Tile repairs, new filtration system, Wyland mural to become glasswork - March 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

If you went swimming early last month at Belmont Parks historic pool, the Plunge, you likely noticed that the Wyland sea-life mural on the south wall was split from pool deck to high ceiling, exposing vertical steel beams. And if you stop by today, youll find the Plunge closed for repairs, with signs of construction throughout the Belmont Park complex.

Planned work on the Plunge pool at the Wavehouse Athletic Club was expected to take up to two weeks for replacement of the nearly 30-year-old filtration system with a modern one that uses fewer chemicals. But draining the pool revealed bigger problems: in places, water had seeped underneath the tile, some of which is dated from the 1920s, and patchwork repairs were failing.

We were stepping in sections of the pool and could sink, said Belmont Parks director of operations, Justin Lopez. The Plunge will be closed until late April, while the pool is repaired and the uncommon small tiles are replaced. The San Diego History Center is ensuring that the new tile maintains the original look of the pool, which debuted in 1925 as the largest saltwater pool in the world.

When the now-freshwater pool reopens, it wont be without its famous artwork. Accessing the old Plunge buildings interior steel structure for repair and reinforcement necessitated removal of sections of drywall, including some on which Wyland painted one his famous Whaling Wall murals in 1989.

Orcas off Point Loma will not be lost, however. Before repair work began, Wyland and his team took hundreds of digital photos of the mural. Steve Creech, executive director of the Wyland Foundation, said, We have been working very closely with the developer to find a solution that not only retains the integrity of the former mural, but does something that we hope will be amazing for everyone.

That solution involves using the photos to replicate the mural on glass panels, which will allow swimmers to enjoy the orcas as before, but will also be transparent from the opposite side of the interior wall, so that gym users can see into the pool area. The effect will be like a bus wrap, explained Lopez. The mural will also be illuminated and visible at night from outside the building.

It isn't only the Plunge thats getting upgraded; hardhats and barriers are everywhere, as much of Belmont Park is being reworked. There are plans for a large rooftop deck, restaurants, new bathrooms, and more even a zipline. The owners expect that by the start of summer, Mission Beachs oceanfront park will be back and better than before.

Sprinkler system, new station help contain fire at Olympus Junior High - March 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

HOLLADAY Fire crews credit an upgraded sprinkler system and a new fire station nearby with containing a fire at Olympus Junior High School.

A curtain caught fire near the stage at Olympus Junior High, 2217 E. Murray Holladay Road, just before 7 p.m. Thursday, and smoke and heat activated the sprinklers, Unified Fire Capt. Fitzgerald Petersen said.

Unified fire crews, stationed in the new Station No. 104 across the street, responded within moments of the alarm and found the school filled with smoke, Fitzgerald said. The firehouse opened in January.

The fire was contained to one alarm, Petersen said. No one was in the building at the time, and the cause of the fire has not been identified.

The sprinklers were only triggered at the scene of the fire. No other areas of the school experienced water damage.

"It worked perfectly," Petersen said. "We're very happy with the response, how quickly it was contained and put out."

Granite School District officials confirmed that classes at Olympus Junior High will be held as scheduled Friday.

Broken sprinkler causes 'waterfall' down front of SF building - March 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A broken sprinkler system at the top of an office building in San Francisco's Financial District sent water cascading down to the street below and drenching passersby Friday morning, according to fire officials.

A broken valve was reported at 9:27 a.m. at a building at Kearny and Market streets.

Justin Wheeler said he was working inside the T-Mobile store on Market Street Friday morning when he heard a commotion outside on the street.

So the St Louis native poked his curious head out the door, and saw an unusual deluge when he looked up.

"Gallons. Just a sheet of water, just pouring down," said Wheeler.

The manager at Hakkasan restaurant on the building's second floor said staff had seen the water falling, but said the flooding had not affected restaurant operations.

"It was a lot of water," said Alexandra Tejada, who works at the restaurant. "It was going on for about 15 minutes."

The San Francisco Fire Department was called and Truck 13 responded. Department spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said by the time firefighters got to the 12th floor a building employee had the water turned off.

Talmadge said it was a pipe from a sprinkler system that broke causing the massive waterfall onto the sidewalk down below.

The property manager of the building declined to comment. The building remained open to the businesses located inside the property.

Hatfield Wonderbra shop fire could have engulfed shopping centre, say fire chiefs - March 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    The Galleria

A fire in Hatfields Wonderbra shop could potentially have burned the Galleria Shopping Centre down but was thwarted by a sprinkler system.

Heat from the blaze activated the sprinkler, and it was quickly put out by firefighters.

Fire chiefs have lauded the system, which they say prevented disaster.

The drama unfolded at around 8pm last Friday.

Chief Fire Officer and Director of Community Protection Roy Wilsher said: The sprinkler quickly stopped the fire spreading and as a result firefighters were able to put out the fire quickly, safely and, crucially, before it caused any damage to the rest of the centre.

Richard Thake, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said: The cost of installing a sprinkler system is a fraction of the financial cost of a fire, which could ruin a small business.

Thats just one of the reasons why we want to see them installed on a much more regular basis than they are now.

Sprinkler system minimizes fire near Rancho Santa Fe, minimizes damage - March 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

On Tuesday, March 4, at 9:39 a.m., firefighters from the cities of Del Mar, San Diego, and Solana Beach and the Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District responded to the report of a structure fire in the 3000 block of Via De La Valle in Del Mar. Upon arrival they discovered that a fire in a back hallway of Sublime Tavern had been extinguished by one sprinkler head.

Fortunately, the fire protection system worked as it was designed to, said RSFFPD Battalion Chief Chris Galindo. The single sprinkler head provided the occupants with time to safely evacuate the building and kept the fire from spreading and causing further damage.

Three suites in the commercial building were affected and the total estimated damaged is $50,000. The cause is under investigation but appears to be accidental in nature.
