Plus: 'Rapper's Delight,' Prince and the Revolution's 'Purple Rain' soundtrack, 'A Charlie Brown Christmas,' and many more
For a lot of people, disco never died. For others, it came back to life in the past 15 years, as James Murphy's DFA label and production team, Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton's essential history Last Night a DJ Saved My Life, and the rediscovery of eclectic dance savant Arthur Russell combined to help free the pioneering sounds of long-shuttered New York City spaces like the Loft and the Paradise Garage from Comiskey-demolition backlash. And yet when Donna Summer, the queen of disco, died last week at age 63 after suffering from cancer, some obituaries failed to mention perhaps her most influential hit: 1977's "I Feel Love."
The record is about to be set straight. The Library of Congress has announced it has chosen "I Feel Love" and several other classics for induction into its National Recording Registry. Other recordings being honored include Sugarhill Gang's 1979 "Rapper's Delight," Prince and the Revolution's 1984 Purple Rain soundtrack, Parliament's 1975 Mothership Connection, Vince Guaraldi Trio's 1970 A Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack, Dolly Parton's autobiographical 1971 "Coat of Many Colors," Love's 1967 Forever Changes, Booker T. & the M.G.'s 1962 "Green Onions," and the Grateful Dead's 1977 show at Cornell University's Barton Hall (which you don't have to be a Deadhead to love, for what it's worth). Two Bo Diddley songs also made the cut, along with various pre-rock recordings.
With its completely synthetic backing, "I Feel Love" paved the way for house, techno, and the electronic pop currently dominating the charts. Producers Giorgio Moroder and Pete Beloitte used four cabinets of Moog synthesizers to achieve the instrumental arrangement, at a time when using a synth was, compared with today's software-based environments, almost a live performance. The Library of Congress points out that Brian Eno once said the track would "change the sound of club music for the next 15 years." He might have been understating things.
As you can see from the names above, Summer's smash has some illustrious competition in the latest round of National Recording Registry inductees, from the hit that helped popularize rap to a classic Stax soul instrumental. Check out the full list below, in chronological order, after a clip of Patrick Cowley's 15-minute "I Feel Love" remix, and find out more about the Registry's new additions at the Library of Congress' website.

RACINE, Wis., May 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 180,000 bugs[i] will pass through your yard this summer, and with this year's abnormal weather conditions, bugs may be even more prevalent than ever[ii]. On top of that, seasonal weather damage gives some bugs an easy entry point into your home through cracks and other areas.
To educate families on the best ways to identify and beat bugs this summer, Raid is partnering with Steven Kutcher, who has 35 years of experience as an entomology consultant in Hollywood and worked on more than 100 movies involving bugs, including "Spiderman," "Arachnophobia" and "National Treasure 2." Known as the "Bug Guy" in Hollywood, Kutcher has learned quick and easy ways to keep bugs under control.
"Working with bugs on the big screen is one thing, but dealing with a bug problem in your home is no laughing matter," says Kutcher. "Atypical and fluctuating weather conditions have caused the bug season to start earlier, leaving many homes vulnerable to unwanted bug infestations."
With Raid and Steven's easy tips, homeowners can help protect their home and attack unwanted bugs. In addition to the already robust lineup of Raid products, Raid has added Raid Max Bed Bug & Flea Killer and Raid Ant Gel to its portfolio.
"With the new offerings from Raid, our focus this year is to provide homeowners with the education and tools they need to be prepared for bug problems they may face this season," says Kelly M. Semrau, Senior Vice President Global Corporate Affairs, Communication and Sustainability at SC Johnson.

The sale, which started 12 years ago to help match grants the city received for the renovation of the Historic Depot, now raises money used to pay the annual escrow payment on Depot Park, as well as any upkeep or maintenance at the depot.
This year looks like it could be a potentially great year, Main Street Russellville Executive Director Betsy McGuire said. Its amazing how much stuff weve had donated.
Passers-by of the depot may notice workers preparing for the sale outside, and are likely to see an array of televisions, furniture, office accessories, books, old doors and window frames, art, bikes, clothes, and just about anything else.
This year, it is literally amazing, McGuire said. We have some really nice furnishings, some nice decorative items and some really wonderful clothes.
Francis Parker, who has coordinated Rummage since its first sale, said she anticipates having more items than last year.
The furniture end is really full, and we still lack several deliveries, Parker said. We have so many books, were having to bring them inside.
Last year, the sale brought in a little more than $5,000, according to McGuire. McGuire said the most the sale has made was about $10,000, with the least falling just short of $5,000.
The cost of the annual escrow payment on Depot Park is $4,888, McGuire said.
While those working the sale wont accept donations after 10 a.m. today, Parker said those wishing to donate beforehand are welcome to bring just about anything but clothes, due to an over-abundance of such items.

The Hounds

We aren't actually remodeling the dogs, of course. Although if that were possible ...
I bring them up because at first they were an obstacle to the project. (Note to self: "Obstacle" would be a good dog name.) Boarding two Lab-sized mutts for weeks and weeks would have been prohibitively costly. Instead, family friends (who have a dog of their own) came to the rescue. They have dog-sat.
The mutts return to our house for weekend furloughs, during which the poor creatures wonder, "What has happened to the place?" and, more important, "Where has the best dog-nap couch gone?" and "What time is supper?"

Kanye and Kim Kardashian have some weird chemistry when its actually time to pose for pics together.
The made-for-the-paparazzi couple hit up the red carpet together for the first time earlier today for the screening of Cruel Summer, a short film written, produced and directed by Kanye. The film premiered at Cannes as a 7 screen experience, described as a fusion of short film and art installation, and features a few of Kanyes good friends like comedian Aziz Ansari and Kid Cudi as well as Lebanese actress Razane Jammal and Palestinian actor Ali Suliman.
Kim stepped out in a Balmain dress from the 2012 Resort collection paired with black Guiseppe Zanotti for Balmain boots while Kanye opted for a cream colored suit jacket, jeans and loafers.

This photo gets the thumbs up!
Last year, Zoe Saldana wore a the same dress with a slight alteration to the Miami premiere of Colombiana.

Cruel Summer, cute couple!
Kim Kardashian was the best plus-one ever for beau Kanye West at Wednesday's Cannes Film Festival premiere of Cruel Summer, the rapper's new art film/art installation.
PHOTOS: All the stars at Cannes
The reality star, 31, wore a jaw-dropping gold-and-cream Balmain dress with a plunging neckline and super-short hem, paired with sexy ankle boots. (The frock has already been worn by Katy Perry, Zoe Saldana and other stars.) West, 34, complemented his love of nearly three months in a white shirt, cream jacket, denim and black loafers.
According to a source, the couple "were inseparable" at the afterparty for Cruel Summer, one of the first projects of West's Donda creative firm. The twosome were "kissing in the back the whole time." (West's buddy Jay Z, sans wife Beyonce, showed up to support his frequent collaborator.)

On Tuesday, Kardashian told Us Weekly that she's having a blast at this year's star-studded film fest. "It's my first time to cannes and it's amazing! I love it here!"

Construction crews and maintenance workers continue to work on the Wayland Baptist University campus in preparation for what could be record enrollment in the fall of 2012. The last two years have seen an increase in student enrollment on Waylands Plainview campus, and indicators show that the 2012-13 school year may be no different.
In an attempt to meet the needs of the students, several projects are taking place at Wayland this summer, including the completion of Jimmy Dean Hall. Along with the dorm, the University Center also is being renovated to make it more accommodating to students. Also, the Wheeler Building will be remodeled to add locker rooms for athletics teams.
The new mens dormitory, which was officially named Jimmy Dean Hall at a special announcement March 22, will take the place of existing McDonald Hall, which has fallen into disrepair. Wayland officials looked at the cost of renovating McDonald Hall, but determined that bringing the aging building up to code would not have been cost effective. Vice President for Enrollment Management Dr. Claude Lusk said the cost per square-foot to renovate McDonald would have been more than the cost per square-foot to build the new dorm.
Dean Hall also will provide an additional 250 beds. The added space for male students will allow Ferguson Hall to revert to a womens dorm, accommodating the growth of Waylands womens population.
Construction of the dorm is taking into account green technologies in all electrical and plumbing fixtures. The outdoor area also will be ecologically friendly. The courtyard of the dorm features four collection pools and tanks that will collect rain water as it drains. The water then will be used to assist in irrigation around the structure. The dorm also will feature increased security, making use of coded keyless entry systems and other precautions.
Although McDonald Hall will not be used as housing next fall, the historic dorm is providing much-needed office space during the summer. As part of the renovation and remodeling plans, Waylands University Center has been gutted and will be reconfigured to become more user-friendly for students. Due to construction in the building, all of the offices housed in the UC, along with the university store, moved to McDonald for the summer.
The University Center renovations include an updated cafeteria, giving students easier access to food and drink stations. The long table seating will be replaced by more intimate round tables to better simulate a dining experience. While changing the seating structure will remove some seats, the cafeteria will increase the number of operating hours throughout the day, allowing more flexibility in eating times for students.
Other changes to the University Center will include the remodeling of the student lounge area. Petes Place, located in the basement, will reopen as a coffee shop, serving Starbucks products to students.
The area also will house a grill and a stage area with lighting and sound systems. The south portion of the basement will be turned into offices for student activities and student government.
The courtyard area also will be remodeled, and actions will be taken to control the bird population in the outdoor area.

Acuity Brands Launches the ROAMview Lighting Control System, Extending the Company's ROAM Roadway Technology into Site and Area Lighting
The ROAMview system provides property owners and small municipalities the ability to efficiently manage outdoor lighting using a wireless monitoring and control system.
ATLANTA - Acuity Brands, Inc. (NYSE: AYI; "Company"), a market leader in innovative energy-efficient lighting and controls solutions, introduces the ROAMview(TM) lighting control system, an expansion of the Company's ROAM suite of industry-leading wireless outdoor lighting monitoring and control systems. ROAMview features a pre-configured server and software package that can be easily deployed in smaller site, area or roadway applications such as car dealerships, shopping malls and campuses.
The ROAMview system allows property owners and small municipalities to efficiently operate and maintain their outdoor lighting by taking advantage of the optimal lighting performance, energy savings and reduced maintenance costs that the ROAM technology suite offers. With its pre-configured server and gateway, the ROAMview system simply connects to a user's existing computer network, enabling control and monitoring from any computer within the user's organization.
The intuitive, browser-based portal provides ease of control for grouping outdoor lighting fixtures, and easily applies customer-defined schedules for precise on/off and dimming. Events or holidays that require specific lighting patterns are conveniently accommodated in the ROAMview portal's simple drag-and-drop time-clock scheduling screen.
"With the addition of the ROAMview system to our product line, we can now offer all property owners a powerful suite of capabilities and features similar to those used by large municipalities," said Terry Utterback, Acuity Brands Lighting Vice President and ROAM Value Stream Leader. "Without trenching a single foot of wire, they can go from circuit-based control to individual fixture control. The system tracks and reports individual fixture performance, and reports outages so that they can be quickly addressed. It eliminates the need for night-time audits, the waste of day-burning lights and the elevated risks associated with lighting outages."
The ROAMview system is simple to install and commission. Wireless ROAM nodes are installed on each fixture, attaching to an industry-standard NEMA twist-and-lock receptacle. As soon as the pre-configured server and gateway are energized, the system can begin to form its self-configuring, self-healing mesh network. It takes only a few hours to set up fixture groups and begin controlling lights.
