Stunning New University Hospital 'Sky Tower' Opens - March 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Posted Sunday, March 30th 2014 @ 8am byJim Forsyth

The largest construction project in Bexar County history has come to an end, as University Health System unveiled the new 'Sky Tower,' the 420 room addition to University Hospital in the Medical Center, 1200 WOAI news reports.

"This is designed to accommodate today's technology, as well as technologies which will be developed in the future," said Leni Kirkman, University's Communications Manager.

The massive addition includes 35 operating rooms, a massive state of the art emergency department, and one percent of the total budget goes toward 1200 works of art which are part of the 'healing arts program' embraced by the Health System.

And Kirkman says University is shedding its image as the 'public hospital.' She says only 23% of University's operating budget comes from taxpayers, the rest comes from insured, paying customers.

"This facility really is the final piece to that puzzle when it comes to having the level of care that we all want if it's a serious illness or injury," she said.

Stillwater staff say planned Water Street Inn addition too close to street - March 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Plans for a major expansion of the Water Street Inn will go before the Stillwater City Council Tuesday.

The Stillwater Planning Commission signed off on the plans March 10, but city staff have raised concerns about the location of the three-story addition.

"It's too close to Myrtle Street, we think," said Bill Turnblad, the city's community development director. "We want them to move it back 8 feet farther than their plans specified."

The project requires a variance to the front-yard setback and a special-use permit for the rooftop patio, Turnblad said.

Owner Chuck Dougherty said Thursday that he has no plans to move the structure back.

"The planning commission approved our plans," he said. "At this time, we are not making any adjustments to them."

The addition would include a rooftop patio and a new primary entrance and lobby. It also would have a tower element, a nod to the clock tower that graced the Union Depot train station that formerly stood on the site.

The 21,000-square-foot addition, designed by ARCHNET in Stillwater, would add about 20 rooms to the 41-room hotel. The hotel lobby in the southwest corner would be moved to the building's north side, and the existing lobby would become the main dining area.

Downtown readies for Gordon Drive reconstruction - March 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SIOUX CITY | John Mechem heard a few customers grumbling already on Monday.

The Chili's Grill & Bar general manager expects to hear a lot more as construction starts up on Gordon Drive just outside the restaurant and makes it harder for customers to reach businesses along one of downtown Sioux City's busiest streets.

"We understand that (business) will be slower than usual this summer," Mechem said.

Monday's closure of the street's inside lanes was just the beginning of the Iowa Department of Transportation's reconstruction of Gordon Drive from west of Pearl Street east to the viaduct at Court Street. The project is expected to be finished in late November.

As early as this week, traffic will be limited to two lanes of westbound traffic on Gordon Drive for the duration of construction. Eastbound traffic will be detoured onto Third Street. Eastbound motorists will able to get back onto Gordon Drive at Court Street to drive over the viaduct.

"I'm hoping with our setup that traffic operates fairly smoothly," IDOT District 3 traffic planner Dakin Schultz said.

So do many others who regularly use Gordon Drive.

"The biggest thing that we are trying to make known is how people can get to us," said Mechem, who's working with the IDOT to set up temporary signage giving motorists directions through the construction zone to the restaurant at 110 Nebraska St.

The Gordon Drive work is part of the IDOT's 10-year, $400 million project to widen Interstate 29 to three lanes in each direction from Sergeant Bluff to the South Dakota border. The total project is currently scheduled to be finished in 2018.

Gordon Drive is being widened and repaved, and its intersection with Virginia Street expanded to accommodate traffic pattern shifts that will result from the I-29 widening and reconstruction through downtown that will take place in coming years.

Pesticides Procurement Category Market Research Report Now Available from IBISWorld - March 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) March 30, 2014

Pesticides have a buyer power score of 3.5 out of 5. This score reflects better negotiating conditions for buyers. This market has undergone a significant amount of change over the past three years as pesticide development has clashed with buyer sentiment concerning the potentially harmful effects of chemicals and toxins applied to buildings, homes and produce. According to IBISWorld procurement analyst Andrew Rebhan, prices in the three years to 2013 grew slightly, but were stunted with the growing popularity of genetically modified seeds and more eco-friendly pest control methods. Suppliers will start to focus more on non-farming business segments that have not had large shifts in their use of conventional pesticides, while also taking advantage of the growing biofuels market. Buyers in this market face some risk from the high volatility of raw material inputs and the effects of annual rainfall.

The buyer power score is weakened by the high level of market share concentration for pesticide producers. Suppliers in this market are large companies that have a strong control of the current output, reducing the amount of choice for buyers. Following a cost-plus pricing model, these suppliers try to establish mark-up prices to maintain steady profit margins, although this is becoming harder over time, and buyers will benefit from dropping profit levels over the next three years. Due to the unstable nature of raw materials that go into chemical manufacturing, buyers face a moderate level of risk along the supply chain, says Rebhan.

The pesticide market will begin to favor buyers more over the next three years. The shift towards using organic products and genetically modified crops on farmlands, combined with integrated pest control methods will reduce demand for pesticides, and thus prices. The level of pesticide substitutes is moderate but, because the market continues to be highly regulated, suppliers will be pressured to offer other alternatives to conventional chemical pest control. The top four vendors in the market are Arysta Lifescience Corporation, BASF Aktiengesellschaft, Bayer AG, and E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company.
