Community speaks out against proposed nursing home closure - March 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

This section displays the last 50 news articles that were published.

GOUVERNEUR, N.Y. -- A possible closure of the Kinney Nursing Home could send residents far away from their homes and families. But with an outcry of community support, efforts are being made to keep the nursing home and its residents right here in Gouverneur.

"Can you imagine the fear to think that they might rip you out of your community and put you down in Long Island or down in Buffalo," asked Rev. Robert LaVeck.

That fear is becoming very real to the people of Kinney Nursing Home. St. Lawrence Health Systems has filed a plan to close the nursing home. The plan is currently under review by the state, but if approved, it would push residents out of Gouverneur.

LaVeck said, "We have these elderly people in the nursing home. There's nothing these people can do to defend themselves. We have to be their voice."

The community is rallying to keep the nursing home right where it is. However, they may be facing an uphill battle. The nursing home is losing patients and money. An aging group of baby boomers and increased healthcare costs make it difficult for nursing homes to turn a profit.

"With restrictions and limited Medicare and Medicaid funding, it becomes troublesome to try and get to a break even point," explained Mayor Ron McDougall.

The town and village have passed resolutions asking the state to reconsider closing the nursing home. However, county legislators say the people should find alternatives to keep a nursing home in Gouverneur.

"The bricks and mortar are there. Lets utilize them. Lets renovate it, a restoration project. Let's see if we can't find some money to support it," suggested Alex MacKinnon, a St. Lawrence County legislator.

Those ideas could keep a nursing home part of Gouverneur.

Malunnah to be restored to glory days

RELATED: Historic Devonport home Malunnah | photos

STATELY Devonport home Malunnah, built in 1888, has new owners after almost 10 years on the market, and is about to get a major facelift restoring it to former glory days.

The landmark property, at 1-3 Malunnah Close, is believed to have sold for an unconfirmed $1.2million two weeks ago.

Several years ago Malunnah was listed for $2.5million when waterfront property prices were inflated, and it failed to sell.

New owner Dennis Parker, a financial planner from Kiama, New South Wales, said he intends to refurbish the once grand Victorian homestead and eventually live in it.

Mr Parker said the builders would be going in to start work, but the restoration project could take a while.

Landscapers have already been at the site and truckloads of green waste taken away in readiness to start replicating the original garden design.

In old black and white photographs of the garden, it features box hedges and a gravel driveway.

Rabbitte: Cabinet did not know about recordings - March 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Thursday 27 March 2014 21.59

The Minister for Communicationshas said Cabinet ministers did not know about the emergence of information on recording phone callsin garda stations ahead of the contact between the Secretary General at the Department of Justice and the former garda commissioner on Monday.

It follows reports that the secretary general told former commissionerMartin Callinan, when he called to his home on Monday night, that there was disquiet at Cabinet level about the information given to the Taoiseach over the weekend by the Attorney General.

Speaking on RT's News At One, PatRabbitte rejected suggestions that there were differences of opinion around the Cabinet table before that contact.

Hesaid only Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Minister for Justice Alan Shatterwere aware at that stage about the information regarding the recordings.

He said the first he and the remaining Cabinet ministers knew about it was at the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday morning.

The ministersaid Tnaiste Eamon Gilmore first heard about it at a pre-Cabinet meeting that morning.

Asked about why it had taken so long for information about the recordings to get to the right people, Mr Rabbitte said information regarding a particular litigation file on the civil side had been the subject of discussions between people in the Attorney General's Office, people in the Department of Justice and An Garda Sochna.

However, he said there was no knowledge and clarity at that stage that the capturing of telephone exchanges was going on wider than in that particular case.

Mr Rabbitte said he would have expected that management in the force at a much lower level than the garda commissioner, including chief superintendents in the regions, must have known about the practice.

U.K. Treasury Hunts for Broadbent Replacement at BOE - March 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The U.K. Treasury began its search for a new member of the Bank of Englands rate-setting committee to replace Ben Broadbent, who will be promoted to be one of the deputy governors of the institution on July 1.

The government posted an advertisement on the Cabinet Office website for a candidate with strong and proven economics knowledge and skills and undisputed integrity. The appointee will start on July 1, before the July 9 and 10 policy meeting, the ad said.

The search for a new policy maker coincides with the biggest management shakeup since the central bank gained independence in 1997. Last week, Governor Mark Carney unveiled plans to create One Bank as the result of a strategy review by management consultants McKinsey & Co. As well as a swathe of internal promotions, Carney announced two new deputy governors, including Broadbent, who is currently an external member of the Monetary Policy Committee.

The appointment of external members to the MPC is designed to ensure that the committee benefits from thinking and expertise in addition to that gained inside the Bank of England, the ad said. Each member of the MPC has expertise in the field of economics and monetary policy. Members do not represent individual groups or areas. They are independent.

The position, which averages three days a week of work, pays 135,751 pounds ($225,500) a year. The closing date for applications is April 11 and interviews are expected to take place in London on April 29 or May 1, the ad said. The successful candidate is expected to be announced mid-May, it said.

Home Exterior Systems Are Now Carrying James Hardie Products - March 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Houston, TX (PRWEB) March 28, 2014

For over a century, James Hardie Industries Ltd. has been a top performer in the home improvement industry. The high-quality products from this Melbourne, Australia-based company have led to many home improvement companies around the globe stocking their products. Most recently, Home Exterior Systems, an award-winning company based in the Houston metropolitan area, announced that they will now carry James Hardie products.

Home Exterior Systems now provides James HardiePlank lap siding, which is widely considered the best of its kind in the market. Consisting of a long, narrow board with one edge thicker than the other, lap siding covers the outer walls to protect buildings from the elements. The boards, which overlap each other horizontally, are manufactured with sealer and primer. This makes the lap siding resistant to insects, rotting, peeling, cracking and fading. Also, HardiePlank is thicker and has more texture than the average lap siding.

Also availableand especially useful for sidewall applicationsis HardieShingle siding. While HardiePlank lap siding consists of long wood planks, HardieShingle consists of wood shingles, which are less expensive both to apply and to maintain. Combined with the durability of fiber-cement, HardieShingle upholds the company tradition of low-maintenance products. For smaller coverage areas, Home Exterior Services provides a variety of widths. Larger applications might be better suited with decorative edges for quicker installation.

HardiePlank is available in finishes like Colonial Roughsawn, Select Cedarmill, Rustic Cedar and Beaded Cedarmill. HardieShingle customers can choose the Individual Shingles, Straight-Edge Notched Panel, Staggered-Edge Notched Panel or the Half-Round Notched Panel.
