The plan is in early stages, but following a successful trial on Becher Chase day at the end of 2012, the fences will be formed around birch and plastic cores rather than the traditional wooden stakes to make a kinder fence in this years race (6 April).
The fences outwardly will remain the same, but will have with a softer core to be more forgiving, following the deaths of two horses, including Gold Cup winner Synchronised, in last years Grand National.

If good fences make good neighbors, it logically follows that ugly fences get neighborhoods riled up, said Beaumont City Councilman Mike Getz during discussion of an ordinance to control the type of fences visible from the street in Old Town.
The Council voted unanimously to approve an ordinance banning all fences except wood, wrought iron or brick in the Oaks Historic District, which was established in 1993 to preserve the historic character of the Old Town neighborhood. An overlay of city ordinances like the new one concerning fences is part of this effort.
The ordinance was proposed after an Old Town resident built a sheet metal fence that was deemed unsuitable to the character of the neighborhood, according to city documents.
Old Town residents are now prohibited from building fences (visible from the street) of sheet metal, chain link, concrete block, barbed wire or other building material without a variance from city council. The new ordinance also specifies height and location requirements, which are conditional.
Exceptions can be made for fences not in compliance if the applicant can prove it is historically sensitive or if absence of the fence poses significant hazard to life or property.
Getz said sheet metal fences are a hazard during hurricanes and also have other drawbacks, including being prone to rust and presenting a cutting hazard to children.
He proposed that the city have a work session to discuss expanding a fence ordinance to other neighborhoods in the city, not just Old Town.

Ben Rush Elementary Demolition, Redmond, WA (1-14-13)
This was the last day of the demolition of Ben Rush Elementary School in Redmond, Washington (suburb of Seattle). At 1:45, the Cheetah statue (school mascot), that was in the central courtyard, emerges from the rubble (on the left, right behind one of the power shovels). Then, at 3:22, it is gently lifted and carried away, to be installed when the entryway of the new building is completed in the next phase of construction. At the end, you can see the mass of cars lining the street (along with a few school buses), as parents arrive to pick up students at the end of the day. Music: La Banda Bassalti: "Tanto pp tigr (Tiger rag)" (from YouTube music library)

Demolition of squatter houses halted -

KUALA LUMPUR: THE demolition of several squatter houses in Kampung Federal here yesterday was halted when residents protested against the low compensation and questioned the status of the foreign workers assigned to do the job.
Two of the six workers left when residents asked the police to check if they were illegal immigrants.
Earlier, there was a heated exchange between Bagan Dalam assemblyman A.Tanasekharan and Barisan Nasional area coordinator David Chua when the land owner arrived with a court bailiff and police personnel to demolish several houses vacated by 13 squatter families.
Chua said it was improper for the land owner to compensate the squatter families only RM1,000 to RM5,000 to vacate the houses in Jalan Siram, but Tanasekharan, a lawyer, countered that they had to respect the eviction order issued a year ago.
Tanasekharan said the state had offered hardcore poor housing units in Ampang Jajar for rental at RM100 a month as a temporary measure.
He said the state government was willing to pay the transport charges for them to move out, and also help them apply for low-cost units later.
Chua said the families are unable to pay the rent, and asked the authorities to move them directly into the free low-cost units instead.
He said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who is also the MP for Bagan, had failed in his duty to resolve the matter.
Both the land owner and the residents had earlier agreed to defer the demolition to settle the issue amicably, but the matter dragged on for two years because the families wanted higher compensation.
Mohd Ariff Megat Kechik, 40, said he was willing to relocate only if the land owner gave a better compensation, but not the RM4,000 currently offered to him.

Jessica Ennis said it would be a "huge shame" for Sheffield to lose the Don Valley Stadium
The demolition of Sheffield's Don Valley athletics stadium would be a "huge shame" for the city, Olympic champion Jessica Ennis has said.
Earlier this month the BBC revealed the stadium, where the gold-medal winner trains, could be knocked down to save Sheffield council money.
But demolishing the stadium "sends the wrong message", said Ennis.
No decisions have been made and demolition was just one of a list of money-saving options, the council said.
Sheffield Council faces making 50m of cuts in 2013-14 on top of 140m cuts already made in the last two years.
A council document seen by the BBC, showed the authority could save 500,000 per year if the Don Valley Stadium, which was opened in 1991 for the World Student Games in Sheffield at a cost of 29m, was to close.
It raised the possibility of reopening the city's smaller Woodburn Road Athletics Stadium, which was closed 18 months ago to save money.
