Brecklands cabinet has agreed to end a free service dealing with infestations of rats and mice in a bid to save taxpayers money against the recommendations of fellow councillors.
To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.
The decision was made on Tuesday to withdraw the districts pest control service from April 2014 a move which could save the authority 46,100 per year.
Currently the council, through a contractor, will deal with rodent problems in domestic properties for free, while it charges for the treatment of insects including wasps, fleas and bed bugs. All services are chargeable to commercial properties.
An officers report to the cabinet says money could be saved by stopping the pest control service, and sign-posting people to commercial suppliers instead.
It says this could be achieved without affecting the councils legal obligations, and that the service had not been identified as a priority in its Could We Should We consultations with the public.
But members of the councils overview and scrutiny commission raised concerns about the proposals earlier this month.
A report from the commission says: In particular there was concern that people would be troubled by rats from a neighbouring property where the neighbour was not willing to pay to have the problem treated. It would be incumbent on the council to take action and therefore unlikely that money would be saved.

City & Country Pest Control (http://www.cityandcountrypestcontrol.com), the leader in residential, industrial, and commercial pest eradication and humane wildlife and bird removal, is issuing a warning to residents of the Greater Toronto Area about handling raccoons and other wildlife.
While there is no official count, the Ministry of Natural Resources estimates there are as many as 100 raccoons per square kilometre in Toronto. At roughly 641 square kilometres, that translates into 641,000 raccoons, says Horacio Parreira, owner of City & Country Pest Control. It should be no surprise to learn that Toronto has also been dubbed the unofficial raccoon capital of the world. And summertime is their active season. (Sources: thegridto.com, Midnight Marauders, June 12, 2013; http://www.thegridto.com/city/local-news/midnight-marauders/; cbc.ca, Raccoon Nation, April 21, 2013; http://www.cbc.ca/documentaries/natureofthings/2011/raccoonnation/)
While many residents in the Greater Toronto Area may see raccoons as pests and want to get rid of them, due to Ministry of Natural Resource guidelines and the fact they can be quite unpredictable, aggressive, and carry rabies, removal should be left to trained pest control professionals.
Raccoons may have adapted well to city life in Toronto, but that doesnt mean people can take matters into their own hands, says Horacio. In fact, doing so could lead to fines and charges: earlier this spring, a Toronto man pled guilty to a charge of cruelty to animals for hitting several raccoons with a shovel. After 19 court appearances before the Crown, he was given a conditional discharge that included 100 hours of community service at a humane society shelter. He also had to pay $1,365 to a local wildlife centre, where one of the raccoons he hit was treated for a broken leg. (Source: thestar.com, article, Man who attacked raccoons with a shovel pleads guilty, March 12, 2013; http://www.thestar.com/news/crime/2013/03/12/man_who_attacked_raccoons_with_shovel_pleads_guilty_to_animal_cruelty.html)
When it comes to animals we consider pests, its important to remember that its illegal to fire a gun in Toronto. And any form of lethal force must be humane, Horacio adds. Ministry of Natural Resources guidelines state that using body gripping traps can result in provincial charges with fines up to $5,000, and placing poison out to kill animals can result in criminal charges. (Toronto, Wildlife in the city: Raccoons, http://www.toronto.ca/animal_services/raccoon.htm, last accessed July 31, 2013.)
The experts at City & Country Pest Control recommend proactive measures, including not feeding raccoons, trimming back trees located close to houses, using metal or durable plastic trash contains, and manicuring property to eliminate debris and shelter. But while these methods can help keep raccoons at bay, they might not keep them away entirely.
When it comes to raccoons, the two most important components are removal and keeping them from returning, Horacio concludes. At City & Country Pest Control, we humanely solve raccoon and wildlife problems in the Greater Toronto Area and animal-proof your home or business.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Interior designer Nate Berkus has been adding fantasy to homes for 16 years, inspiring people with just the right creative touch. But he's been a dog-lover even longer, and he's turning his design expertise to a half-million-dollar fantasy dog park.
Berkus, 41, has joined the creative team for the 2014 Beneful Dream Dog Park Contest. Contestants have to answer one question: "If you had $500,000 to create a Dream Dog Park where you and your best buddy can play together, what would you do?"
In Lancaster, Pa., the answer included a doggy amusement park with a tennis ball tree and a 40-foot roller coaster bridge. The park there -- the third contest winner -- opens Aug. 6.
The first park was built in Johns Creek, Ga., with a family destination theme and includes a bone-shaped bridge, two splash pads, tunnels, rubberized mulch paths and shade trees. The second park in Alabaster, Ala., has synthetic turf, agility rings, a walking trail, a fetch football field, fire hydrant goalposts and a mulch adventure path with tunnels, said Brent Gleckler, brand director for Beneful dog food.
"There is nothing I love more than being with my dog," Berkus said of sidekick Tucker, a black mutt. Together, they visit a dog park nearly every night.
The parks in Alabaster and Johns Creek have been tourist magnets. In Georgia, the city had to make 72 new parking spaces next to the park to accommodate visitors.
In Alabama, people take good care of the park,
The dog park is part the city's flagship Veteran's Park, with a ball field complex, 2.5-mile walking trail, eight pavilions with picnic tables, two playgrounds, a skateboard park and veteran's memorial, Hamm said.
Every day, they get calls from tourists asking about hours and directions.
"The more people that come to our city, the more people will stop, eat and buy gas. We are all for that. Out-of-town users are great," Hamm said. "Anybody who wants to come, we more than welcome them in town."

TotalProtect Home Warranty, one of the countrys leading home protection products, has launched a new television advertising campaign. The creative, entitled Bad Stuff Happens, shows the variety of ways that vital home appliances and systems, such as refrigerators, hot water heaters, toilets and air conditioning systems can break down, and why you need a home warranty from TotalProtect. The commercial uses a smart mnemonic device to show when things break, or stuff happens, to the appliances. The campaign ends with the tagline, Youre Covered.
A home warranty can provide valuable peace of mind to families, said Sandra Finn, president of Cross Country Home Services (CCHS), the parent company of TotalProtect Home Warranty. We know that a broken air conditioner or heating system can be disastrous, so the purpose of the new ad campaign is to show homeowners that even though stuff happens, you dont need to worry about it if you have a home warranty.
TotalProtect recently conducted an extensive national survey and found 65% of consumers had to repair or replace a major appliance or home system last year. Of the 1,059 respondents who needed repairs, they spent an average of $840 and those who had to make a replacement spent an average of $1,200. More than 35% of the survey respondents had both a repair and a replacement; and air conditioners were among the top named system to be repaired or replaced. These survey results, coupled with increased home sales around the country, prompted the company to launch the ad series.
"With the Case-Shiller Home Price Indices showing unprecedented growth for the housing market, we decided it was the perfect time to let homeowners know about our warranty services," continued Finn. "When people buy a home, they want to know that their investment is safe.
The new TotalProtect campaign launched on July 22, 2013 on a variety of national cable networks targeting new and existing homeowners. It was created and produced by award-winning direct response ad agency Karlin+Pimsler. To watch the 30-second spot, visit TotalProtects YouTube page.
