    Rayners Lane beds in sheds build torn down - March 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Harrow Borough Council officers demolish Rayners Lane beds in sheds

    2:28pm Friday 21st March 2014 in News By Bruce Thain

    A 'beds in sheds' structure in the back garden of a family home was torn down following a council investigation.

    The single-storey outhouse in Rayners Lane was demolished this week following an investigation by Harrow Borough Council planning officers.

    The owners were given an enforcement notice for the structure, which was built without planning permission.

    Cabinet member for planning and development Cllr Stephen Greek said: This was a flagrant abuse of planning rules, with people living in cramped and unsuitable conditions.

    Cases like this underline why the work of our planning enforcement team is so vital, and why it is so important that we have given them extra support to crack down on this type of abuse.

    Rogue landlords should have nowhere to hide in a cleaner, safer and fairer Harrow."

    Earlier this year the council commissioned a remote controlled plane to take thermal images of the entire borough.

    Before the operation, planning officers estimated there were 75 cases of unauthorised 'beds in sheds' in Harrow.

    The Mentalist sheds two original cast members - March 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    YouTube Videos Tweets Comments

    I cant say that I am surprised that The Mentalist has shed two of its original cast members. Amanda Righetti and Owain Yeoman have had their final episode with the series reports E Online. The two played Grace Van Pelt and Wayne Rigsby.

    I always thoughts that Van Pelt was there for noting more than eye candy, she rarely had the good story lines and over the last couple of season was relegated to nothing more than holding down the office. I never liked the character played by Yeoman.

    I am glad to see that Cho and the others continue on. I liked the original Mentalist premise, but I am glad to see them move on from Red John finally. The show is in danger of being cancelled if rumors are to be believed. I hope that doesn't happen, The Mentalist is a good show and is still fun to watch.

    The final episode with the two actors is called "White as the Driven Snow" and starts with Van Pelt kidnapped. Both characters made it out alive, which is to be expected. The show isnt really known for killing off main characters, Game of Thrones it is not. Rigsby was offered a job with the FBI, but turned it down and he and his wife head off into the sunset with the new baby to care for. I wonder if we will see any main characters go. It's nice to see the story line for Rigsby and Van Pelt wrapped up nicely rather than just left hanging.

    Zoners wary of shedding shed permits - March 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    A plan to allow small sheds to be built without a permit sparked a lengthy debate among planning and zoning commissioners.

    The proposal to amend the town zoning regulations stems from changes made to state building codes, which became effective on Feb. 28 and exempts several small structures, including sheds under 200 square feet and free-standing decks, from needing a building permits for one and two structures on a single property.

    In order to establish consistency with these recent code changes, this amendment expands the list in the zoning regulations for minor accessory structures that are also to be exempted from the need of a zoning permit, reads the proposed amendment.

    Minor accessory structures previously included walls and fences, as well as dog houses and bird baths.

    Richard Baldelli, the towns zoning enforcement officer, voiced concern in a March 5 letter to Town Planner Betty Brosius highlighting that several of the exempt items do require a zoning permit in Ridgefield making the towns regulations out of step with the states.

    He suggested that the town exempt some structures from requiring a permit, including:

    One-story detached accessory structures used as tool and storage sheds, playhouse and similar uses, provided the floor area does not exceed 200 square feet;

    Prefabricated swimming pools that are equal to or less than 24 inches deep;

    Swings, non-habitable tree houses and other playground equipment;

    Decks not exceeding 200 square feet that are more than 30 inches high and are not attached to a dwelling.

    Popular park may get fixup - March 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    FAIRMONT - An attempt last year to obtain a state grant to improve Cedar-Hanson Park northwest of Trimont was unsuccessful. Now the county is looking at scaled-down plans that might finally get the park the upgrade it needs for its heavy use.

    Martin County Engineer Kevin Peyman said Tuesday that building a restroom and showers, including septic and sewer, along with providing the other side of the park with water and electricity, would cost $300,000. This is down from the $500,000 price tag used when applying for a Parks Legacy Grant from the Clean Water Land and Legacy Amendment last fall.

    "We currently have $60,000 in our park fund," Peyman said. "Out comes the pay for the caretakers and the day-to-day expenses, and usually some project comes up, so we use about $30,000 to $35,000 a year."

    Peyman estimates that if the county goes forward with the new proposal, it could take the parks department five to seven years to pay it back.

    "We have no more projects planned for any of the parks for seven or eight years after that," Peyman said. "This would essentially finish Cedar-Hanson Park, and then after that we could concentrate on the others."

    Cedar-Hanson Park is the largest and most-used county park. It is a favorite spot for campers, with electrical sites for RVs, and another side with more traditional camping. Cedar-Hanson also brings in the most revenue, with $20 per night camping fees for electric sites and $10 per night for non-electrical sites.

    While no action was taken Tuesday, Martin County commissioners told Peyman to keep exploring and getting details on the proposed project.

    In other business, commissioners offered the Martin County emergency manager position to Erin Busta, after LuAnn Akres declined to accept it.

    "She was one of our top choices," Commissioner Elliot Belgard said of Busta. "She has a bachelor's degree in emergency management, and is very high energy."

    The board approved the hiring of Busta, contingent on a background check. She is scheduled to begin work April 6.

    Meritage Resort spends $8M on room upgrades - March 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Thursday, March 20, 2014, 6:11 pm

    By Dan Verel, Business Journal Staff Reporter

    NAPA The Meritage Resort & Spa on Thursday said it just completed about $8 million in renovations to the 157 original rooms in the hotel.

    Combined with a $40 million expansion that was completed in May 2012, the resort now has 322 up-to-date rooms, in addition to the two largest ballrooms in Napa County.

    First built in 2007, the 157 rooms in its main building were updated with new, modern design, including new carpeting, bedding, desks, chairs and tables at a cost of nearly $51,000 a room. In addition to revitalizing the rooms and suites, three were converted into Bella Suites with a studio setup designed for brides and bridal parties.

    The recent renovations and upgrades were completed in early March. The hotel now has dining options, including Siena Restaurant, The Commons: A Wine Bar plus an adults-only pool with private cabanas, hillside vineyards and Estate Cave with a spa, tasting room and event space.

    The upgrades come just 18 months after the resort opened the expansion, which included 165 new rooms, Crush Ultra Lounge, Blend Caf and additional meeting and event space. All told, an additional 131,300 square feet was added. Meeting space was increased by 12,500 square feet, totaling about 22,000 square feet indoors and another 28,000 square feet outdoors.

    The Meritage teamed with two local charities to donate items from its hotel rooms that would otherwise end up in landfills and recycling facilities.

    We were looking for ways to help the community and reduce the amount of building supplies going to local landfills, said Michael Palmer, general manager of The Meritage, which his owned by Irvine-based Pacific Hospitality Group. Working with the Solano-Napa Habitat for Humanity chapter and St. Johns to donate items from the 157 rooms we are renovating was a perfect solution for us, the community and the environment.
