Pastors serve God full time while working second job - June 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Jesus was a carpenter. His disciples were fishermen. Even Moses made a living as a shepherd.

Just like in biblical times, many church leaders today are holding down second jobs.

Its becoming a cultural norm, said Gabe Dodd, lead pastor of The Branch Church in Dahlonega. When I started in ministry in 2008, I didnt know of anybody (who) was doing bivocational stuff. But today its kind of normal.

Dodd works part time, about three days a week, at a Starbucks in Cumming. He works at least two days at the church and keeps Saturdays open for his family.

Trying to keep a balance, with all three different aspects happy, can be a little bit difficult, Dodd said. There are a lot of times when I go to bed feeling like I should have done more for family time or church time. Or people are asking me to pick up shifts at Starbucks.

Dodd said while hes heard a lot of pastors predict bivocational ministry will become the way churches are run in the future, hes not exactly sold on the idea for himself.

Its just funny that books are being written about it now and theres conferences where they talk about it and some pastors are pushing this is the way to go, Dodd said. But Im one of those guys where Ill do it for a season, but this is not the way I want to do it for the rest of my life.

Scott Waters, pastor of Victory Baptist Church in Gainesville, had to return to bivocational life after a period of working full time in the church. He now works full time selling nuts and bolts for House of Threads in Gainesville as well as serving the Gainesville church. He focuses on studying Scripture and spending time with his family after his work day is completed.

I believe that being a bivocational pastor keeps me in touch with things that your church members go through on a day-to-day basis, Waters said. Keeps me in touch with what its like to work and serve God, too. It has its advantages, but its a little tiresome sometimes.

While Waters doesnt hesitate to admit there are daily challenges of balancing his multiple roles, he sees the opportunities for ministry.

Getting the best deal on home appliances - June 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

(June 19, 2014) Americans spend a lot of money on home appliances and electronics$3,000 on average.

That total doesnt even include air conditioning or furnaces! So, when buying a new appliance, it pays to get the best deals.

One way to do that is to go with what you know and what you can trust. That applies to the product and the company that makes it.

I bought my refrigerator about 45 years ago, and I have never had a repair on it! Its a Whirlpool product, and I love it, said Donna Mobley.

Donna shops at h.h. gregg on 96th street in Indianapolis. And despite giving them an A+ rating, she still is a very careful shopper. Right now, shes looking for a washer. Her Whirlpool refrigeratorwhich again is nearly a half-century oldis still going strong.

Her advice is simple, but a lot of people dont do it.

I think it depends on what your pocketbook can afford, what kind of laundry you have to do and how much youre going to use it, she said. If youve got a lot of kids, I say buy a lesser model without all the bells and whistles. If you can afford it, then more is fine.

The people we spoke with at h.h. gregg agree with Donna. They also say you shouldnt let any sales person push you into a product you dont want or need.

We qualify people to their needs. For example, if youre buying a refrigerator and a customer stocks it with pizzas, they really have no need for a fridge with a massive amount of cubic feet. Thats just a waste of money, said Kyle Schroeder, a general manager at h.h. gregg.

If youre outfitting your home, try buying all of your appliances at one place. Sometimes youll get a bundled deal, just like cable companies offer when you combine TV, phone and internet service. Dont be afraid to negotiate. While some places have set prices, others have wiggle room or simply guarantee the lowest price.

Fire destroys Vancouver apartment building project - June 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Fire destroyed an apartment building with about 90 units that was under construction in Vancouver.

The fire broke out about 3:30 a.m. Friday and went to two-alarms as it brought the four-story structure to the ground.

Fire Marshal Heidi Scarpelli told KOIN (http://bit.ly/1w2JApM ) flames forced firefighters to take a "defensive approach," pouring on water from outside.

Natural gas helped fuel the flames until a utility crew shut off the line.

    There are no reported injuries.

Scarpelli says investigators looking for the cause of the fire will likely bring in a dog trained to detect any accelerants. She also says investigators may ask for assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Witnesses told KATU (http://bit.ly/1lb1zHl ) they heard an explosion and saw the sky turned orange.
