Grand Haven Area Public Schools Superintendent Keith Konarska said he wishes a few more residents would have attended the information meeting, but hes hopeful the small attendance means theyve reached people through previous meetings. He said the district has hosted about two-dozen meetings so far with service clubs, booster clubs, PTAs and residents.

Proposal 1 calls for a zero-mill tax increase because of some of the districts previous debt falling off, Konarska said. The proposal would generate about $36 million throughout a 10-year plan.

The proposal includes: 1-to-1 technology devices Infrastructure improvements Desktop computer replacements Instructional technology replacements Phone system upgrade Equipment replacement servers, media, copiers Updated security cameras Bus replacements Student transportation tracking system Roof replacements Asphalt replacement Student learning equipment Improved fire systems at Lakeshore Middle School and Griffin Elementary School Secure entrance systems

Konarska said Proposal 2 would be a small bump up a 0.47-mill property tax hike and it would generate about $9.69 million.

The proposal includes: Districtwide fencing Asbestos removal Equipment replacement classroom tables, student desks, lockers, cafeteria tables Athletic improvements seat replacement, turf replacement, floor refinishing, weight room addition Arts improvements classroom space, increase storage, ceiling replacement Improved traffic areas at Lakeshore Middle School and Grand Haven High School

Proposal 2 is contingent on the passing of Proposal 1.

The owner of a home with a $100,000 taxable value would see an annual increase of $47 if the proposals are supported by district voters on May 6.

Konarska said the bond proposals would provide relief to the school districts general fund and allow the district to focus that money on maintaining instructional funds.

Voters will also decide the fate of an 18-mill renewal for nonprincipal properties and other nonexempt property, and 6 mills on commercial properties. The annual renewal doesnt impact the taxes on a homeowners principal residence.

The nonprincipal operating millage brings in more than $17.3 million for maintaining the districts programs and services.

There is no needle on a compass rose. The purpose of the nautical symbol is to depict the directions on a map -- true north, south, east and west, and all points in between. Needle or not, the wood inlaid compass rose in the handsome Tudor-style Colonial house at 20 Beagling Hill Circle is pointing its next residents homeward. The rose is set into the marble tile floor of the home's two-story foyer.

The house sits in a private setting in The Ridge of Greenfield Hill, Fairfield's only gated community of luxury homes. The Ridge provides a quiet community not far from the Westport border, and surprisingly close to shopping and commuter routes, given its bucolic location.

The house provides a combination of large entertaining and family spaces. Recreational activities are available on the two-acre level property as well as in the community itself. The house has a heated in-ground Gunite swimming pool with a retractable cover and hot tub, while the neighborhood association has a clubhouse, community swimming pool and tennis courts.

The brick, stucco and wood house was built in 1989, but has since been updated and enhanced throughout. The front entrance features double doors with decorative panes of leaded and beveled glass and above them is a large Palladian window.

Inside, it has 6,302 square feet of living space that includes a new chef's kitchen with double appliances, a large center island, granite counters, two built-in computer work stations, and a pot-filler over the gas range. There is also a sliding door to the wood deck.

In the sunken formal living room there is a two-story Palladian window and a fireplace. In one section of the room the ceiling is vaulted. Another portion has a nine-foot-plus coffered ceiling. The family room is also sunken and has its own gas-fueled fireplace embedded in a wall of red brick with a beam mantle and wet bar with a granite counter, glass-front cabinets, beverage refrigerator and icemaker. A sliding door leads to a spacious sunroom, which has wood paneled walls, walls of windows, skylights and French doors to the deck.

Another door leads to a room with ceramic tile flooring, a full bath and a door to the deck. It's a flexible purpose space that the current family uses as a gym. A generous-size mudroom on the opposite end of the house has a built-in bench, closets and cubbies.

Audio speakers are built into the walls in the formal living and dining rooms and kitchen.

On the second floor, the master bedroom suite is quite large and yet is divided in such a way that it feels warm and intimate. Its dressing or sitting room has a fireplace; the walk-in closet is outfitted with numerous built-in drawers, shelves and other organizers, and the master bath has a jetted tub and granite vanity.

In addition to several more bedrooms this floor also has an oversized recreation or media room with a vaulted ceiling and long wall of built-in bookshelves.
