Hurtado scores lone Whitecaps FC goal in 2-1 loss to Sounders FC - February 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

February 6, 2014 - Major League Soccer (MLS) Vancouver Whitecaps FC CASA GRANDE, ARIZONA - Vancouver Whitecaps FC suffered their first defeat of the preseason by a score of 2-1 to Seattle Sounders FC on Thursday morning at Grande Sports World.

Match highlights and interviews available for download at: https://mlssoccer.box.com/s/a7n2xe5sg6cy6336eh5x

After surrendering two goals in the opening 20 minutes, a second-half surge brought the 'Caps to within one goal of their Cascadia rival but Vancouver's comeback effort would ultimately fall just short.

"There were a lot of positives, but there were also some negatives in regards to what I want and what I demand," said Whitecaps FC head coach Carl Robinson. "I think we had some very good attacking combinations in both halves ... obviously, the defending in the first half for me was nowhere near where it should be. We're looking at certain things and details in collective scenarios. We'll review the video and we'll sit down with the players and move forward."

Second-year winger/striker Erik Hurtado, who came on at halftime, scored Whitecaps FC's lone goal with a stunning half-volley off the run. Less than a minute into the second half, midfielder Matt Watson played a perfect ball over the top to a streaking Hurtado, who hit it first time with the outside of his foot into the top left corner of the goal.

"I think Erik Hurtado's performance in the second half is as good as I've seen since he's been with the club," said Robinson. "He's playing with a spring in his step at the moment. He's got a confidence about him and a desire both on the ball and off the ball as well."

Hurtado, who was playing as the lone central forward, was lively throughout the second half. His best opportunity to equalize came just before the 80-minute mark, when he broke in all alone only to be disrupted by a sliding Marcus Hahnemann.

The 23-year-old also had a few combination plays with Omar Salgado, who played about 30 minutes for the second straight day, but the duo simply couldn't find the back of the net.

Unlike Wednesday's match, in which Robinson fielded a lineup composed mainly of trialists, Residency players, and recent draft picks, the 'Caps went with a more experienced squad against the Sounders on Thursday.

Vancouver's starting lineup included the likes of goalkeeper David Ousted, defender Jay DeMerit and midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker . DeMerit looked particularly sharp in his 45 minutes of action, making no fewer than three sliding clearances in the first half to keep the game within reach.

HVAC Firm at Center of Target Data Breach Also Counts Wal-Mart, Costco as Customers - February 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Access was reportedly given to help power savings, but network wasn't properly isolated from consumer data

It's said that for every $100 USD spent at retailers via credit card, 5 cents is lost via digital fraud. The holiday hack of Target Corp. (TGT) reminded Americans that this problem was far from solved. And with new details leaking out from the U.S. Secret Service investigation there's cause for concern that the Target data loss could be just the tip of the iceberg in the attack.

    I. Wal-Mart, et al. Revealed to be At Risk

The latest twist in the saga surrounding the massive credit card data loss should make other retail/grocery chains, including Whole Foods Market, Inc. (WFM), Trader Joe's Comp., and the nation's #3 warehouse retail chain, BJ's Wholesale Club, more than a bit nervous.

According to sources of Washington Post security researcher Brian Krebs -- the first member of the media to catch wind of the breach -- the hackers had a little help from an insecure third-party. They reportedly struck via first compromising servers at an air conditioning business in Sharpsburg, Penn, whom Target used as a contractor. The firm -- Fazio Mechanical Service -- has a flashy portfolio of high-profile clients which includes not only Target and all of the aforementioned retailers/grocers, but a number of other large firms that Mr. Krebs and other early reports have not mentioned.

This latest news emerged after Reuters and The Wall Street Journal quoted Target executives last week as saying that the breach occurred via a compromised third-party contractor. Digging around on Fazio's clients page, which remains active following Mr. Krebs' post, I found that the list of high-profile clients doesn't stop with the three other companies Mr. Krebs mentioned.

It is unclear why Mr. Krebs didn't notice these other even bigger clients, but clearly that discovery illustrates his comments are even more important than they sounded based on his shorter list.

These clients helped Fazio to earn the distinction of being the largest heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) commercial sales and repair company in the western Pennsylvania area. Fazio had service centers in Pennsylvania, as well as outposts in nearby states, including Maryland, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia.

It appears increasingly likely that Mr. Krebs' sources are correct -- there was a breach at Fazio that led to a breach at its client (Target). Fazio President Ross Fazio confirmed that he received a recent visit from the Secret Service in connection to the ongoing Target investigation.

II. Timeline of the Attack Emerges

Solution to overcrowded school: buy an office building - February 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    FALLS CHURCH, Va. -

What do you do if you have a very overcrowded elementary school in a built-up suburb? Well, in the case of Bailey's Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences in Fairfax County, Va., officials have bought a $10 million office building. They plan on turning it into a school by this fall.

Bailey's Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences is an unusual public school. The Arts and Sciences magnet program offers classes like drama and "creative movement."

Bailey's is also one of the county's language immersion schools. Students in that program learn all their math, science and health in Spanish. Language and social studies classes are taught in English. Both programs are quite popular.

And on top of those magnet programs, the neighborhood near the school is exploding with immigrant families, few of whom can afford private school.

Bailey's has about 1,360 students -- that's 130 percent of its physical capacity. The library was cut in half to generate more classroom space.

We asked principal Marie Lemmon, "Why don't you just bring in portable classrooms?

"We have done that," Lemmon replied. "We have over 19 portable classrooms, plus a ten-room modular [wing]."

That's a total of 29 classrooms that are outside of the main building at Bailey's. It's a logistical nightmare for teachers.

"We don't have running water," sighed fourth grade teacher Elise LaPointe. "So we have to come inside whenever we have to do science, or drink water, or go to the bathroom -- anything."
