Where does GW outspend competitors? Not in academics or research, but student services - March 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Media Credit: Samuel Klein | Photo Editor

The University spent about $4,200 per student in 2012 on services that included the nearly 200,000 square foot Lerner Health and Wellness.

Walk through Colonial Crossroads on the Marvin Center's fifth floor and youll pass dozens of cubicles belonging to the staff of GWs residential life office, career center and community service programs.

Across the street in Rice Hall, youll see a half-dozen offices for the dean of students staff, and a few blocks over, you'll find a two-story multicultural center, a freshly updated international student office and a pristine gym. Soon, brand-new health and counseling centers will move to H Street after a multimillion dollar renovation.

Its easy to notice GWs big spending on student programming and services, though administrators have remained tight-lipped about most costs. But recent data from the Department of Education reveals a glimpse of GWs overall spending on student life, which increased about 40 percent between 2006 and 2012.

The University spent about $4,200 per student on services that included 4-Ride, Lerner Health and Wellness and Student Health Service in 2012, the latest data available.

Thats about $900 more than the average per-student spending at GWs 14 peer universities. Its the only category for which GW outspent those institutions, which include Northwestern, New York and Vanderbilt universities.

GW's spending on other areas like instruction, research and academic support have also seen double-digit increases over the last six years, but competitor schools still put much more money into those areas. For example, while GW spends $18,577 per student on instruction, its peers averaged $28,488 per student.

Dean of Student Affairs Peter Konwerski said the University has invested heavily to enrich students campus experiences, which is now an expectation for nearly all prospective students. He said the biggest cost is staff pay, which has become crucial to give students more personal attention and employ people experienced in higher education.

Students and parents are consumers and they're looking at the best value of their education, Konwerski said. We want to have a really compelling opportunity for students to come find their place, get support, be successful."

CedarCides Natural Pest Control Products Now Available at Sprinkler Warehouse - March 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Houston, TX (PRWEB) March 31, 2014

Sprinkler Warehouse, the largest online distributor of irrigation products in the US, has recently brought on a new line of pest control products by CedarCide in order to have a more extensive line of lawn care products.

CedarCide, located in Lewisville, TX, is a manufacturer of organic pesticides. Their line of eco-friendly products repel and kill common pests while not harming many beneficial insects like bees and butterflies. Their products range from one ounce spritzers for personal use to fifty five gallon drums of wood treatment for commercial uses. Some of the pests that CedarCide products protect against are scorpions, spiders, fleas, ticks, bed bugs and mosquitos.

In order to provide protection against the upcoming West Nile Virus threat, Sprinkler Warehouse decided that adding this line of products would complement their existing array of irrigation supplies. Sprinkler Warehouse also brought on a product called Skeetobusters, which injects CedarCides organic formula directly into an existing sprinkler system. This allows the dispersal of the pesticide automatically every time a homeowner runs the system. The innovative system can protect your lawn all yearlong with minimum initial setup.

One of the most popular of these new products is their Best Yet organic bug spray. This spray is great for homeowners to repel and kill the most common pests while not harming people, plants or animals. Their PCO formula is also very popular choice among professional pest control operators because of its non-toxic cedar oil ingredient that is a natural insect repellant.

Steve Okelberry, the owner of Sprinkler Warehouse, stated, We believe that our green-conscious customers will love this new line of products. Having an organic insect repellents that are safe to use directly on skin or, alternatively, hooking up to your sprinkler system is something were very excited about. All of these new products can be found by visiting the CedarCide section of their website or visiting their store in Northwest Houston, TX.

Burghley House: restoring the vision of Capability Brown - March 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

George London and Moses Cook had worked comprehensively at Burghley in the late 1600s and their extensive formal gardens and avenues can be seen around the house and the parkland. The parkland would most likely have been wood pastures at that time, used for grazing and timber. It was dissected by more than 20 radiating avenues and formal vistas. This type of axial formalism was predominant in Englands large Renaissance gardens, where designers such as London and Henry Wise drew inspiration from the formal French gardens of Andr Le Ntre, who designed the landscape for Versailles.

These gardens required colossal quantities of labour and this, no doubt, had a big influence on their removal.

Brown, having risen meteorically from being an apprentice/under-gardener at a modest estate, was renowned for his nature as God intended it style, which involved removing unsightly buildings (often including houses), formal gardens and arable fields to create his minimalist natural landscapes. His designs allowed for sporting pursuits and were easier to maintain.

At Burghley, Brown proved he was more than just a designer, solving the serious drainage issues in and around the house by creating the large serpentine lake, The New River, which now divides the Middle Park from the Lower Park adjacent to the house. These damp problems were due to a fault line that naturally occurs there where the blue clay and limestone meet. Browns proposals were typically radical.

All of the avenues except two (North Avenue and Queen Annes Avenue) were either clear-felled or had large chunks of them removed. The formal gardens around the house were swept away. Brown was also responsible for alterations to the house and other architectural elements.

Chatsworth: another of Brown's great gardens (ALAMY)

Looking at what he created today illustrates his genius and strengths in many fields aside from aesthetics. Browns knowledge of drainage and soil types was one of his outstanding attributes.

Peter Glassey, the current head of forestry, park and gardens at Burghley, says that several different tree species were used according to the local soil type, indicating an intimate knowledge of soils and what suits them. For instance, Brown planted oaks near the natural spring line (where the clay and limestone meet) where the soil is heavier; elsewhere sweet chestnut is used on the lighter, freer-draining soils with body.

Presumably Brown gleaned much of this knowledge from locals who worked with the land, knew areas intimately and had picked up information from their forebears. Brown also supervised the work. His success was due to his ability as a contractor in seeing the work through to its conclusion. Not only did he have shrewd observational powers and artistic skills but he was a great businessman and worked tremendously hard. He was skilled in planting, building dams and, of course, earth moving. Teams of his men would work to his designs.

Inevitably, sometimes things on site went wrong, with several commissions taking place at once in different parts of the country. But Browns repeated visits ensured that they were usually sorted out.

We need to stop illegal land clearing - March 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

PERAK Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir recently told a radio programme that 17,400ha of state land have been cleared illegally.

He said illegal land clearing had cost the state government millions in revenue. Although the problem is statewide, the activities are particularly prevalent in Batang Padang, Manjung and Perak Tengah districts.

The figure was based on initial findings by the state government. However, some believe that is not an actual picture of the situation, but merely the tip of the iceberg. A thorough investigation may reveal even more startling results.

Any discussion about illegal land clearing will always refer back to the massive mud flood in Sungai Bertam, Cameron Highlands, that killed three people.

It is without a doubt that illegal land-clearing activities and uncontrolled farming had led to the tragedy on Oct 23 last year. Sadly, three months after the incident, the farmers on the highlands were back to their old tricks.

Unlike Cameron Highlands, the culprits involved in illegal land clearing in Perak are believed to be members of syndicates.

The question which begs to be answered is whether any of the syndicates have been identified, let alone their masterminds nabbed?

How much longer will they be allowed to do as they wish before the law catches up with them?

A recent operation, dubbed Op Sahom, reportedly turned tense when authorities tried to clear an illegally cultivated land in Kampar.

There was a stand-off between the illegal farmers and the authorities, which led to the operation being called off following political intervention.

3 Ways to Create a More Spacious Kitchen - March 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Indianapolis, Indiana (PRWEB) March 31, 2014

What are 3 Kitchen Remodeling Ideas to Create More Spacious Homes?

Holly Denihan of DirectBuy of Indianapolis shared three ways to create a more spacious kitchen.

In an older homes, most of the rooms are closed off from each other. To make the current home have that "open concept" feel, consider walls to the kitchen that can be removed to open up to the family room, dining room or eating areas.

Bulkheads and Soffits were popular in older homes, but do take away from cabinet space and make the kitchen appear smaller. Consult a contractor in order to see if they can be removed to maximize your storage space with cabinets.

A third option would be to consider removing peninsula style kitchens and transforming it to an island for better flow and it will make it seem bigger.

DirectBuy of Indianapolis offers several services to get a higher quality of cabinetry for the same amount of money for the kitchen remodeling project that the big box stores offer at sale price.

One of the most valuable services that DirectBuy of Indianapolis offers is their in house kitchen designer, Holly Denihan. Holly has been with DirectBuy of Indianapolis for over seven years, helping members with kitchen designing. She has over 2,000 kitchen designs in her portfolio. She has also contributed 7 Steps to Kitchen Remodeling on the website KitchenRemodel101.com.

During the first meeting with Holly, a member will bring either the room dimensions or blueprints, their appliance model numbers and their budget.

Holly will give guidance in the cabinet layouts, choosing the door styles, as well as going over finish options and accessories. She will also go over the options for the countertops. Holly will then create a layout of the kitchen in the 20/20 computer software and provide a dimensional look of the new kitchen.
