Springfield Township School District OKs contract for high school gym renovations - March 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By Mark D. Marotta 21st Century Media News Service

The board approved the vendor in a vote March 18 at the districts school board meeting.

The meeting agenda indicated the project would include installation, sanding and finishing a new wood gym floor; modifications to bleachers, partition door and wall mats; new volleyball standards and basketball backboards; and wrestling mat mover.

According to a list of long-term capital projects for 2013-14 in the minutes from the boards property committee meeting in November, because the current gym floor was rubber, kids slip and water under [the] floor causes [the] floor to buckle, which is a safety hazard.

Before the board vote, Vice President Gretchen Slapinsky said the property committee had met earlier in the day and saw preliminary design sketches for the gymnasium renovation project, and the administration would finalize them.

This proposal is in line with the numbers we were talking about, Slapinsky said.

Board member Holly Kisailus asked for explanations of various aspects of the renovation project. Slapinsky replied that the bleachers had to be moved for the floor to be worked on.

As for the wall mats, Craig Thorne, the districts director of operations, explained that they needed to be remounted because the floor was being raised by 2 1/2 inches. He also said the existing volleyball standards were portable and had caused damage in the past, and the basketball backboards are outdated and needed to be replaced.

During her property committee report, Slapinsky reported that there had been discussion about the bus garage, where an investigation into contamination was ongoing. She added that the district hoped the related costs would be covered by insurance.

Also, Slapinsky said that the district had been in touch with the township about a possible stormwater management project on the site and what the potential implications might be for investigating the contamination. Continued...

Larkspur restaurant fire attributed to oven - March 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A two-alarm fire at an historic Larkspur restaurant over the weekend has been attributed to an oven flue exhaust pipe near the buildings roof, officials said.

While returning from a medical call at approximately 2:50 a.m. March 15, crewmembers with the Larkspur Fire Department noticed smoke and discovered a fire roaring at the Tavern at Lark Creek, Chief Bob Sinnott said.

The crew reportedly observed smoke coming from the second floor of the Victorian building at 234 Magnolia Ave., according to Sinnott. The fire was quickly upgraded to a second alarm, and firefighters and crews from the Larkspur, Corte Madera, San Rafael, Kentfield, Mill Valley and Ross Valley departments were called to assist.

Firefighters were able to control the fire in about 90 minutes after the blaze burned portions of the buildings roof, eaves and attic areas, Sinnott said. The restaurants dining and kitchen areas also sustained significant smoke, heat and water damage.

Sinnott said the fire is believed to have originated near the oven flue as a result of heat build up. Damage estimates were not available, but the chief said the building is structurally stable and should be ready for repairs and remodeling soon.

No injuries were reported during the fire.

Sinnott credited the firefighters who spotted the blaze for their quick action in locating and attacking the blaze.

Because few people are awake at this hour, this most likely prevented a delay in receiving a report of the fire and subsequently further damage to the building, he said.

The Tavern at Lark Creek was built in the late 19th Century and served as a home for decades before it was converted into a restaurant in the 1970s.

Show opens with flowers, fountains - March 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

If you're in the market for a hand pruner or a lopper to get your shrubs nipped into shape, you may want to stop by the booth occupied by Wayne Ball of North Carolina at the QCCA Flower & Garden Show, taking place today through Sunday at the QCCA Expo Center in Rock Island.

Just give yourself plenty of time.

Ball has quite apitch for his Florian-brand tools, extolling both their efficiency and the fact that they are made in the United States, specifically Connecticut.

To demonstrate their efficiency, he has on hand asupply of various-sized tree branches that he invites people to cut with his tools. I trieda branch about 1 inches in diameter with the ratcheted lopper and was amazed to slice right through.

Ball also promotes themade-in-the-States angle with signs that read, "Stop economic suicide, buy American!"

Nextto Ball's booth is a display ofbirdhouses made from gourds by Sid Meyers of Indiana. TheQuad-Cities has an active gourd group, and I've seen lots ofgreat work, but the glossy, ceramic-like finish on his birdhouses was new to me.

The secret is three coats of exterior spar urethane, the kind used on boats, which is applied as a spray, he said. "People are always walking up to them, tapping them" to figure out what they're made of, he said.

"They are built to be truly functional," he added. "There's a clean-out hole on the bottom and vent holes at the top." Among the types of birds attracted to the houses are the tufted titmouse, chickadee and nuthatch, he said. The cost ranges from $23 to $32.

In the area of "hot" plants, you'll find a multicolored selection of succulents and heucheras from Distinctive Gardens in Dixon, Ill.;tiny plants for fairy gardens from the Miniature Garden Shoppe in Kewanee, Ill., and small hanging terrariums from Janet White of Emden, Mo.

In the landscape vein, retaining walls made of tumbled concrete, fire pits, fountains, patiosand outdoor kitchens are well-represented, although not quite as heavily as in some recent years.

Redevelopment of Blackrocks Frascati shopping centre sought - March 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The new scheme would involve increasing the retail and restaurant space by 6,662sq m to 16,020sq m

Plans for the redevelopment of Frascati Centre in Blackrock, Co Dublin, one of the most controversial shopping centre schemes of the early 1980s, have been lodged with Dn Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council.

The proposal is for the part demolition of the existing shopping complex and its extension towards the Blackrock bypass and Mount Merrion Avenue, increasing the retail space by more than 50 per cent and adding an extra storey to the height of the building.

The application is being made by Frascati Investments 2012 Limited, a company owned by the Roche family, whose eponymous department store was once the anchor tenant of the shopping centre. The family sold Roches Stores to Debenhams in 2006, but retained the freehold of the Frascati Centre.

The shopping centre was built in the early 1980s on the site of a Georgian mansion, Frascati House, one of the three principal residences of the FitzGeralds, Dukes of Leinster, along with Leinster House in Dublin and Carton House in Co Kildare.

An application for a major redevelopment of the centre was rejected by the council in 2006. Unlike the new proposal that application had a significant residential element with 65 apartments. A three- storey car park was also sought. The scheme was rejected by the council on the grounds that it would endanger public safety by causing a traffic hazard.

The new scheme would involve increasing the retail and restaurant space by 6,662sq m to 16,020sq m. There would also be 556 underground parking spaces. The developers also propose undertaking road improvements as part of the development.

The Frascati Park Residents Association, which represents homeowners beside the centre, said it would hold a meeting shortly to discuss the proposals. A spokesman said it would demand a cast-iron guarantee in the planning permission that there would be no construction work at night.

Kerala: Cabinet reshuffle post-polls on the cards? - March 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Trivandrum, March 21: A cabinet reshuffle is likely after the Lok Sabha polls scheduled on April 10 in Kerala, announced chief minister Oommen Chandy.

Chandy, on Thurday, said that a cabinet reshuffle would take place post-polls after getting the approval of the party high command.

The recent entrant to United Democratic Front, Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP, might demand seats, which may create new trouble for the Congress-led Front. The RSP has two MLAs in state assembly.

It is speculated that the Kerala Congress (B) chairman R. Balakrishna Pillai might demand a cabinet berth for his son and former minister for sports and film KB Ganesh Kumar.

"Chandy said that he would consider our demand for cabinet berth after the polls. We are waiting," said Pillai.

Ganesh Kumar had to step down from cabinet after his wife Yamini Thankachy complained to Oommen Chandy that she was physically tortured by the minister. Ganesh was also alleged to be having an illicit relationship with solar scam accused Saritha S Nair.

The reshuffle might have repercussions within the Front as inducting new ministers into the cabinet will require the removal of a few ministers.

India Today learnt that the portfolios of some allegedly "incompetent" ministers of Muslim League, an ally of the ruling front, would also be changed after the polls.

There is a growing demand within the Muslim League that minister for education P.K. Abdu Rabb should be replaced by M.P. Abdussamad Samadani, Kottakkal MLA. But the League leadership may not accept that proposal as they prefer N. Shamsudheen, MLA from Mannarkad, to Samadani if they go for a replacement.

Rifi calls on Cabinet to fill vacant commission posts - March 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

BEIRUT: Justice Minister Ashraf Rifi urged the Cabinet Friday to fill vacant posts in a 2005 commission tasked with following up on the case of hundreds of Lebanese believed detained in Syrian jails, the state-run National News Agency reported.

In a letter sent to the prime ministers office, Rifi demanded the appointment of a new head of the commission replacing Judge Joseph Maamari, who retired.

He also asked the Interior Ministry to appoint a replacement for commission member Sami Nabhan, who also retired.

Rifi also referred documents published by Lebanese and Arab newspapers on the issue of Lebanese detainees in Syria to the commission to investigate them further, the NNA said.

Around 600 Lebanese are being held in Syrian prisons and eyewitness accounts and documents have indicated that many are still alive and in Syria, say the families of the detained Lebanese.
