Irving, Texas (PRWEB) March 19, 2014
A special report from the U.S. Department of Justice estimated that 3.7 million household burglaries occurred each year between 2003 and 2007. But even more troubling was the finding that a household member was present during approximately one million burglaries, with an average of 266,650 becoming victims of violent burglaries in their homes. With violent intrusions accounting for more than seven percent of all home burglaries, its a legitimate fear for homeowners.
To help homeowners stay safe during a burglary, the Electronic Security Association (ESA) offers these tips.
What to do if you suspect an intrusion
Should you suspect someone has entered your home, its important to act quickly. First and foremost, do not attempt to apprehend the burglar yourself. If youre near your home security system, press the emergency alarm to notify your alarm monitoring company that you require immediate assistance. If you are not close to the alarm panel or your home isnt equipped with a monitored system, everyone in the home should immediately, and quietly, move to a pre-arranged safe place.
A neighbors home is an ideal safe place - but only if you are able to exit inconspicuously. If youre on an upper level or cannot leave without encountering the burglar, grab your cell phone and quietly get your family into a hiding spot such as a closet or crawl space. Once your family is in place, call 911 and keep the operator on the line. Stay quiet in the safe space until police arrive or until you are certain the assailant has left your home.
What to do if you encounter a burglar
Should you be discovered by the burglar before getting to a safe place, dont panic or make any sudden movements. Avoid looking the intruder in the eyes as he or she may interpret it as an act of aggression. Keep your hands at shoulder-level and visible to the criminal. Comply with demands and allow the burglar to leave with your possessions nothing is worth losing your life.
In a life-threatening situation, try to escape before resorting to violence because the burglar usually has the upper hand in these situations. Additionally, attract attention by screaming or making loud noises but no matter what, never agree to go to another location with the burglar. It is likely the assailant will take you to an isolated location where you will be unable to escape or call for help.
If youre face-to-face with the burglar, take mental notes of his or her physical appearance (height, build, hair, eye color, ethnicity, distinct markings) and mannerisms (accent, walking style) so that you can give a description to police.

A COMBINATION of diligent police work and good home security helped nail two teenagers who broke into three Wilsonton homes on Monday.
Teenage father Laine Wallis, 17, was found by police at 8.30pm Monday just hours after breaking into three homes and stealing a number of items.
Home security and street CCTV camera footage helped identify the culprits.
Wallis was found with an iPhone and charger, headphones and 5c pieces stolen during the break-ins.
A 14-year-old associate was found with a stolen iPhone.
Having spent the night in custody, Wallis appeared before Toowoomba Magistrates Court yesterday to plead guilty to the break-ins.
His solicitor David Burns said his client, who had a two-year-old daughter, had drug issues.
Magistrate Damian Carroll placed Wallis on 18 months probation to include random testing for drugs. The juvenile boy was remanded in custody for sentencing in two weeks' time.

EAST HARLEM (WABC) -- Three more victims killed in the deadly gas explosion in East Harlem are set to be laid to rest Wednesday.
Family and friends with gather to bid a final farewell to George Amadeo.
Funeral services for the 44-year-old handyman will be held at 10 a.m. at the Church of St. Raymond Cemetery in the Bronx.
Services for mother and daughter Rosaura Barrios-Vazquez and Rosaura Hernandez-Barrios, 43 and 22, respectively, will be held from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Ortiz Funeral Home on East 116th Street.
On Tuesday, the NTSB found a gas main leak at the site, but they cautioned that they're still a long way from determining what caused the blast.

The leaking gas main was adjacent to 1646 Park Avenue, one of the buildings destroyed in the March 12 blast. According to the NTSB, the leak was detected during a pressure test on the 8-inch main beneath Park Avenue. A tracer gas escaped under normal operating pressure, investigators said.
Authorities have said the blast erupted about 15 minutes after someone from a neighboring building reported smelling gas. And the NTSB said Friday that that underground tests conducted in the hours after the explosion registered high concentrations of natural gas.
However, board spokesman Eric Weiss said investigators were far from deciding what caused the explosion.
"We don't determine the probable cause until the very, very end," he said.

Normally, most sane Londoners recognise snow for what it is - a cold, slippery pest that ruins train travel, turns pavements into death traps and eventually lurks in the gutter, grey and melting.
However, a select group of kids and adults in London were today offered a solution to the capital's first snowless winter for 12 years with the launch of a unique 'Adopt a Snowman' pop-up stand that allowed them to walk away with their very own frozen friend.
With temperatures already soaring following the wettest winter on record, the first-of-its-kind installation - located near Covent Garden - ensured snow-lovers didn't miss out on what many consider an important and traditional winter pastime, playing with a snowman.
Visitors to the pop-up left with their own snowman inspired by characters in the Disney movie Frozen, complete with their very own adoption papers and traditional attire. And with the thermometer tipping nearly 20 degrees, each snowman came with an insulated carry case to avoid puddles on the bus.
We're betting that the snowmen didn't last beyond lunchtime. But we hope their owners had a good time with them until they succumbed.
The initiative, which took place on the last day of winter, was created by Walt Disney Home Entertainment to celebrate the upcoming release of the double Academy Award winning filmFrozen.

The topic of cover crops has been getting lots of discussion. Cover crops are not new but we are certainly looking more at their benefits in recent years. Green manure crops were an early method to add nitrogen to the soil. Ten to 15 years ago, planting a cover crop such as winter rye following a corn silage harvest was used to reduce erosion on mostly bare ground. We now realize the benefits of rooting depth to break up soil's hard pan and how roots bring microbial activity to the soil. Cover crops can also fix nitrogen or scavenge nitrogen in the soil while adding organic matter and ground cover, improving water holding capacity and providing forage for livestock.
Cover crops work best when included in a whole farm cropping system. Cover crops can provide additional forage supply to a livestock farm when used as hay, silage, baleage or grazed in rotation while still providing the other benefits as well. But the questions that need to be considered are what and when. What cover crops provide the best forage? When will I plant? When and how to harvest? And, will this be profitable for me?
A variety of cover crops can work for forage. Which one you use may depend on when you want to plant it. Probably the most common scenario is to plant a cover crop following small grain harvest or corn silage harvest. This would be planted sometime from the middle of August to the middle of September. A cool season crop such as a small grain would be a likely choice. Do you plan to graze it in the fall or let it grow until spring and harvest it for silage, baleage or hay?
Here are some possible mixes and planting strategies to consider:
Mixes of different size seeds require certain considerations at planting. The best method is to use a drill with two different seed boxes and the ability to sow the small grain at an inch and a half deep while sowing the smaller seeds at a quarter to one half inch deep and pressed firmly. Research has been done to evaluate sowing both sizes of seeds together at one inch deep. Depending on soil type, this may or may not be successful.
A heavier soil type makes this a risky method because the smaller seed will not emerge from that depth. Broadcasting seed of different sizes is affected by seed weight and density. Larger, heavier seeds tend to be distributed further from a cyclone seeder. Smaller and lighter seed do not carry as far and can be carried by the wind as well. The result can be streaking of seed with this type of seeding. Broadcasting seed, with or without light tillage, requires a higher seeding rate to obtain similar stand density. For these reasons, it is usually more successful to use a drill.
As always, working with your team of farm, nutrition and agronomy members will help to formulate a plan for your operation. These are guidelines to get started that hopefully will lead to a greater forage supply for your farm.

The drought gives and the drought takes away, at least for the state's multibillion dollar landscaping, gardening and nursing industry.
Many consumers are postponing or canceling planting or landscaping changes because of worries over water shortages and drought-based water rates. Gov. Jerry Brown has ordered a moratorium on nonessential new landscaping on or along state freeways, highways, and buildings.
But other consumers see this as the time to overhaul yards, landscape with drought-resistant plants and add efficient irrigation. And many water agencies are paying bounties to customers who jettison lawns.
Landscaper Roxy Wolosenko is benefiting from both sides of the coin.

California's drought could cause hardships for the state's landscaping and gardening industry as people think twice about putting in new lawns and plants amid water shortages and potential restrictions. (Aric Crabb/Bay Area News Group) ( ARIC CRABB )
"People are definitely landscaping," said the owner of Roxy Designs in Pleasant Hill, "and they're hiring me to take out a lot of lawns." She said she averages five to six calls a week from people who want to replace lawns with drought tolerant plants and ground cover.
Experts say it is still hard to predict how the industry will fare this year, but many are optimistic.
"This drought is a huge opportunity for people to make horticultural changes that can save money and water," said Jon Singley, founder of Blue Spruce Landscaping and Construction in Campbell. "I think a green industry professional who is well educated and appreciates using the appropriate material on the right site is going to come out of this fine."
He and other landscapers say their business is anything but drying up as people plan landscaping and irrigation changes to reduce outdoor watering -- which consumes more than half of the water used at the typical California home. Of course, in the Bay Area's microclimates, water use -- and availability -- can vary significantly from place to place.
"People are keenly aware of their water bills and what they could become this year," Singley said.
