Entrepreneur wants to join parcels to expand restoration, plant business - March 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Published: Tuesday, March 18, 2014, 12:56a.m. Updated 42 minutes ago

The seed of a future career was planted early in David Hails.

I watered plants on the way home from school every day, said Hails, who as a 9-year-old would walk to his job at Everything Green, a since-closed Greensburg plant store.

An entrepreneur even then, he grew his own plants to sell in the shop.

I grew sensitive plants the ones where you touch them and they'd fold up, he said. They were big in the '70s. I'd sell them for 50 cents each. I had a mother plant at home that would produce the seeds.

His early agrarian efforts have germinated into a flourishing enterprise.

Hails owns three businesses in Washington Township and wants to expand them.

In April, he'll seek approval from the township supervisors to join five parcels along Goodview Drive that he's bought during the years into one 20-acre property, which he intends to name the Everything Green Business Park, after his childhood post.

Cheryl Dickey, Washington Township's planning commission secretary, said Hails is finalizing paperwork and she isn't aware of any no problems related to the proposal.

He's a good business for the township, Dickey said.

Lane restriction scheduled for Eggners Ferry Bridge - March 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to restrict traffic to one lane on the US 68/KY 80 Eggners Ferry Bridge during daylight hours starting Wednesday, March 19, according to Keith Todd, Public Information officer for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's District One and Two.

The lane restriction is to allow concrete patching on the bridge deck.

The US 68/KY 80 Eggners Ferry Bridge is at US 68 Marshall County mile point 28.146 and Trigg County mile point 0.0 at the western entrance to Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area.

Todd said the KYTC District 1 Bridge Crew will be using high strength concrete to patch the deck driving surface. Due to the time required for concrete to cure by the end of the day, the work is expected to take about a week to complete.

Motorists should be prepared to encounter one lane traffic with alternating flow controlled by flaggers from about 8 a.m. to about 5 p.m., CDT, each weekday, whenever weather allows. Motorists be alert for slowing and stopped traffic on the bridge approaches. Appropriate caution is required where equipment, flaggers, and mainteance personnel are on the bridge deck in close proximity to traffic flow, he added.

The existing Eggners Ferry Bridge opened to traffic in March 1932. It carries approximately 2800 vehicles across Kentucky Lake/The Tennessee River in an average day.

A 322 ft. span of the Eggners Ferry Bridge was struck and knocked into Kentucky Lake by the 8200 ton Cargo Ship Delta Mariner on the night of January 26, 2012. KYTC engineers developed plans to rebuild the missing span and restore traffic to the bridge in 17 weeks.

Work has already started on construction of a replacement bridge immediately downstream from the existing Eggners Ferry Bridge. Work on a bridge across a lagoon and earthen causeways for the new lake crossing are nearing completion. Work on a new $131.5 million Basket Handle Arch main river crossing at the site is expected to start in a matter of weeks. For more information go to http://www.lakebridges.com.

The existing Eggners Ferry Bridge is at Tennessee River navigation mile point 41.7 near Aurora.

CNN: Hostage Crisis in Obamas Cabinet as NRA Set to Block Surgeon General Nominee? - March 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

President Barack Obamas nominee to become the next Surgeon General, Vivek Hallergere Murthy, appears unlikely to be confirmed for the post on Monday. A CNN panel confirmed that even Senate Democrats are wary of voting to confirm Murthy because, as CNN anchor John King put it, his only crime is he agrees with the president and the National Rifle Association opposes his nomination. King asked if Obamas cabinet is now in the midst of a hostage crisis with the NRA as captors.

King began by noting that Republicans are being joined by a number of Democrats openly opposing Murthys nomination. Dr. Murthys crime is he agrees with the president that you need more gun controls, King observed. He cant get a vote because the National Rifle Association has served notice it will punish anybody who supports him.

Why walk the plank if youre a red state Democrat when the NRA is actually scoring this vote? asked POLITICOs Manu Raju. [Senate Majority Leader] Harry Reid (D-NV) wants to protect his vulnerable Democrats in tough races.

The question is, if youre in the Obama cabinet, is it now a hostage crisis? King asked. And you cant lead because you cant get your replacement confirmed?

Lets hope William Shatners negotiator skills work at Home Depot.

The TV legend and Priceline pitchman will next star in a home-renovation reality show for DIY Network.

The channel has started production on The Shatner Project which will follow Shatner (Star Trek, Boston Legal) and his wife, Liz, as they enlist the help of a construction team to gut their 1970s-style California home including the kitchen, living room and dining room and remodel Shatners favorite hangout spot, the media room.

The couple also plans to renovate the front patio to create a space for big family parties (he has three children from his first marriage and five grandchildren).

I am embracing change, said Shatner in the announcement. Our home will be unfamiliar territory for a while but I am excited by all of it. The series will premiere later this year.

Excela rooms solely private - March 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Published: Tuesday, March 18, 2014, 12:01a.m. Updated 2 hours ago

A patient no longer will have to ask for a private room at any of the three hospitals operated by Excela Health.

On Saturday, Excela officials converted the last of its hospitals Westmoreland Hospital in Greensburg to all private rooms, health system officials said.

Private rooms are the norm in new construction, said Maryann Singley, vice president of patient care services at Westmoreland Hospital.

The concept is wellness-oriented and promotes rest and recovery by removing the added distractions of another person sharing the room.

Latrobe Hospital converted all its rooms to single-patient in 2011. Frick Hospital in Mt. Pleasant changed its rooms as part of remodeling done in 2012-13, a spokeswoman said.

I don't think it's a question of competitiveness as much as it is patient preference and the trends nationally in admissions, Excela spokeswoman Robin Jennings said.

Hospital admissions are down nationwide, in part because of more surgeries being done via outpatient procedures, she explained. The outpatient surgeries have freed more spaces in hospital rooms.

A patient in a private room has fewer people entering each day, reducing the patient's perception about noise and busyness, Singley said.

One patient to a room further enhances the ability to have face-to-face conversations about diagnosis, prognosis and treatment, Excela officials said.

Fireplaces add ambiance, value - March 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- Vikki Ruisch had a fireplace in her house, but it was in a room her family barely used. So during a remodeling project last year, she had a fireplace built in her heavily trafficked living room, where everyone could enjoy it.

Ruisch figured it would add value to her Woodcliff Lake, N.J., house, but that wasn't really an incentive. She grew up having a fireplace in her home and just wanted one, or two. She also had one put in the master bedroom.

"I don't know anyone who doesn't like a fireplace," she said. "We use ours, especially this winter. My husband puts the one on in the bedroom when he gets up about an hour before me, and then it's nice and toasty by the time I get up."

Ruisch is one of many home and business owners installing fireplaces to add ambience, warmth and financial value to where they live and work. A fireplace can increase a home's value by 6 to 12 percent, according to the National Center for Real Estate Research of Littleton, Colo.

In addition to the standard stone or brick fireplaces found in typical settings like single-family homes and ski lodges, temporary hearths can be installed in the tiniest of apartments and the most intimate of restaurants.

Ventless fireplaces are a swiftly growing segment of the market, targeted for apartments or other buildings where permanent changes can't be made. Those that run on electricity can, with the flip of a switch, heat a space up to about 400 square feet, or, in hot weather operate with no warming element.

One manufacturer, HearthCabinet Ventless Fireplaces in New York City, offers products that use alcohol gel cartridges instead of electricity, said Sara Check, marketing and sales manager for the company.

"Lots of people wanted a fireplace and didn't have a chimney, gas line or vent," Check said. "So we are filling a void in a niche market. The cartridges work like a sterno canister works. You can replace the top and then use it again."

One of the drawbacks to ventless fireplaces, specifically because there is no way to send gases outside the building, is that they often emit an odor, similar to the smell from an oven when it is on. But Check said HearthCabinet throws off little, if any odor, because of the gel cartridges it uses.

"Since our cartridges use isopropyl alcohol, our emissions don't really have an odor," she said.

New alternative decking, roofing and more in the news - March 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

With spring just around the corner, building products makers are hoping that homeowners will begin looking to upgrading their homes after a long, hard winter. The latest building and construction products introduced by some of the biggest names in alternative decking, railing and roofing products industry promise to make homes more attractive with less maintenance. And many of these products are made with a percentage of recycled materials, making them attractive from an environmental standpoint.

    Ply Gem

For example, Ply Gem, a maker of a whole range of exterior building products including siding, windows, roofing, trim, shutters and accents, launched its extruded cellular PVC trip moldings that the company says are a "low-maintenance alternative to wood trim, and designed to work well with nearly any siding type." Ply Gem Trim is available in smooth or an authentic wood-grain finish, but unlike wood and treated wood, the products are made from cellular PVC and absorb

no moisture. The trim and moldings are also resistant to dirt, rotting, cracking or warping, and hold paint better than wood, especially in damp climates and extreme temperatures. Additionally, it is manufactured without cellulose, making it resistant to insects, termites and other pests.

At the recent International Builders Show in Las Vegas, Ply Gem also unveiled its new engineered slate roofing. Molded from nearly 100% recycled materials, using natural slate, Ply Gem's new engineered slate shingles feature deep shadow lines and chiseled edges. To make installation easy, Ply Gem's engineered slate shingles are lighter weight and manufactured with indented nail flanges, eliminating the need for additional framing support or any special tools.

The new engineered slate roofing has been tested to withstand wind-loads of up to 110 mph, as well as golf ball-sized "hail stones," and earning one of the industry's highest fire ratings. These shingles are "virtually indestructible," according to Ply Gem.

    CertainTeed

Speaking of roofs, CertainTeed introduced seven new roofing ventilation products that now makes that company able to provide a single source for complete roof systems. Part of the CertainTeed Integrity Roof System, the new product line includes CertainTeed Ridge Vent, CertainTeed Rolled Vent, and CertainTeed Intake Vent.

The CertainTeed Ridge Vent is available in 7, 9 and 12-inches with both filtered and unfiltered options. Each ridge vent is made of high quality co-polymer to remain sturdy, nailable and flexible.

Lowestoft-based Apex Scaffolding, which was set up 1999, and sister company Apex Roofing, launched two years ago, have enjoyed an encouraging start to 2014, with an increase in the volume and value of contracts.

Jackie Biswell, who runs Apex Roofing, said: The year has started really well for us, with a noticeable increase in enquiries coming in for planned refurbishment works.

As the construction sector output grows there becomes more opportunities for specialist contractors like us, who tend to be small businesses. The signs are good so were extremely positive for the year ahead.

Based on the start of the year and predicted sector growth figures were roughly estimating that our business will grow by 30% this year.

The latest Construction Trade Survey shows that construction activity rose in the final quarter of 2013, marking the first time in more than five years that the industry recorded three consecutive quarters of growth.

Regional forecasts from surveying organisation Leading Edge are predicting that London and the East of England are the only two regions in the UK expected to be larger in output terms in 2015 than they were in 2005.
