Architects, Strongsville City Schools present ideas for new middle school, high school renovations - January 17, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

STRONGSVILLE- Open, inclusive, unique and on-budget.

Thats how representatives from GPD Group and Strongsville City Schools broke down the comprehensive construction and renovation projects lying ahead after residents approved $81 million in new bonds at the first of two community meetings Jan. 10 at Strongsville High School.

Its your community, its not ours, said Rodwell King, a project manager at the Akron-based architecture and engineering firm. We dont live here, you live here, so it really needs to be your school.

About 75 residents heard an hour long presentation outlaying both the goals of the firm and the district, and the steps needed to reach them.

GPD Principal Mark Salopek said there will be a number of opportunities for residents to be involved with and up to speed on the design process of a brand new middle school to replace Center and Albion middle schools and renovations across the district, including submitting suggestions and questions directly to he and King or participating in several meetings to come.

Were starting from scratch, he said. We want to get everyone involved.

    Cost

The architects and Superintendent John Krupinski also laid out estimates for how the $81 million will be spent.

This is not just a construction project of amiddle school, said Krupinski. Its much, much more than that.

According to current estimates, $46.665 million will go toward the middle school replacing Center and Albion middle schools with a single, grades 6-8 building. About $656,000 of that will be for constructing athletic fields and a track.

Architects pitch Ringgold Middle plans - January 17, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Published: Tuesday, January 15, 2013, 1:06a.m. Updated: Tuesday, January 15, 2013

After two architects pitched preliminary plans for a new Ringgold Middle School during a facilities committee meeting, school board President Mariann Bulko said the board will vote Wednesday to hire one in an effort to move forward with the project.

I was told, do not flinch, do not blink, dont look over my shoulder ... just move ahead, Bulko said after nearly two hours of presentations.

Im trying to do something that has not been done as president of the board. Weve been saying for years that we were going to build a new middle school. Im really hoping that this will unite the district.

She said the students are united.

They want this, but its the parents and adults that are fighting, Bulko said. We have seven municipalities that make up Ringgold. Thats the biggest challenge, bringing everyone together, and we have some board members that are trying to divide it even further.

Hayes Large Architects LLP and HHSDR Architects and Engineers are competing for the job.

Hayes Large opened the meeting by submitting its plan for the grades five through eight building, which will be near the high school.

Both plans would be at the same site.

The cost estimate for the Hayes Large building is $26.2 million, including construction costs, $21.3 million, and other costs, $4.9 million. The size would be 126,000 square feet.

Canterbury architects want historic Lyttelton building saved - January 17, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

A group of Canterbury architects are fighting to save the Lyttelton Tunnel's control building, which was severely damaged in the February earthquake.

It served as the gateway from the port to Canterbury for 50 years, and is one of the few historic buildings remaining in the city.

The famous landmark was designed by Peter Beaven, who was said to be inspired by Canterburys founding settlers who arrived on the first four ships.

Canterbury Institute of Architects (CIA) chair David Hill is one of those who admires its design.

It's a fantastic piece of architecture, he says.

It's one of the few contemporary buildings to have a Historic Places Trust category one listing, but suffered serious structural damage in the February quake.

CIA president David Sheppard is calling for more time.

Take another look at it before the bulldozers demolish what has definitely become a landmark building in the Christchurch scene, he says.

Locals struggle to share their architectural enthusiasm.

It's not the prettiest building in my opinion, says resident Brian Rick.
