Workers scaled an apartment building in Beijing on Friday to demolish a bizarre rooftop villa which captured worldwide attention but was deemed illegal by Chinese authorities.
At least six workers wearing bright orange jackets were visible on the 26-storey building's roof and were dismantling the elaborate house, which was built among rocks and trees.
Work began on Thursday after the villa's well-connected owner hired a team to start dismantling it, the Beijing Youth Daily reported, following intense media scrutiny of his business activities.
"I'm very angry that the departments responsible didn't take any action for years, but this is a good start," said a 70-year-old woman surnamed Teng, who lives in a building opposite.
"It's a good thing that demolition has finally started," she told AFP.
Authorities on Monday said the brazen structure -- which began springing up six years ago -- was illegal and threatened to demolish it after 15 days if its owner did not remove it.
The owner, Zhang Biqing, founder of a national chain of acupuncture clinics and a former member of a district-level political advisory body, had threatened neighbours who complained about the construction, reports said.
International and local media attention on the building has been intense, with Chinese web portal Sina using an aerial camera to swoop over it, revealing a multi-tiered construction heavy with vegetation and with several security cameras.
"We resolutely support major media outlets in revealing this residential compound's illegal structures," read a red banner placed on the fence of the building's compound, apparently written by residents.
But some were less supportive of the demolition.

Demolition workers scale Beijing rock villa
BEIJING: Zhang Biqing, known as 'Professor Zhang', started building his elaborate residence about six years ago on the roof of a busy residential compound at West Beijing's Haidian District.
Residents had expressed their anger at the penthouse, complaining about the illegal construction for years, with no success of stopping MrZhang's grand project that has fake hills, real greens and even a swimming pool.
That was until a few days ago, when the building was spotted by internet users and the pictures of the site were posted and widely circulated among popular Chinese social networks, that caught the attentions of local and international media.
A warrant was issued on Wednesday with a 15-day demolition order.
Haidain's local city administrative management bureau, commonly referred by Chinese as 'urban thugs', was allegedly involved in the bribery from MrZhang to turn a blind eye to the site.
One officer Chen Yu told reporters on Tuesday that they were having difficulties getting hold of Mr Zhang in order to 'investigate the case'.
The demolition started around 8am, with workers coming from outside Beijing. Residents said the dismantling of part of the site was ongoing.
Mr Zhang, who became famous after inventing a system of Chinese acupuncture treatment, told local reporters the workers were the same group who built the villa and he would not be present during the process.
One family who lives at the opposite building told Sky News that the work was hugely intrusive.
They said it was loud and very bright and it meant they could not open their curtains at night.

Demolition Under Way For Controversial Villa On Top Of Apartment Building

Philadelphia City Council will introduce legislation next month to strengthen the regulation of demolition practices, requiring contractors to develop safety plans and post them at every demolition site, along with the names of building owners, contractors, subcontractors, and city inspectors who signed off on the plans, according to the chairman of a special Council committee.
"We want the contractors to say how they're going to do the demolition, whether it's by hand or with heavy equipment, what they're going to do to protect other buildings, and it will be listed at the site so people will be able to walk up and say, 'Where's that shoring for the wall over there?' " said Councilman Curtis Jones Jr.
"We're not asking for anything that is pie-in-the-sky unreasonable," Jones said. "We want someone looking over the shoulders of contractors . . . and we want enforcement. If we put laws on the books and don't enforce them, that's wrong."
Jones spoke Thursday at the end of the fifth day of Council hearings on demolition practices, spurred by the June 5 building collapse at 22d and Market Streets that killed six people and injured 14.
He said legislation to change demolition and construction practices would be introduced when Council returns from its summer break Sept. 12.
Most of the suggestions paralleled new requirements already announced by Mayor Nutter two days after the collapse.
But Council will insist on some additional items, Jones said, such as a specific telephone number at the Department of Licenses and Inspections that citizens could call with complaints.
Routing those calls through the city's 311 system has not worked, Jones said.

This week, a local rock wall and retaining wall installation company, B&D Rockeries, released tips for choosing the right rocks for your landscape. The company has served homeowners hardscape and retaining wall needs for over 35 years. They buy from local quarries like Calportland Company or Iron Mountain Quarry. These companies have been around for years, and supply various aggregate or dimension stones.
According to the post, one of the most common rocks is granite, which has a unique consistency and look. Many homeowners prefer granite for indoor decor, like kitchen counters or bathrooms, though it can also be a beautiful addition to gardens or rock walls. Flagstone also works well for walkways and patios, coming in a variety of colors and shapes. Another rock type mentioned is river rock, a stone shaped by running water in a river. This comes with a natural look, as well as a variety of colors. B&D Rockeries recommends river rock specifically for gardens.
Homeowners looking to brighten their landscapes should talk to a rockery expert like those at B&D Rockeries. Their experience makes them the foremost authority on rocks for landscaping, and their installation expertise can help you build the perfect retaining wall, path, or waterfall.
