A mini-home with a view of the Long Range Mountains, one of the attractions to living in the area.
All it takes is a little imagination and a bit of determination when it comes to making a plan come together. Those are two of the characteristics Shane Lomond has, and with experience and the right tools, hes making big moves in the home building industry on the southwest coast.
At the tender age of 12, Lomond started mowing lawns, and by 14 he was submitting business proposals to the town of Port aux Basques, offering lawn mowing services. His strong business sense hasnt left him.
The idea of starting a construction company was born in 1992, and during many years living out West, Lomond built everything from sheds to malls to bowling alleys, with his wife taking care of the books and day-to-day office management.
Jeanette is the behind-the-scenes person, said Lomond. She plays a crucial role in both the business and family affairs.
They brought that experience back home to Newfoundland with them in 2009, raising their young family, with Lomond steadily gaining a reputation as a developer and builder on the southwest coast.
Their company, Jest Construction, employs four seasonal workers and focuses on developing land, hauling gravel and building homes.

DANVILLE The Solid Waste Division of the Danville Public Works Department announces that the beginning of the spring cleanup collection period will be delayed by one week due to the weather and related conditions.
Recent weather has not been good for lawn cleanup or landscape work performed by residents. In addition, severe winter weather created construction delays in the completion of the citys new Yard Waste Facility.
Weekly collection will now begin on Monday, April 7.
This spring cleanup period, which includes both yard waste bags and Toters, will be extended until Friday, May 2, before the Toter-Only Collection period begins on Monday, May 5, beginning with Zone B.
The Yard Waste Collection Program has three specific time periods: Spring Cleanup (weekly pickup, Toters and yard waste bags) that begins April 7 and lasts until May 2; Toter Collection (bi-weekly pickup Toters only) from May 5 to Sept. 27 (beginning with Zone B); and Fall Cleanup (weekly pickup Toters and yard waste bags) from Sept. 30 to Dec. 13.
During this spring cleanup period, yard waste will be collected weekly and on the same day as regular household waste service.
It should be placed at the curb or street edge no later than 6 a.m. on your collection day and no earlier than 4 p.m. the night prior to collection. Yard waste should not be placed along or in any alley.
From April 7 to May 2, all yard waste collected within the city must be placed in either a Toter with a 2014 yard waste sticker attached or an approved two-ply paper yard waste bag. Two-ply paper yard waste bags are available at various retail stores, pricing set by stores. No tape or adhesive is permitted on yard waste bags and yard waste contained in plastic bags or cardboard boxes will not be collected.
Brush should be placed no closer than 2 feet from the Toter, bundled, tied with cotton twine or string, and no larger than 3 inches in diameter or more than 4 feet long.
Yard waste stickers are $35, Toters are $65 and both are sold at the Robert E. Jones Municipal Building, 17 W. Main St., and at Danville Public Works, 1155 E. Voorhees St.

At first glance you might think Vince Cable has adjusted pretty well to Mars' hostile environment.
Despite the chilly 63 C temperatures and lack of oxygen, the MP appears relaxed, wearing just a suit and tie.
But the Secretary of State for Business is in fact visiting a test yard in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, designed to replicate Mars.
The new Airbus Defence Space Mars Yard measures 98ft (30 metres) by 43ft (13 metres) and contains more than 300 tonnes of sand meaning engineers can test the next generation of vehicles destined to explore the red planet.

The landslide that destroyed a rural community in Washington state was one of the deadliest in U.S. history.
As of Friday, the official death toll from Saturdays slide in Oso stood at 17, though additional bodies have been discovered but not yet counted. Scores of people remained missing, and authorities expected to update the numbers Friday evening.
Some of the countrys other deadliest landslides:
Mar. 12, 1928: Five hundred people lost their lives when a dam in San Francisquito Canyon, Calif., collapsed. An abutment of the St. Francis Dam gave way when the ground beneath it became saturated with water from the reservoir. The abutment was built on the site of a previous landslide.
Aug. 19-20, 1969: Landslides and flooding in the wake of Hurricane Camille took the lives of 150 people in Nelson County, Va. The hurricane dumped up to 27 inches of rain in the area. Most of the deaths were the result of blunt-force injuries from trees, rocks and other debris, according to the U.S. Geological Service.
Oct. 7, 1985: The hillside shantytown of Mameyes in Puerto Rico was buried under tons of mud loosened by a 30-hour deluge from tropical storm Isabel. The mudslide claimed 129 lives.
Jan. 4-6, 1982: At least 30 people were killed in devastating mudslides in the San Francisco area. Most of the deaths occurred in Santa Cruz county, which President Ronald Reagan declared a disaster area along with Marin, Contra Costa, San Mateo, Sonoma counties.
Aug. 17, 1959: An earthquake rocked an area west of Yellowstone National Park resulting in 26 deaths. Fifty million tons of mountain slid into Madison Canyon near Hebgen Dam.

El Nino havoc possible this year -

When an El Nino event is predicted, environment controllers and policy-makers in the region should impose a total ban on large-scale land clearing or open burning, not just in Malaysia (or Sarawak) but also in the other countries of Southeast Asia.
RECORD-BREAKING heat, brought on by El Nino, could wreak havoc on weather patterns this year.
Based on an early warning report, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), there is a 75 per cent chance of such an event occurring in 2014.
The strongest effects on precipitation are in Southeast Asia and the western Pacific Ocean, especially in the dry season (August to November).
The highest global temperatures were reportedly recorded during the last strong El Nino in 1998.
Given the continued increases in baseline temperature around the world, an El Nino event this year could lead to record-breaking heat.
According to the PNAS report, this could send temperatures soaring worldwide, causing droughts in Australia and Southeast Asia, heavy rain and flooding in parts of the US and South America.
This time around if it happens Sarawak and Malaysia, as a whole, will not be spared.
A senior officer from the Malaysia Meteorological Department in Kuala Lumpur Wong Teck Kiong said Malaysia would definitely be affected if El Nino struck again.

Nate Berkus is on a major roll.
The renowned interior designer's spring collection for Target hit stores last month, he scored a gig staring in a Banana Republic ad campaign, and he's a host/judge/producer on NBC's new reality competition series, American Dream Builders. He's also just a really cool guy.
In Nate's new show, designers compete against each other to create the best redesigned home for families. If it sounds both dramatic and uplifting, that's cause it is. Since Nate also acts as one of the show's judges, clearly he is the ultimate person to go to for design advice. So, we did.
We caught up with Nate to find out exactly what he recommends for refreshing your digs this spring, where he goes to find the best deals and why he's not into following trends when it comes to interior design.
NEWS: Spring nail polish + sandals combos
What are your favorite ways to redesign your space for spring? In the spring it's all about outdoor living. Have fun overhauling your yard and take inspiration from your living room, but under the trees. Get an outdoor rug and lots of moveable pieces...stools, cord chairs, over sized pillows for seating. Mirrors help to create the illusion of a bigger space. And put a hammock up. Spring is allabout casual elegance and easy entertaining. The best kind!
What's a really common mistake people make when redecorating? The thing is, design isn't about how fast or cheaply you can do it. Take your timethe best spaces are the ones assembled over time.
Where are your favorite places to shop for affordable home goods?Target, of course. And not just because my own collection is sold there! And I love to shop antiques markets. They are the best for one-of-a kind, vintage finds that feel special.
What are your favorite underground/lesser-known interior design stores?I'm obsessed with ShowPlace Antiques on 25th Street in New York. It's the first place I go to when I'm looking for a gift, or for something unique for a design project.
