    Updated today at 5:00 PM

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- It's a mansion we've seen before, but nowadays it looks a lot different. Its the mansion former NBA player Dell Curry built for his family in 1996.

Years later, Gerald Wallace bought it and NBC Charlotte got an exclusive look inside after he put it on the market. Then, we got another look inside when a Charlotte businessman bought it.

Fast forward to today and it looks very different.

The basketball court remainsfor now. But everything else has pretty much changed, starting with the grand entrance.

"We created this large foyer that we have now, which is 15-feet by 25-feet, and that became the two-story foyer that we've got with that groin vault ceiling," said James Benham, president of Benham Builders.

He added, "Those are 11-foot doors, and they probably weigh about 400 pounds apiece."

Fire chief issues permit reminder - March 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

JOHNSTOWN - With warmer weather on the horizon, the city fire chief reminded the public about what is needed when making home repairs.

Chief Bruce Heberer recently told the Common Council he wanted to remind city residents about property work that requires permits, but mostly will not result in a rise in residents' assessments.

Heberer said his code enforcement division and the city Assessor's Office is letting the public know that city permits may be needed for the following work and projects: repairs to foundations, garages, barns, sheds, basements or entryways, carports, patios, breezeways, siding, sheds under 144 square feet, painting, trees and shrubs, window and door replacement, sidewalks, paving driveways, roofs, chimneys, porches and step repair, repairs to outside, interior renovations, insulation, remodeling, boilers or furnaces, hot water heaters, plumbing and electrical.

"None of that work will result in the increase in your assessment," Heberer stated.

Only an increase in square footage could result in assessment increases, he said.

Heberer urged those with further questions to contact the code enforcement office at the city fire station, or the assessor's office at City Hall.

In regular business, the council reappointed Christine Krempa of 804 S. William St. and Helen James of 404 S. Market St. to three-year terms on the city Zoning Board of Appeals. Their appointments will expire on March 31, 2017.

The council also reappointed Peter K. Smith of 206 W. Third Ave. and George Nicholas of 314 N. Perry St. to three-year terms on the city Planning Board. These terms will expire on March 31, 2017.

Mayor Michael Julius also announced upcoming events that included: Citywide Garage Sale, May 2 through 4; City Cleanup, May 8 through 10; and the farmers market starting May 20. The market will go from 3 to 6 p.m. every Tuesday downtown.

Palm Coast still feels jolt of tornado - March 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Then there are those homes that havent been fixed at all since the storm blitzed through the neighborhood 100 days ago.

The debris clean-up was fast, there were no casualties and most of the damage was moderate to minor, but a lot of scars remain. Making home repairs after a tornado is a lengthy process.

The so-called Starlight Tornado touched down in Palm Coast the night of Dec. 14 and damaged homes across three major subdivisions. In all, 241 homes sustained damage, including seven that were destroyed, according to statistics from the city and Flagler County.

Total cost of the damage was estimated at $7.2 million.

Additionally, the city has issued a total of 205 permits for damage repair, said Palm Coast spokeswoman Cindi Lane.

Suzanne Bispos home along Barring Place was significantly damaged, but she and her husband didnt waste any time on their to-do list.

When they walk into their backyard, they dont see the same urgency from their neighbors. Then again, one of the nearby homes is in foreclosure and another is a rental property that was vacant the night of the storm. Someone was scheduled to move in a week later, Bispo said.

The structural damage to the rental house means it is no longer a desirable place to live at least not until some repair work is done.

Bispo said she has called the citys code enforcement office. Shes also called the property owner in California and the property manager in Florida. Shes still waiting for someone to show up with a tool belt.

Olentangy ready to raise roof at high school - March 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By THOMAS GALLICK ThisWeek Community News ThisWeek Community News Monday March 24, 2014 7:59 PM

Students returning to Olentangy High School this fall will learn under a new roof.

The Olentangy school board voted 4-0 last Thursday, March 13, to approve a $1 million project to replace most of the roof at the high school.

Devon Immelt, the district's public information coordinator, said no one incident led to the board's decision to replace the roof, but the structure already is past the replacement date set when it was originally installed.

"It's past its replacement time and the district has worked hard to keep that roof maintained past its (usable life)," he said.

He said the replacement project was not related to damage caused by a 2010 windstorm that tore off part of the roof. The storm also caused significant damage to the high school's gym floor.

"That damage was previously repaired and paid for through insurance," Immelt said.

The district has contracted with Design Build Solutions of Cleveland, which submitted a $1,014,600 bid for the project. The roof will be installed by subcontractor Sky Roofing.

The district expects construction staging for the project to begin in the last week of May. Construction is slated to begin May 27 and end Aug. 8, five days before the 2014-15 school year begins.

The contractor will remove the existing EPDM rubber roof and replace it with a modified bitumen roof, known for being durable and weather resistant.

Camfil-Electrolux Agreement Proves the Importance of Air Filter Life Cycle Costs - March 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

RIVERDALE, N.J., March 21, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- A three-year agreement between the appliance manufacturerElectroluxand Camfil -- the world's leading provider of clean air solutions -- highlights the increasing importance of total cost of ownership (TCO). As more companies take a holistic, long-term view of costs, they're discovering that a product's price tag tells only a small part of the story. Indeed, often it is the product with the higher upfront cost that leads to greater overall savings -- making it the wiser investment. This is particularly the case, as Electrolux discovered, when it comes to commercial air filters.

While traditional air filters tend to carry lower initial costs than more sophisticated models -- like thehigh-efficiency air filters from Camfil-- they also degrade more rapidly, requiring more frequent change outs, as well as more energy to push the air flow through the filter. The result: a surprisingly high total cost of ownership, once replacements, installation, energy use, and disposal costs are factored in.

Yet high-efficiency filters change the equation. Thanks to their innovative design, and their focus on sustainability, Camfil filters use less energy, last longer, and require less frequent replacement and disposal. So a higher upfront price actually leads to cost savings in the long run. By demonstrating this -- showing not just the best-of-breed performance of its air filters, but their total cost of ownership advantage -- Camfil was able to secure the Electrolux agreement, which covers three Electrolux appliance plants in the United States. While unit costs will roughly double, total costs will be reduced in excess of 30 percent.

As organizations ranging from hospitals to manufacturing plants to educational institutions strive to contain costs without sacrificing performance, life cycle cost analysis is enabling them to focus on preferred products. What these organizations are finding is that with the right vendor, total cost of ownership can be lowered even as performance is improved. Camfil's energy efficient, sustainable air filters, for example, have already helped customers reduce their HVAC energy costs by 20 percent, their installation costs by 50 percent, and their disposal costs by 70 percent -- all while maintaining optimal indoor air quality.

To help potential customers understand what savings are possible for their own particular circumstances, Camfil offers its uniqueLife Cycle Cost software. It enables users to enter their current filter brand, type, operating parameters, and cost to compare the lifetime costs of their existing filters with Camfil air filters.

As companies like Electrolux are discovering, a low initial price may be an enticing proposition, but low long-term costs are a winning one.

The world leader in air filtration systems, Camfil provides clean air solutions for hospitals, hotels, office buildings, educational institutions, and pharmaceutical and biotech companies. We provide the tools to achieve sustainability, maintain high air quality, and reduce airborne infections -- all while lowering total cost of ownership. Camfil customers go green without ever sacrificing performance. For more information, visit us online at http://airfilters.camfilfarr.us, or call us toll-free at 888.599.6620.

SnapRay Guidelight turns standard power outlets into safety night lights - March 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Placing guidelights up your hallway or down your staircase can involve bulky plugin solutions or a professional and expensive installation. SnapRays Guidelight, an easy-install outlet cover with built-in LEDs, could simplify this process by turning any standard power outlet into a night light without the need for re-wiring or batteries.

At a glance, the SnapRays Guidelight looks no different to a standard power outlet cover, but features patented "power extractors" on the backside. In removing the standard outlet cover and replacing it with SnapRays, these power extractors slot into the outlet and extract enough juice to power the LEDs without rewiring or using batteries. The company says this process takes only seconds and that the LED lights will last for up to 25 years.

Once installed, a built-in light sensor will turn the Guidelight on in the dark and off when it is light, automating things and avoiding unnecessary use of electricity. According to the company, the units draw 5 mA of power and costs less than five cents (US) a year to run.

Aside from energy savings and ease of installation, the unobtrusive nature of SnapRays adds further weight to its creator's claim as a convenient replacement for typical plug-in guide lights. While SnapRays look like a regular outlet cover, its ability to extract power from the wall while leaving the outlets free for other appliances means that it functions as one too.

The SnapRays Guidelight measures 2.9 x 4.9 in (7.3 x 12.5 cm) and less than a quarter-inch (6 mm) in thickness. It is compatible with standard outlets that have exposed screw terminals and operates at 100-120 volts (those used in the US, Canada, Mexico and certain Latin American countries). The team says it is looking at the potential for units compatible with European outlets but warns these are likely to be some ways off.

Two styles are available the Duplex, which has two separate holes to fit over standard duplex outlets, and the Decor with one rectangular hole for use with standard decor outlets. The lights are available in white, light almond or ivory.

The team has taken to Kickstarter to raise funds for mass production and after setting a humble target of US$12,000, has just surpassed $360,000. It is offering single Guidelights at a pledge level or $12, while a pledge of $36 will put you in line for a pack of three. Shipping is estimated for May 2014.

You can hear from one of the company's founders, Sean Watkins, in the video below.
