In what's been a busy month for architectural competitions, the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has revealed its Manser Medal longlist. Since 2001, the Manser Medal has been awarded annually to RIBA's favorite new UK-based house or extension. The shortlist will be announced September 4, and the overall winner declared during RIBA's Stirling Prize ceremony, on October 16.
Last year's Manser Medal winner was the Slip House, by Carl Turner Architects, and this year's crop is no less impressive, with 28 new homes hailing from England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland making the grade. Here's our pick of the five standout designs.
6a Architects extended this London-based home in order to offer its disabled occupant more mobility, as the original home was very difficult to navigate by wheelchair.
The firm designed a simple single-story extension that makes each of the public rooms and the principal bedroom in the main house easily accessible. Sporting low ceilings and a minimal footprint, it takes its place alongside the listed home uncommonly well for a modern extension.
Based in the Gower peninsula, within one of Wales' five officially-designated areas of outstanding beauty, Stormy Castle also rests close to the remains of an ancient Celtic hill fort.
The modern residence blends nicely into the ancient landscape, thanks in part to Loyn and Co's decision to retain and integrate an old barn and school house that already lay on the site. The home is also partly sunken into the ground and features sustainable technology in the form of photovoltaic solar panels, ground source heat pump and rainwater harvesting.
The Treetops project saw Howarth Litchfield Partnership renovate an existing and rather tired-looking two story detached house in North East England which dates back to 1964, into a modern and energy-efficient home for an architect and his wife.
Located atop a steep hill, the house was completely transformed in appearance and given new insulation, energy-efficient windows, and sustainable tech such as ground source heating and solar panels. Thanks to its modern makeover, the house now operates off-the-grid.
Situated on the Isle of Tiree, which is the most westerly of Scotland's Inner Hebrides islands, House Number 7 is the result of an overhaul of an old stone cottage plus the addition of two large extensions.
The original cottage now serves as a guest house, while the large extension is the main home. The extension looks a little like a modern agricultural shed, or similar industrial unit, and could very easily have clashed horribly with the existing cottage. However, Denizen Works managed to pull it off and has enjoyed admiring words from critics since, making House Number 7 a strong contender to win later this year.

RIBA's Manser Medal highlights the best new British homes
When the city of McCall's Planning and Zoning commission convenes this coming Tuesday, July 1, they'll be asked to consider a proposed construction project that would include condominiums, a restaurant and new retail spacea proposal that the McCall Star-News reports is the largest of its kind in seven years.
It's being called The Village on Lake Street and would include three buildings on 1.73 acres, with 27 condominiums interspersed among the three structures, along with a mix of retail, restaurant and office space.
McCall officials told the Star-News that the proposal was the largest since 2007 and could readily be compared to Alpine Village, just south of McCall's downtown.
Six existing homes, currently used as rental housing, would be removed from the Lake Street parcel of land if the project is approved. But the Star-News reports that before any of that could happen, the land would need to be rezoned from its current limit of eight homes per acre up to 16 homes per acre. The proposal would also see a strip of public land running through the parcel converted into a bicycle and pedestrian pathway.

New Condo, Retail, Restaurant Project Proposed for McCall
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. When Carol OKeefes husband, Dennis, died from cancer in 2008, she decided it was time to relocate from the Boston area. She was an office manager with Staples, according to the Winston-Salem Journal.
I asked my (financial) advisor one day if he thought I could retire. He said I was in good shape financially and there wouldnt be any problem, OKeefe said.
Since Dennis and Carol had no children, it seemed like a good idea for Carol to move closer to family. That family was John Farmer, her brother, and Kristin Farmer, her sister-in-law, who have a home and organ-restoration company on six acres on Fraternity Church Road.
The company has been featured for its work restoring the Hook & Hastings Organ at St. Timothys Episcopal Church in Winston Salem. The inaugural recital will be in November.
I thought I would buy some land nearby and build a home over there, said OKeefe, pointing to the east side of the home. But John told her that he would rather walk downstairs to pick her up than roll down the hill in a wheel chair to help her.
The siblings have lot in common including a sense of humor and the same birth date, Jan. 4. John is 64 and Carol is 69.
So Carol lives in the lower level of the Farmer home. She worked with the John, Kristin and the contractor, Lawrence Cline, to re-imagine the area. Stored organ pipes had to be moved to a barn.
Some plumbing had already been installed in the lower level. John had been thinking of inviting his mother, Mildred, who had Alzheimers, to stay with them. But she died in 2001. When Carol moved to North Carolina in 2011, she stayed upstairs with the Farmers while the remodel was designed and executed.
She worked with the plumbing that was already in place. She has a large walk-in shower and no bathtub. I dont take baths, Carol said.
She has an office with built-in bookshelves and a computer set-up with a half curtain covering utility boxes. In one corner of her lower-level home she has curtained off an unfinished area for storage and a work space for her bead-jewelry hobby.
