While most of us had visions of sugarplums dancing in our heads, North American Roofing was busy finishing the roof installation of Sierra Nevada's East Coast brewery under construction in Mills River, NC, 12 miles south of Asheville.

Local Roots, Now Employee-Owned

Commercial developer Carl Verble founded North American Roofing in 1979, partnering with Firestone Tire and Rubber in Indianapolis. North American Roofing began building the company around a team and family model. Recruiting and hiring was based on attitude and integrity rather than what typical contractors of the day did, which was to hire day laborers willing to toil in harsh weather and often dangerous conditions, but who didn't have a vested interest in growing a business.

By 1984 the company had made it to Fortune 500s Top Ten Fastest Growing Companies and in 1993 the company relocated to Asheville, NC, under the leadership of Carls son, Michael. Current CEO Brian Verble took over the reins in 2006, and much like his grandfather and father before him, focuses on employees as family.

So much so, that last year the company transitioned to an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) and that move puts the companys 500 employees in a position to control North American Roofings bottom line.

The more vested anyone is in anything, the better the outcome for success, Verble said. Our employees see it as an investment in their future, as something they are a part of, and that is reflected in how customers are treated and respected.

Our net profit increased by 8.0% to $4.2 billion ** (3.2 billion), thanks to the higher sales volume and a continued cost focus. Meanwhile, IKEA continued lowering prices for customers and further improved product quality. Over the past decade, IKEA has continued to lower prices to customers.

IKEA US FY12 comparable store sales grew by 8%, total sales grew by 11%.

In FY12, we managed to grow in most markets. The markets where we grew the most were China, Russia and Poland, closely followed by the US and Germany. US Sales and Services: US comparable store sales grew by 8% in FY12 and total sales grew by 11%. These price reductions were part of IKEAs continued effort to make products accessible to the many people, while not compromising quality.
