LAS VEGAS -- Nightclub operator Victor Drai considered the roof of the former Barbary Coast and Bills Gamblin Hall & Saloon untapped potential.

Drai, 66, a Los Angeles-based nightlife mogul, operated Drais After Hours in the basement of the small Strip casino. On New Years Eve he would venture to the roof of the 11-story property to watch the annual fireworks show.

It was the best view from here looking up and down the Strip, Drai said of the property at the northeast corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road.

I knew this for years. I always had a vision in my head, Drai said.

Now, that vision is taking shape.

A Memorial Day weekend opening is planned for Drais Beachclub and Nightclub a 65,000-square-foot rooftop nightclub, day club and pool deck designed by Drai that sits atop The Cromwell, after a $185 million remodeling of the building.

Drai spent Friday afternoon touring the site, which overlooks the Strip. The spacious nightclub adds three floors to the hotel-casino and opens up onto the pool area, which also has a dance stage set aside for a DJ.

At first, Drai was only able to present renderings of the project. He initially brought a ladder to roof and had Caesars Entertainment Corp. executives and property officials to see what the view would be from a platform.

Now, with the pool area and adjoining spas taking shape, along with 24 private cabanas and an upper-level for European-style sun bathing deck, Drai said the space is even more spectacular that he originally visioned.

I think its the most beautiful space and I hope it will be the best location we have ever built, Drai said.

Fla. man arrested in Sac City murder case - March 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SAC CITY, Iowa | Family members of a Sac City, Iowa, man killed in 2009 are thankful a man suspected in his death has been arrested.

Mark Koster, 58, was found dead in his basement in November 2012. Authorities said Wednesday they believe his friend, John David Green, 54, killed him in 2009 and hid his body in the house.

Green was arrested Tuesday at a dog racetrack in Orange Park, Fla., on afelony charge of first-degree murder.

Were grateful, said Kosters sister Nancy Teasdale, of Edina, Minn., when contacted by the Journal.

State and local police began searching for Green after Kosters body was found hidden in the basement of his home in 2012.

Koster's family reported him missing from Sac City in 2010. He was believed to have left the Sac City area in 2009, and his family was concerned because they hadn't heard from him for several months.

He was declared legally dead in 2011. His house on North Fifth Street was sold in May 2012.

The new homeowner found Koster's remains while remodeling the basement in November 2012.

At the time of the discovery, officials believed they were looking for a friend of Koster's named Tom. Investigators later learned Tomwas an alias Green used, said Mitch Mortvedt, resident agent-in-charge for the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

The search for Green led investigators to Kansas City and, eventually, to the city of Orange Park, just south of Jacksonville, Fla. Policeagencies in North Carolina, Georgia and Florida also assisted with the search.

Philips unveils sensor-ready system for connected office lighting - March 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    14 hours ago Mar. 26, 2014 - 4:00 PM PDT

Weve already seen Philipss clever indoor lighting platform that acts as a fine-grained indoor location-tracking system for shops, but now the Dutch conglomerate is preparing to unveil something for the office.

Next week at the Light + Building show in Frankfurt, Germany, Philips will take the wraps off its connected office lighting system. The LED light fixtures are all hooked up to the buildings IT network through their wiring its Power-over-Ethernet (PoE), which provides just enough juice for low-power LEDs and can also include sensors for monitoring humidity and temperature, as well as for judging when a room is occupied or not.

As with the in-store system, the lights can also act as a positioning grid to help people navigate the office layout. By communicating with a smartphone app using light, the fixtures could tell where the user is and help recommend the nearest vacant meeting room, for example. Users could also easily adjust the lighting and temperature of the room theyre in, via the app.

The real pitch here is for building owners and facility managers. By measuring occupancy levels and energy usage, and displaying the results through Philipss software, the system would make it easier to figure out when to heat certain areas, how often specific rooms need cleaning, and of course what should be lit at certain times of day.

Its gathering a large database of information for various fixtures for facility managers, to make their life easier, Philips spokesman Menno Kleingeld told me.

Philips isnt the first company to unveil such a system. Notably, Redwood Systems, bought last year by CommScope, also supplies a package that combines LEDs with Ethernet-style cables for environmental monitoring and centralized building control.

However, Redwoods system does not hew to the PoE specification. Kleingeld was adamant that Philipss system sticks to open standards, cutting down on cost and avoiding potential lock-in. That said, certain features will only work with Philipss software. Part of where we believe we can play an extended role is by offering user apps and facility management tools, he said.

Philips already has a showcase customer for its system in consultancy giant Deloitte, whose new Amsterdam office (currently under construction) incorporates it. We see our office raising the bar in data analytics with completely new insights in the use of office space, leading the way for offices to reduce the CO2 footprint of buildings and create a more sustainable world, Deloitte Netherlands CIO Erik Ubels said in a statement.

Regarding security, Kleingeld told me that all the data generated by the lighting system would by default stay in the customers own IT network. Being wired rather than wireless, its also harder to snoop on.

Can mid-power LEDs compete in the mass lighting market? - March 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    March 26, 2014 // Paul Buckley

Philips Lumileds, which has often been more associated with the high power LED market, is now resolving to take mid-power LEDs to another level in 2014 and this March the company shown its hand with a number of product releases.

The companys mid-power LED products are already used in large volumes in the automotive lighting market but now Philips Lumileds is predicting that 2014 will see the mid-power LED market continue to maintain high growth, especially in general lighting and indoor lighting markets including the retrofit bulb, down light and troffer sectors.

The LUXEON 3020 emitter crosses the 1,000 lumens per dollar threshold and is aimed at encouraging even greater adoption of LED based lighting. Philips Lumileds is looking for the affordable LED solution to drive a variety of long-awaited commercial LED lighting fixtures into the mass market, including lamps and troffers.

The LUXEON 3020 is the most affordable of all our mid-power LEDs, delivering over 1,000 lumens per dollar. This product will inspire the market with the next generation of high quality, efficient and attractively priced LED lamps, said Orson Lo, Product Manager, Philips Lumileds.
