Stanton clears two fences with one swing - March 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    ByJoe Frisaro/MLB.com|3/10/2014 6:27 P.M. ET

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Clearing one fence wasn't enough for Giancarlo Stanton on Monday afternoon, so he decided to hurdle two with one mighty swing in Miami's 11-1 win over the Mets at Tradition Field.

Stanton's two-run blast off Jack Leathersich was yet another video game-like moment for the 24-year-old slugger.

The home run sailed beyond the outfield wall in left and onto Field 7, directly behind the main field, of the Mets' complex.

Estimates aren't provided for Grapefruit League home runs, but if they were, Stanton's likely would rank among the longest shots thus far in Spring Training.

It was an especially impressive at-bat, because before the homer, Stanton launched a towering drive to left that landed foul. That shot may have traveled farther, and it certainly was higher. A few pitches later, he delivered his second homer in as many games.

So often a player who connects on a long drive that sails foul doesn't follow with a homer in the same at-bat.

"I just wanted to hit the ball hard," Stanton said. "I've seen where I've done it and other players have done it, when you hit a ball like that foul, you go ahead and call it a day with that at-bat. That was more of my focus, to make sure I wasn't like, 'Hey, I hit a home run foul, good for me.' That was more of what I was thinking."

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- All had been quiet on the injury front until Monday afternoon, when the Marlins revealed two setbacks.

After an 11-1 win over the Mets at Tradition Field, a couple of ailments were announced. Jeff Baker was replaced in the second inning because of a strained left quad, and Rafael Furcal exited in the fifth inning with a strained left hamstring.

NEWORLEANS--Gov. Bobby Jindals legislative priorities are rather limited compared to last year, when he failed to get lawmakers to go along with his tax swap idea.

By contrast, this year Mayor Mitch Landrieu is swinging for the fences.

Jindal is pushing for better workforce development, tort reform and stronger action against human trafficking in the state. He is also asking lawmakers to limit the authority of the Eastbank Flood Protection Board, which is now suing the oil and gas industry.

Beyond that, his legislative agenda is rather limited.

Not only in terms of tax reform, but education reform, said Eyewitness News political analyst Clancy DuBos. He just doesnt seem to be as ambitious in terms of his legislative agenda as he was in prior years.

Landrieu, a former state representative, is working with the New Orleans delegation on a wide range of bills.

Tribute to the working man - March 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

COEUR d'ALENE - It's a tribute to the American worker, who Dean Haagenson said is very much underappreciated.

"You don't appreciate the electrician until the electricity goes out, and you don't appreciate the plumber until the sewer backs up," he told the city of Coeur d'Alene's General Services Committee on Monday. "Those are the people who make this country work and we need to appreciate them."

Haagenson, CEO of Contractors Northwest, Inc., is donating the $50,000 statue titled "American Worker" to the city, and wants the piece to be located in McEuen Park, which his firm is in the process of constructing.

He hired local artist Terry Lee to sculpt the bronze statue, which should be completed within the next few months.

Lee presented to the committee a "very rough draft" marquette of the piece he plans to sculpt for Haagenson, and explained the process he will use to create the bronze sculpture.

The statue will be a construction worker that stands a full 6-feet, 2-inches tall, and it will be placed on a 3-foot by 3-foot base that is anchored in concrete.

It will also include a plaque that reads: "To the farmers, loggers, miners, constructions workers and all who build America, thank you. You have made our country great and prosperous."

The statue will weigh 300 to 350 pounds, Lee said, and because it is set in concrete and reinforced with steel rods, it will be very difficult to remove.

Lee said he will send it to a welder this week, who will build the frame. Lee will begin sculpting the statue out of foam, clay and wax beginning next week.

That process, he said, should take somewhere close to two months, and then he will hire a mold maker to come to his place to make the mold so he doesn't have to risk damaging the clay and wax model in the shipping process.

The Making of Charlie Was a Sinner: Chef hired - March 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Second in a series that follows the creation of Charlie Was a Sinner, the curiously named vegan bar from entrepreneur Nicole Marquis, owner of the HipCityVeg quick-serve shops. Part 1 is here.

It's about five weeks till opening of Charlie Was a Sinner, and workers have turned the old Full Moon Saloon at 131 S. 13th St. into a "vanilla box" of drywall and brick. Electricians were wiring today. Next week will see the installation of French windows to allow the storefront, between Sansom and Walnut Streets, to reach for the sun. This will be a radical departure for the building, which operated in old-time barroom darkness.

Charlie Was a Sinner will be low-lit at night, said owner Nicole Marquis, but by day it will be a cafe "to take advantage of all the energy in this neighborhood."

Now that the drywall is installed, you can get an idea of the layout. Walk in, through a velvet curtain, and a Louis XIV-style armoire and old hotel front desk will greet guests. Next will be the bar and just beyond, a small dining room. The vibe? "HipCityVeg is 'yoga' feel-good," Marquis explained. "This is 'movie' feel-good."

There's a chef on board: Michael Santoro, exec chef and partner at The Mildred in South Philadelphia. Santoro, a Johnson & Wales culinary grad who came to Philadelphia as the first executive chef at Talula's Garden, is developing the menu out of The Mildred's kitchen.

Developers required to use prefab bathroom units from 2nd half of 2014 - March 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SINGAPORE: The push to raise productivity in Singapores construction sector is taking on a new focus this year.

New rules will soon take effect, pushing for greater use of productive technologies such as prefabricated components.

From the second half of 2014, developers will be required to use prefabricated bathroom units (PBUs) for all residential projects on government land sales sites.

Singapore Contractors Association said this is a significant step in getting upstream players like developers onboard productivity initiatives.

PBUs are like huge Lego blocks that are hoisted up by a crane and then stacked, one on top of another.

On average, prefab components already make up one third of each construction project by City Developments (CDL) which has been using prefab construction methods for over a decade.

That is the highest level of prefab adoption among private developers in Singapore, compared to about 50 per cent for public housing projects.

CDL said that with the new rules, more projects could have a prefab component in them in the near future.

Another developer, Frasers Centrepoint, said it has been using a mix of productive technologies in all their developments since 2007.

Cheang Kok Kheong, chief executive officer of Frasers Centrepoint Homes, said: "These include prefabricated railings, precast refuse chutes and dry construction options such as the use of drywall for some of the internal walls.
