Hanger triggers flooding - March 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

It was all rock and roll when a tenant of Malbas Backpackers decided to hang a coat hanger from a sprinkler system, causing mass flooding to the hotel and the nightclub below.

Malbas Backpackers manager and caretaker Darren McLean said he was running an errand last Saturday and when he returned at about 6.30pm, the alarms were set off.

One of the tenants had hung a coat hanger from a sprinkler, setting off sprinklers throughout the building.

The building was flooded and leaked through the ceiling into Malbas Night Club Nelson, which was not affiliated to the backpackers.

McLean understood the night club had to close its back bar on the Saturday night. It was "obviously a shame but the same could be said to all of us", he said.

"It was just one of those unfortunate things that happens."

The backpackers was not extensively damaged, he said.

All the computers and electrical equipment had to be removed for a week.

They had lost some business as they had to turn customers away, but hoped insurance would cover the loss, he said.

The owner was contemplating taking the perpetrator, who no longer lived at the backpackers, to the disputes tribunal.

Martelli sheds tears, gets last laugh - March 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

NEW YORK - You've seen Phil Martelli get angry, edgy, streetwise, sarcastic, proud. You've seen him happy.

This was different. As soon as his St. Joseph's Hawks won the Atlantic 10 tournament on Sunday, Martelli's chin started to quiver. He looked behind his team's bench, where his wife had already broken down in tears.

"I was trying to hold off," Martelli said later. "When I saw her and how emotional she was, I broke."

Did Judy Martelli often get full-on emotional like that after the big ones? She shook her head.

"This was different," she said after the Hawks found out they would play Connecticut on Thursday in the first round of the NCAA East Regional in Buffalo.

In tears on the court, Martelli was back to himself soon enough. When he found out St. Joe's was going to the same site as Villanova and would face the Wildcats if they both won in the first round, Martelli quipped: "I'll call Jay Wright. I'm sure they're flying whatever the biggest plane is . . . A 797. Maybe we can sit in the back."

Martelli said he hadn't seen UConn much. "I hear they have great women's basketball," he said with a little smile - Huskies women's coach Geno Auriemma is his buddy.

But as soon as St. Joe's beat VCU to become A-10 champ for the first time since 1997, Martelli lost it. A lot of things had hit him since the last season ended. He had lost a sister and a sister-in-law. A son had lost his job in the Mike Rice scandal at Rutgers.

Eagles recruit Xavier Ellis sheds fitness issues - March 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

West Coast recruit Xavier Ellis admits he was glad former coach John Worsfold wasn't around to challenge him to a race when he arrived for the AFL club's pre-season training.

Ellis struggled to maintain his elite fitness levels during his last three years at Hawthorn, with a myriad of foot, calf and knee injuries restricting him to just 16 games over that period.

The 2008 premiership midfielder secured a trade to West Coast at the end of last year, but he knew he was starting way behind others at the start of pre-season.

"I didn't come over in peak condition. I didn't play much footy for a couple of years, so I was a bit overweight, sloppy and a bit unfit," Ellis said.

"I remember Murray Newman losing a 2km (time trial) to John Worsfold (in 2012). He would have had me too.

"But I'm fit now. The fitness staff and doctors have been great."

If Ellis was a superstitious person, the injury-prone midfielder would have been a tad worried when he first arrived in Perth.

"I moved all my stuff over. Most of it broke on the train," he said with a laugh.

Lorry sheds its load near Ashcott - March 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Lorry sheds its load near Ashcott

8:45pm Sunday 16th March 2014 in News By Newsdesk

FIRE crews were called to Ashcott today after containers from a lorry spilt black sludge all over the road.

The lorry had shed its load of containers on the A39 at around 3pm this afternoon (March 16).

A fire team from Street was sent to assess the situation and a Hazardous Materials Officer was also sent to try to identify the substance. Another fire crew from Glastonbury was sent for safety.

A fire service spokesman said: "Crews found four 1,000 litre containers which had split on impact and all four had spilled their contents onto the highway.

"A lamp post was also struck and damaged. Crews blocked nearby drains to prevent sludge entering water courses. The Environment Agency was informed and Police and Highways were on the scene.

"Four further containers were reported in the village of Ashcott. Two containers were leaking. Crews made this area safe also."

The substance is thought to be a waste product and not hazardous to health.

Brumbies battered as Speight falls - March 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Battling: Stephen Larkham

Following the news that Henry Speight will be the latest addition to treatment room, Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham remains composed.

A morale-boosting win over the Waratahs on Saturday gave last year's finalists something to cheer after suffering from injuries in recent weeks.

Speight is expected to be out for six weeks with a fractured jaw, joining David Pocock, Christian Lealiifano, Fotu Auelua and Leon Power on the sidelines.

A tough run now awaits Larkham and fellow coach Laurie Fisher as they face a tough run against the Stormers, Rebels, Blues and Reds.

"We have a tough stretch ahead. We've been battered around, we've done a fair bit of travel, but we've found some confidence and cohesion," Larkham told the Sydney Morning Herald.

"The guys played some superb rugby against NSW. But we have to be careful with how we manage our squad because of injuries.

"The win against the Waratahs shows we can stand up through pressure ... find a way to solve problems. It allows you to have a belief that you can get through anything no matter what they throw at you.

"We have to get through this period ... we've had our fair share of injuries early but guys who were on the fringe at the start of the season now have an opportunity to play."

Some welcome news for the Brumbies after losing Speight is that Joe Tomane is back in contention after recovering from a foot injury.

Urgent care centers aim to fill health need - March 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By AMANDA CUDA/Connecticut Post/March 16, 2014

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) Susan Maldonado doesnt have time to spend all day in a crowded doctors office or emergency room.

She works full time and goes to school full time, so her time is at a premium. But the Bridgeport resident is sick, and has been for a while, with symptoms that include a high fever.

Looking for some relief, she went to the new Doctors Express Urgent Care clinic on Boston Avenue in Bridgeport, which opened March 3.

For many people, urgent care clinics provide a lower-cost, more accessible alternative to doctors offices and hospital emergency rooms. Theyre typically open longer hours than most doctors offices, and are open on weekends.

Maldonado said that kind of convenience is part of why she picked the Boston Avenue clinic. Its also a two-minute drive from her home and she found the atmosphere of the office, which sits in a strip mall near the Boston Avenue Burger King, a more pleasant environment than most doctors offices.

Its not crowded, Maldonado said. The people arent rude. Its nice.

It seems that others share her interest in convenient health care, as urgent care centers have been popping up at a brisk rate in recent years. According to the American Academy of Urgent Care, the number of these walk-in, stand-alone urgent care facilities has increased from 8,000 to 9,300 within the past five years, and about 50 to 100 new clinics open every year.

These clinics provide a variety of medical services, from treating colds and the flu, to setting broken bones to conducting school- or employer-mandated physicals. Some say the clinics are needed in todays health care landscape, as they help keep uninsured and underinsured people from seeking costly care in the emergency room.

The hospitals are full of people who dont really need (emergency room) care, said Yvonne Lederer, market director for the Doctors Express Bridgeport sites.
