Bloomberg Muse, click on MUSE <GO>.)

Jan. 31 (Bloomberg) -- Michelin today releases its selection of all the 630 restaurants in France that will be recognized next month for serving good, inexpensive meals.

The Bib Gourmand label indicates a restaurant serving three-course meals offering good value for the money, defined as less than 35 euros ($46) in Paris and 29 euros elsewhere. The selection has increased by 140 percent in six years, with more than 120 additions in 2012 alone.

“These restaurants never fail to delight Michelin guide readers with their wide range of styles, from traditional terroir to trendy gastro-bistro, from ethnic adventure to extremely creative,” Michelin said in an e-mailed release.

Michelin’s guide to France is scheduled to be announced on Feb. 27. The Clermont-Ferrand, France-based company is the world’s second-biggest tiremaker, after Bridgestone Corp. It produced its first guide in August 1900, distributed free of charge (until 1920) and intended for chauffeurs.

Here are the new 2012 Bib Gourmand restaurants, with the locality first, followed by the department in parentheses and the restaurant name:

First Two Added to 'Fish Tank - February 1, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

January 31, 2012 - Atlantic League (AtL) Bridgeport Bluefish (Bridgeport, Conn. - Jan. 31, 2012) - The Bridgeport Bluefish today announced their first additions of the 2012 season, signing infielder Luis Lopez and pitcher Jorge Julio. Lopez will enter his fifth season as a member of the Bluefish, while Julio will return for his second campaign in the Park City.

"The Bluefish are proud to welcome back Luis and Jorge as the first signings of 2012," says Bluefish general manager Bob Goughan. "We are looking forward to the upcoming season and filling out our roster in the weeks to come."

Lopez returns for his seventh season in the Atlantic League and 17th of professional baseball. In 121 games with Bridgeport last year, he recorded a .276 batting average with 67 RBI and 59 runs scored in 456 at-bats and also reached a career milestone by collecting his 2,000th career hit. After four successful seasons in the Park City, Luis is now among the all-time Bluefish batting leaders, ranking second in walks (260), third in hits (543), doubles (93) and RBI (276), and fourth in games played (507), at-bats (1,897) and runs scored (264).

The former Major Leaguer spent two seasons in the big leagues, his first coming in 2001 with the Toronto Blue Jays. He spent the next two years with Sacramento (AAA, Athletics) of the Pacific Coast League before returning to the Major Leagues with the Montreal Expos in 2004. The infielder's best season came in 1997 with Single-A Hagerstown (South Atlantic) when he paced the league in hits (180) and batting average (.358), while posting career-highs in doubles (47), extra-base hits (63) and RBI (99). In 1,666 career minor league games, the infielder owns a .299 batting average with 2,043 hits, 409 doubles, 151 home runs, 1,099 RBI and 1,000 runs scored.

Julio makes his way back for his second season in the Atlantic League and 17th of professional baseball. Last year, the former Major Leaguer was a spring training invitee of the Pittsburgh Pirates organization following a successful 2010 campaign with the Bluefish. However, he suffered an arm injury early in camp and was forced to sit out the 2011 season.

Jorge appeared in 55 games for the Bluefish in 2010, striking out 57 batters over the course of 55 innings of work. He finished second in the Atlantic League with 28 saves and ended the season with a stellar 1.15 ERA, the lowest single-season mark for a Bluefish pitcher (minimum 50 innings pitched). Julio also held opposing batters to a .193 batting average and proved to be one of the best hurlers in the Atlantic League last year.

Over his nine-year big league career, the 33-year-old has also spent time with the Baltimore Orioles, New York Mets, Arizona Diamondbacks, Florida Marlins, Colorado Rockies, and Cleveland Indians. He has recorded 17 wins and 99 saves over 453 appearances. Jorge owns a 4.43 ERA with 448 strikeouts in 467 innings pitched, while holding opposing hitters to a .244 batting average. His best season in the Majors came in 2002 as a member of the Orioles. The righthander posted career-bests with a 1.99 ERA, five victories and 67 appearances, while recording 25 saves and 55 strikeouts in 68 innings pitched.

The Bridgeport Bluefish Professional Baseball Club, a charter team in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, plays its home games at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard, located off Exit 27 of I-95 on the corner of Broad Street and South Frontage Road in Bridgeport. 2012 season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 203-345-4800. Lake relaunches rebate program

    Gerbasi, Chris

    Staff Report

After a positive response in 2011, Lake County has relaunched the Go Green Get Green rebate program with $150,000 in available funds.

The program, which went into effect Monday, provides rebates to small commercial businesses and residents who install certain approved Energy Star products. The average household spends more than $2,200 on energy bills each year, with nearly half going toward heating and cooling costs.

Savings from Energy Star products include: a heat pump can trim 30 percent to 40 percent off a power bill; a qualified gas furnace is 10 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace; a qualified heat pump water heater can save nearly $300 a year compared to a standard electric water heater; a qualified solar water heater can cut water heating bills by 50 percent; a qualified gas tankless water heater can cut water heating expenses by 30 percent; sealing and insulating ducts can improve a heating and cooling system's efficiency by 20 percent.

Rebates are available for Lake County residents and small commercial business owners only, on a first-come, first-served basis. All upgrades, with the exception of appliances, must be installed by a registered or certified contractor with the state of Florida with a qualified license and be registered as a licensed contractor in Lake County.

The Department of Energy awarded $2.8 million to the county through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant. More than $825,000 of those funds were dedicated to the rebate program in 2011 to increase energy efficiency and create local jobs in the county. Those funds were distributed by September 2011.

For a complete list of rebates and program information, go to http://www.gogreen.lakecountyfl.gov or call (352) 343-9700. New Jersey Home Remodeling Company Interior Excellence Launches New Website – Interior Excellence LLC - February 1, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

After more than 32 years providing homeowners with basement, bathroom, and kitchen remodeling and redesign, Interior Excellence LLC announces the launch of a new website and new opportunities for NJ residents.

Bridgewater, NJ (PRWEB) January 31, 2012

Interior Excellence LLC recently announced the launch of their new website and is changing the way home remodeling is done in New Jersey.

In these difficult times one thing remains constant: owning a home requires ongoing maintenance. Despite the rhetoric of foreclosures and financial difficulties in the world, most people are well managed and in stable condition (financially).

If a home is allowed to enter a state of disrepair, it can lead to many snowballing problems. An example may be a broken down bathroom which can cause water leakage to lower floors and even cause fires when coming in contact with electrical wires. Remodeling or renovating problem area's within a house not only solve existing issues with your home, but provide additional space for your family to socialize.

Interior Excellence takes a different approach to home remodeling than most companies. Myles Albert, the owner of Interior Excellence, has more than thirty two years of experience which helps keep the remodeling process quick, clean, and easy to understand for his clients. As Interior Excellence also provides design services included in the project, the entire remodeling process is streamlined compared to traditional contractors and provides a "one-stop shopping" solution.

One concern amongst most homeowners is the time it takes for a typical remodeling project to finish. Instead of juggling multiple jobs and leaving your home half-finished, Myles only works on one project at a time.

This keeps your project quick, and the inconvenience to your family at a minimum. As the dust and dirt from a construction project can easily spread throughout a house, Myles takes the time vacuum and clean up the workspace after each day.

Clients are also encouraged to get involved in the selection of materials to be used in the project. Using deep discounts that Interior Excellence has acquired throughout various New Jersey remodeling stores, customers receive savings on project materials that many home remodeling services keep to themselves.

In an effort to help his customers better understand what kind of service he offers, Myles recently redesigned and launched a new website in order to showcase the work he's been providing for all these years. In addition to providing a portfolio of past work (http://interiorexcellencellc.com/newjersey/portfolio/), Myles also maintains a blog which is updated regularly with industry news and articles.

New Jersey residents looking to reach out to Myles are encouraged to call 908-218-0200 or visit his website at http://www.interiorexcellencellc.com.

One World Trade Center under construction - February 1, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

One World Trade Center, the central skyscraper at Ground Zero, stands under construction on January 30, 2012 in New York City. The price tag for One World Trade has recently been valued at $3.8 billion, which would make it the world's most expensive new office tower. Most of the cost overruns are due to the security measures being taken in the design of the building which sits on a site that has been bombed twice by terrorists. To offset the costs of One World Trade Center, which is being built by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, higher bridge and tunnel tolls have been instated and there has been a reduction in spending on transportation infrastructure. The 1,776-foot skyscraper is expected to be completed at the end of 2013. Photo: Spencer Platt, Getty Images / 2012 Getty Images
