An unmistakable musty odor hits visitors as they walk inside Monongahela Elementary Center.
The first thing they see is mold growing throughout the 90-year old building.
Walking through the building Monday, Ringgold school board Vice President Bill Stein turned the corner into a familiar room to see mold rising up the wall to meet paintings of children.
This was the cafeteria yeah, kids ate in here, Stein said.
Mold is also growing under the tile floor and up the side of a wall in the halls, causing lockers to rust. It is present in the carpets of the former computer lab. Mold and water damage has caused the paint to peel off the walls.
The building was the home of Monongahela High School until Ringgold High School opened in Carroll Township in 1979. The the building was converted to an elementary center before it was closed in 2011.
At the same time, the district closed Donora Elementary Center, the former Donora High School building, which had served the district since 1930. At one time, Ringgold considered a plan to reopen the buildings and renovate them for use as middle schools.
The board ultimately decided to pursue construction of a middle school at the Carroll Township site that houses the high school. That building would replace Ringgold Middle School formerly Finley Middle School which is shifting slightly because of pyrite beneath the surface.
The district expects the new middle school to be ready for the start of the 2017-18 school year.
The board recently authorized architect HHSDR to submit documents applying for funding under PlanCON.

WELLBORN, Texas - Nearly three and a half years after College Station annexed the community of Wellborn, a new city service is coming to that area.
Crews are installing a sewer line for residents and businesses.
News 3 take a closer look at the project and some of the challenges of offering city sewer services in Wellborn for the first time.
The smell of food permeates the Hullabaloo Diner in Wellborn even on a day they aren't serving customers but prepping food.
Richard Risbon, the Manager and Executive Chef, is thrilled to see work on a project finally starting just a short distance away.
"When I saw 'em doing construction I was like you know joyous," he said.
College Station is installing a nearly $1.5 million sewer line as required after annexing the area in 2011. Residents and businesses will have the option of tapping into it.
Risbon can't wait to ditch his septic system. He spends $2,000 to maintain it each year.
"I would like to install another bathroom you know with the volume of customers we had, there's usually a line and with a septic I can't, I can't expand into that yet," Risbon added.
One issue the city still has to sort out is how much to charge these new customers. The residents get their water from the Wellborn Special Utility District and the city doesn't know how much water will be going into this new sewer system.

EDWARDSVILLE Two front porches were damaged and two cars were smashed during a wreck on Church Street Tuesday afternoon.
Authorities told Newswatch 16 that a 17-year-old driver was taken to the hospital, after the car he was driving smashed into a front porch, a parked car and a utility pole around 1 p.m.
The parked car was shoved onto the front porch of another home, and utility lines dropped onto the street after the utility pole snapped.
People who live nearby said theyre worried about the young driver who was taken to the hospital, but theyre thankful that their home was not damaged.
It was loud, so loud that I left the house and came outside here. I looked up the street and I saw the crash, said Michelle Salgado. Very lucky, thank God on that one. Ive got five kids so Im very lucky.
The teenage driver was treated and released from the hospital.
Police believe he was speeding when he crashed and said charges or citations will be filed.

One Week Baths generous donation to remodel the Aquariums two public restrooms and a staff bathroom provide a much-needed upgrade to our facilities, said Aquarium Director Heather Doyle. The total experience for our visitors is important to us and now that will include our brand new restrooms.
The project is slated to take five days, starting Monday August 4, ending Friday August 8th. The crews are working in evening hours to minimize disruption to summer visitors. Materials sponsors include Daltile, Ferguson, Kohler, BY Marble, Wellborn, Dunn Edwards and Home Depot.
