Boston, MA (PRWEB) February 28, 2014
Infrasense, Inc., has recently completed high-speed subsurface scanning surveys of 57 bridge decks in Southwest Michigan. The surveys included ground penetrating radar (GPR) using equipment manufactured by GSSI, infrared thermography (IR), and high resolution video data. GPR testing was carried out on each deck to quantify and map concrete deterioration. Mapping of surface features including patching and spalling, were included as a layer with the GPR concrete deterioration maps. Infrared IR scanning was also carried out on a select group of decks where this technology was considered appropriate.
The deck scanning results for the 57 bridge decks were utilized by NTH Consultants of Lansing, MI with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Bridge Deck Preservation Matrix, to develop maintenance and rehabilitation recommendations for each deck. These recommendations ranged from epoxy crack sealing for the decks in good condition, to localized deck patching for those in need of minor repair, and ultimately to hydro-demolition and overlay replacement for decks in more severe condition. Replacement was recommended where further preservation was not warranted.
Traditional bridge preservation decisions are made based on the biennial routine visual bridge inspections. However, this visual inspection data does not provide the detailed subsurface condition information essential to making cost effective maintenance, rehabilitation, and preservation decisions. In reviewing the NBI data for these 57 bridge decks, Infrasense engineers investigated the implications of making decisions solely based on NBI type rating data versus decisions made using detailed subsurface data from deck scanning.
NBI data and deck scanning were compared, showing that decks classified under a single NBI rating exhibited a wide distribution deck deterioration quantities. For example, for the 32 decks with an NBI rating of "6", the deterioration percentages ranged from 0% - 27%. To quantify the implications of these differences, the Bridge Deck Preservation Matrix was used to determine which decisions would be made using NBI data only, and how these decisions would change with the use of subsurface scanning data. This analysis revealed that different decisions would be made in 30 of the 57 cases. The implications of these differences are that some decks will be under-repaired and experience accelerated reduction of service, and some will be over-repaired incurring unnecessary expense.
The results of this analysis will be included in an upcoming technical publication and available upon request at info(at)infrasense(dot)com.

Bridge Deck Scanning Aids Preservation, Limits Risk
Eau Claire (WQOW) - We know you're sick of snow and the last thing you want to do is shovel more of it. But, the Eau Claire Fire Department is asking you to be diligent, not only for your safety, but theirs as well.
If you have any extra snow built up on decks or other emergency exits to your home, the fire department is asking you to clear a pathway. That way, you have more than one way out of your home.
Also, crews would be able to get in to fight a fire faster. Inspector Mike Laska says a fire doubles in size every five minutes, so there's no time to waste to clear snow to get to your door, or to a fire hydrant. And it's not just response to fires they're concerned about.
"The firefighters getting back they're like, yeah you should have seen what we had to do to clear the way to get a stretcher in. We had to clear that area so we could get a cot into the house and then, you know, Bob fell down on his butt because it's just so slippery. And we can't help what mother nature does but we can try and help each other, community-wise by salting and sanding," explains Laska.
The fire department says salt, sand or even kitty litter are all things you can lay down to make things less slick.

After months of battling mold and brainstorming ideas for new school locations, Cheltenham School District has found a new home for its middle school students.
Cheltenham School Districts middle school, Cedarbrook, was faced with a mold problem due to infrastructure problems, and despite remediation efforts, the mold kept creeping back in. Looking for a new middle school location, the district plans to split its students among three locations: Cheltenham High School, St. Josephs in Cheltenham and a school building at 1331 Ivy Hill Road, Wyndmoor.
Cheltenham sought a variance to allow the Ivy Hill Road building to be used as a middle school at a Springfield Township Zoning Hearing Board meeting Feb. 24. The district also sought relief for parking; the parking provision required 525 spaces, and Cheltenham sought to reduce the number to 219 spaces.
After testimony from three witnesses and comments from two residents, the zoning board decided to grant the districts request for both the use of the industrially zoned building and for the reduced number of parking spots.
As background, back in 2004-05, the property obtained zoning relief for an elementary school, day care, retail, business and sanctuary use, but the project was not fully completed, according to the districts counsel, Andrew R. Freimuth. West Oak Lane Church of God received a use of occupancy permit for a school and day care at the Ivy Hill location and used the space for some time, Freimuth said. The property was then acquired by Allegheny East Conference Corporation of Seventh-day Adventists in December, he said.
Now, the district is in the process of signing a lease with the owners to use the building until June 2016, with an option to renew for a year, Freimuth said.
Pastor Pete Palmer, of AEC, testified as a witness and said AEC is hoping to use the property in the future as a Christian, private school. Palmer said the space has been more or less vacant since 2012. He acknowledged there were some improvements needed on the property, such as issues with curbing, the apron driveway and sidewalks. Palmer said AEC intends to make these improvements when the weather allows it.
Cedarbrook Middle School Principal Iris Parker also testified as a witness and gave some background as to how the school intends to use the Ivy Hill building.
She explained Cedarbrook saw several challenges with its building, such as its roof, HVAC system and walls, which has led to water infiltration and mold.
There have been numerous remediation projects, and they last for a while, and then they fail. And then the mold comes back. Its a constant issue, and its becoming a dire situation, Parker said. Continued...

The Winfield Township supervisors on Thursday night passed a winter mailbox policy that might come into play next week, if weather forecasts are correct.
Forecasters say heavy snow might be coming early next week, which would send road crews out to plow the township's roads.
Should a mailbox be damaged during snow plowing, its placement will determine who would be responsible to fix it.
Mailboxes can't be installed in rights of way, and if they get damaged, the township won't pay. But mailboxes damaged by snow plows on private property, outside the right of way, will be the township's responsibility.
Also, mailboxes damaged by thrown snow are the responsibility of the property owner.
Officials said this had been an unwritten policy for years, but now the policy is official.
The policy will be placed on the township's new website in about three weeks. The web address is http://www.winfieldtownship.net.
The township's public works crew was busy in January, plowing at least once in 21 of the month's 31 days.
Officials added that there is an adequate road salt supply.
