City Awards Mowing Contract To Scheer Lawn & Landscape - March 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Scheer Lawn & Landscape, LLC, in Washington will be mowing 12 city properties this summer.

The lone bidder, Scheer, was unanimously awarded the city of Washingtons ground services contract during Mondays city council meeting.

The total bid accepted is $25,230. The budget for the entire project is $30,000.

The parks department said it needed help maintaining an ever-increasing amount of area.

Parks Director Darren Dunkle said after looking at the budget, it was decided to seek out a mowing contract instead of hiring additional workers to help ease the burden on current staff.

The project was budgeted at $30,000, which Dunkle said could be the cost of one new employee. However, the amount of mowing Scheer is going to provide is easily the work of more than one person, Dunkle said.

The base bid for the project included seven sites located the farthest away from the parks department office. That way, it would save the department time and energy by not having to haul mowers across town.

The sites include the fire headquarters, 200 E. 14th St.; Fire Station No. 3, 1651 W. Fifth St.; Fire Station No. 4, 1201 E. Eighth St.; Optimist Park, 2000 E. Ninth St.; McLaughlin Park, 1215 E. Sixth St.; Krog Park, 801 E. Fifth St. and Riverfront Park, Riverview Dr.

All sites will be mowed 30 times, except for the Riverfront Park which will be mowed 15 times. Dunkle said that park is more natural and requires less maintenance.

The bid for the seven sites came in at $18,165, so the city was able to add five additional locations to the contract.

Plan to pool Super funds a joke: Rebels - March 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Melbourne Rebels boss Rob Clarke has warned that centralising Australia's Super Rugby operation risks "blowing up the game once and for all", declaring it "an absolute joke" if officials believe it can solely solve rugby's problems.

The cash-strapped Australian Rugby Union is considering a radical transformation which would see the Rebels, NSW Waratahs and Queensland Reds merge operations to form an eastern seaboard powerhouse.

The ARU's board met on Monday to discuss a potential new model of Rugby Australia where teams would pool assets and cut costs.

"[ARU chief executive] Bill Pulver has talked about challenges in the game and looking at ways to make it more efficient and more effective to deliver our programs," Clarke told SEN radio in Melbourne.

"But to think that a pure centralisation model is going to solve the ills of Australian rugby is an absolute joke.

"And if anybody went down that path, [they'd] be running an enormous risk of blowing up the game once and for all."

Clarke is also adamant the Rebels, who finished 12th last year with five wins, won't be cut from the competition when a new Super Rugby broadcast deal is negotiated next year.

"There are discussions around the broadcast and Super Rugby changing formats ... [it] doesn't mean the Rebels will be axed or combined into anything else, it couldn't be further from the truth," Clarke said.

Bukit Kiara lovers strive on - March 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Activists and authorities are still at loggerheads over the future of the green sanctuary.

    FMT FOCUS

KUALA LUMPUR: Adjacent to the affluent neighbourhood of Taman Tun Dr Ismail lies a green sanctuary that nature lovers have been struggling to keep intact against the authorities intention to turn it into a world class park.

Bukit Kiara, a secondary forest that covers 188.93 hectares of land, boasts a leafy woodland experience with tall trees shading jungle trails and small animals roaming free.

It is a favourite place for joggers, mountain bikers and others seeking relief from the noise and polluted air of the surrounding areas, but they are worried that ongoing efforts by the National Landscape Department (NLD) to turn it into a park might kill its pristine beauty forever.

Once a rubber estate, Bukit Kiara was acquired by the federal government in the 1980s to build public parks and a national mausoleum.

Since then, however, tracts have been given away for golf courses and an equestrian club.

On paper, the hill is divided into seven parcels, with Berjaya Corporation owning 25.1 hectares of it, Measat owning another parcel and the rest belonging to the NLD.

Berjaya wanted to develop its land into real estate, but the bid was blocked by Kuala Lumpur City Hall. At the same time, however, NLD has embarked on a series of efforts to upgrade the hill with built structures.

A perimeter fence 3.5m high and 4.7km long is being erected and is 80% complete. NLD has claimed that the purpose is to demarcate Bukit Kiara from neighbouring private lands.

Revving up design from the scrap heap - March 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Shasta Smith is not your typical grease monkey. Shes an interior designer who also happens to have a thing for vintage motorcycles.

She rides them, she collects them, she mines them for inspiration. She parks her street-legal 1972 Honda racing bike next to her desk.

In fact, anything with wheels kicks her mental motor into high gear. She sees the beauty inside cast-off metal and finds a home indoors for what once was scrapyard junk.

I have two types of clientele, she said. Ive been a full-time interior designer in Sacramento (Calif.) for 15 years, but I also have another type of customer people who want motorcycle design. That has international appeal.

With her distinctive red mane, Smith has attracted a worldwide audience for her design firm, The Vintage Monkey. Shes worked on designs for popular home-improvement TV shows such as House Crashers. In February, her work also was showcased during a New York launch party for a new cable channel, FYI, devoted to creative design. Yet Smith remains mostly anonymous in her hometown of Sacramento.

People are always surprised to find our studio, she said. They say, We had no idea!

When they come through (the studio), their first impression is its a motorcycle shop, she added. But then they realize, no, its something else, something pretty cool.

A 2,000-square-foot garage in Sacramentos industrial area just north of downtown is home to Smiths Vintage Monkey studio and workshop. Elmer, the shop cat, keeps a watchful eye.

The walls, floor and ceiling are lined with projects, several in progress. Almost everything started out as something else.

Im always on the hunt for vintage salvage, Smith said. Then, we create architectural elements based on those findings. We hate throwing anything away.
