Construction of Lee-Ogle transit facility delayed, bids over budget - April 17, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

DIXON Construction on a new transit facility has been delayed because all of the bids came in over budget.

The Lee-Ogle Transportation System building will be in the industrial park at Interstate 88 and state Route 26.

Construction will start in June at the earliest, about a month behind schedule, said Kathy Lalley, LOTS acting administrator.

On March 30, the projects engineer received seven bids for the project, all of which came in over the $1.8 million budget, officials said. All seven also had technical errors, disqualifying them from consideration.

The agencys options are to seek more money or scale down the facility so as to reduce its costs, officials said.

The engineer is scaling back the project, but that wont take long, Lalley said.

We already know which items that we dont have to put in the building right away, she said. As much as I want a sprinkler system in the building, its not necessary under the code.

The building will provide more indoor storage for buses, which will mean less wear and tear on the vehicles.

It also will include a mechanical area and a wash bay, which is expected to save money. The agencys dispatchers will be consolidated there.

Under the new schedule, the building is expected to be ready by February.

CHINA GROVE When Corriher Heights Baptist Church was struck by lightning nearly a year ago, it was devastating, but the church rebounded and are looking forward to rebuilding.

The church, located at 1980 N.C. 153, was struck causing extensive damage in April, and immediately the church had offers from other churches to worship with them, but Pastor Chris Pethel had other plans.

The church cleared out their fellowship hall and began having church that following Sunday and every Sunday since.

New Grace Church of Concord donated some pews to the China Grove church.

On Saturday, members of the church gathered to break ground during an 11 a.m. service.

Weve been working on this since the church burned, Pethel said.

Church reopens for Palm Sunday after burglary, arson - April 2, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    SALISBURY, Pa.

A church renovation is complete, and the congregation celebrated its strength after overcoming a burglary and arson that halted construction in December.

It's been a long four months for the Oak Dale Mennonite Church in Salisbury.

The church had a lot to clean up, but said Palm Sunday marked a new beginning, in a new building.

"Wow, we can't believe it's come from this to this. It's an incredible transformation," Pastor Joe Byler said.

Hearing the reaction from the congregation was enough for Pastor Joe Byler.

Sunday marked the first service in the church since vandals broke in in December.

"The contractors told us it would be 4 to 6 months, so we're in about 2 months earlier than we first expected, which was very good," Byler said.

Where the scorched tables and chairs once stood, sits a new row of tables.

The graffiti and profanities written on the walls are now covered up with fresh paint.

Apartment project in historic area draws flak - April 2, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By F.M. Wiggins

PETERSBURG - City Council will likely soon decide on whether to allow the development of a controversial 12-unit apartment building at the west end of High Street.

The upcoming vote on the project - which would be new construction on an existing lot - comes after a March 20 public hearing where numerous residents of the High Street neighborhood said that they wouldn't welcome the development. The next City Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday.

The project has received mixed opinions from residents, city officials and historic preservationists. Petersburg preservation planner James Sved said that the city's Architectural Review Board has already denied the project three times - most recently on Jan. 25 - despite recommendations from staff for approval.

Sonja Reese, who has lived on High Street for 40 years, said that City Council should listen to the Architectural Review Board and experts from within the city who have provided opinions on the planned development. Reese cited Willie Graham, a noted architectural expert who she said works for Colonial Williamsburg, as having opposed the project.

The developer, Canterbury High Street LLC, plans to build an infill multi-family housing unit of 12 one-bedroom apartments. The developer already owns an adjacent two-story commercial structure with a missing facade. That building has already received a certificate of appropriateness for development as a mixed-use project.

During the March 20 City Council meeting, no architectural renderings were presented for the public to view.

"Why don't you see any renderings for this project," asked Richard Stewart. "Shouldn't we see a rendering?"

Stewart said that High Street is one of the most historic areas in the city and any decision should be carefully evaluated.

Zoning for the property is not an issue as the land for the proposed infill development is currently zoned B2, according to Director of Planning Sharon Williams. However, because it is in an historic district, the development would need a Certificate of Appropriateness, which has been denied by the ARB three times.
