FAIRMONT Because of a great willingness to work and teamwork among the contractor and local subcontractors, the West Virginia State Office Complex on Adams Street in Fairmont is right on track, according to Ned Luthy, project architect and principal with Omni Associates.
Theyre all just willing to jump in and get it done, Luthy said. Every subcontractor thats on the project is engaged.
Coordinating subcontractors can get complicated. Thats why Luthy said they spent extra time early on in the project setting a plan in place.
We did a lot of that effort, and I think were reaping that benefit now, Luthy said.
Luthy said that part of what makes working with the local subcontractors work so well is the people themselves.
Theyre working together because theyre West Virginia people, Luthy said. They have a lot of pride in their craft, and in getting the job done.
Among both the contractor and the subcontractors, Luthy said the workers have a lot of pride in their work.
Theres certainly something that drives everybody thats beyond the contract, Luthy said. Theyre getting it done above and beyond that across the board.
Luthy said that this stage in the project is the heaviest for the billing cycles.
Weve got construction going on, a large crane on Adams Street and on Quincy. Weve got exterior construction and a tremendous amount of interior construction, and were taking advantage of the weather, Luthy said.

Clean windows are important for a positive outlook. Or something like that.
      Published June 18, 2014 at 5:21 p.m.
Thomas Ellis has been a window washer for 45 years. His father owned a window cleaning business in Milwaukee called Dons Window Cleaning where he started working at the age of 14.
"Back then, wed just hang over the side of a building and wash the windows," says Ellis. "Theres a lot more to it these days. And its a lot safer."
Since 2002, Ellis has run operations at Als Window Cleaning, the company that routinely washes the windows of the U.S. Bank Center, which with 42 floors and at 601 feet is the tallest building in the state.
Ellis and his team clean the windows of the first two floors of the building located at 777 E. Wisconsin Ave. every other month. They wash all of the windows twice a year in the summer and in the late fall. It takes three full weeks of work for two washers to clean all of the windows on all four sides of the building.
The washers are able to access the windows through a sky climber and a "stage," both of which are stored in a garage thats on top of the building.
They dont go out in rain or high winds. Occasionally, however, they get caught in bad weather halfway through a job which can get a little dicey. However, Ellis says he always keeps his cool.
But does he ever get vertigo?
"No, not me," he says. "Most people would have white knuckles. Its not a job for everyone."

Windex is known for its window cleaning abilities, but Household Hacker says you can use it to remove tough clothing stains too if youre out of your regular stain remover.
Grab your stained clothing item and spray the stain with Windex until the area is saturated. Let it rest for about 15 minutes, toss the item in the washing machine with a regular load, and you should be good to go!
Make sure youre strictly using the regular blue Windex. The other types have not been tested and theres no telling what may happen to your clothes!

Appliances: To keep your stove top clean and shining, use a good car cleaner wax on the painted surface around the stove eyes. Just apply as you would to your automobile. Clean up is a breeze after the heaviest cooking. This can also be used to clean the fronts of most appliances -- except for stainless steel. (Rick Wright, Tennessee)
Baby Bottles: To clean milk residue out of baby bottles, put a tablespoon of raw rice, one drop of dish washing liquid and hot water in the bottle. Fill the bottle up half way with hot water and shake it up for about 2-3 minutes. Of course this is only done after the sterilizing of bottles stage is over. Tavish Graves, LA
Baking Dishes/Pans: To remove burnt-on food from baking dishes/pans, place a dryer sheet in the bottom and fill with hot water. Wait about a 1/2 hour and it should wipe clean. May have to be repeated if really messy. Debbie Horhay, NJ
Burnt Food on Pans: Use baking soda, dish washing powder, and hot water. Then use a scrub brush. Yvette Washington, TX
Burnt Food: Place an unused dryer softener sheet into your cooking vessel that has dried or burnt on food. Add hot water soak overnight....WORKS GREAT!!! Sharon Golconda, Il
To clean pots and pans with burnt-on food, add little water to pot and put on warm burner on stove and after a few minutes scrape off. This also works on cast iron pans-just wipe on oil after has dried. Karen Espey
Clogged Drains: For slow moving drains, such as kitchen sink slowed by grease, pour one bottle of hydrogen peroxide, let sit for 10 or 15 minutes. For real slow drains, you may need to use 2 bottles. Helen Riggan, VA
Coffee Cup: I have found that using a baking soda paste gets rid of coffee, and tea stainless in my coffee cups. Teresa Smith, OH
Coffee Pot: Forgot and left the glass coffee pot on the heating element and now you have burnt coffee in the bottom of your pot? Simple! Just put crushed ice in the pot along with some salt and swish it around. Rebecca Berry Guinn, TN
If you burn your coffee pot let cool off and then add salt and ice water to it. Stir around for a few minutes and as the ice melts the burned coffee will come off. P. France, OH

BLADEN COUNTY, N.C.- Smithfields pork processing plant in Bladen County is closed indefinitely after company officials say a water heater tank fell over and severed an ammonia line at the massive hog slaughtering plant Tuesday.
The incident forced around 2,400 employees to evacuate and sent several people to area hospitals to be evaluated.
The facility is located on Highway 87 North in Tar Heel. During the evacuation, workers were transported to Tar Heel Middle School where they were given food and water. The employees have since boarded buses to return to the plant and collect personal items.
"At first I did not know what it was, I thought it was hot water. [Then I smelled] that ammonia. And I have asthma so it was really kind of scary," said worker Timothy Hayes.
Plant workers said the incident was chaotic when it first began.
"With people running out of the plant, we did not know what was going on at first. Until later on we got to the plant and we smelled ammonia. They had everybody outside and were talking about going down to the clinic," said Devin Autry, plant worker.
Emergency crews from in and outside the surrounding area brought in resources to help.
"We made contact with local Hazmat officials and worked with folks from Duplin County, Fayetteville from Tar Heel all came to assist to make sure there was no particular problem for the entire community, said Dennis Pittman, with Smithfield corporate communications.
This is not the first time there's been an ammonia leak at this plant. But officials say people should not be concerned about safety.
