Guests might see some Pardon our appearance signs at the TD Garden over the next several months, but the ongoing $70 million renovations at the arena look like theyll make for a recharged fan experience.
The renovations were announced earlier this year and detailed today by Garden officials at a tour for members of the media. While much of the work being done will indeed leave a visual marka new pro shop, new food setups, and a redesigned concourse among themthe biggest change might not be visible.
Delaware North Companies, which owns and operates the Garden, is installing 400 antennas to facilitate a high-density Wi-Fi network for fans. The system will be powered by Cisco.
Garden President Amy Latimer said slow Internet connections in the Garden have been a common complaint of patrons, who say processes like sending emails and posting to social media sites can sometimes be interrupted in the crowded venue.
Gillette Stadium currently offers its own Wi-Fi network, while Fenway Park hopes to offer a public-facing Wi-Fi network by the start of the 2015 season, according to Red Sox Vice President of IT Brian Shield. (Red Sox Principal Owner John Henry also owns Boston.com and The Boston Globe.)
The antennas at the Garden will be installed throughout the arena, including in ceilings. The Garden is also exploring installing antennas within the arenas hockey boards.
The renovations will bring new looks to the second, fourth, and seventh floors. The second floor will host a new pro shop. Previously, the pro shop had been located on the first floor. The new shop will be about 6,000 square feet, which Latimer said will about double its size. The second floor location will also allow fans who are already at an event to visit the shop during it. The previous shops location required fans to leave their ticketed event in order to visit.
Just for kicks, heres the Bruins bear in a hard hat in what will eventually become the pro shop.
The fourth and seventh floor concourses will receive new flooring, and LED screens will be installed on the walls, which can show photos uploaded by fans to social media through the new wireless network. Other digital signs will show sponsor messages. Images of sports stars from the past will also adorn the walls.

This article, including a sidebar on the latest innovations in floor markings, originally appeared in the June print issue of IMPO.
According to OSHA, slips, trips and falls constitute the majority of general industry accidents. They cause 15 percent of all accidental deaths, and are second only to motor vehicles as a cause of fatalities.
But just because flooring is constantly underfoot doesnt mean its also constantly top-of-mind. Many people give little thought to the flooring they work and walk on each day until an injury happens, says Chuck Haun, Director of Field Sales & Technology, Milamar Coatings, L.L.C., a company that specializes in the formulation and distribution of high performance adhesives and coatings. And while there are a variety of conditions that affect the friction on floors surfaces, says Haun spills being a major culprit the wrong floor type or coating can lead to defective flooring surfaces as well.
Construction Project
Concrete floors are ubiquitous in manufacturing facilities, but cracks, holes and deteriorated joints can compromise the safety of a facility. According to Wade Christensen, vice president of Niagara Machine, provider of industrial surface preparation equipment, many people fail to notice the hazards created by floors because their safety focus tends to be more on equipment. But oftentimes in the case of flooring, equipment damage is not the only consideration.
A spalled joint, one where the edges of the joint have started to break, not only can damage forklifts, but repeated heavy equipment traffic can actually worsen the problem, adds Niagaras Mike Trotta. But Trotta also points out additional problems created by concrete floor imperfections. Many facility managers are aware of the trip hazards created by cracks and holes in concrete floors. The problem is they fail to notice bacteria and dirt containment points that these flaws create. These collection points are a problem for any facility as they can collect dirt compromising cleanliness and production processes.

Feet First: Best Practices To Ensure Safe Flooring
SCOTTSDALE, AZ (CBS5) -
A raging fire that destroyed the showroom of a south Scottsdale car dealership early Tuesday morning started inan unoccupied attic area above a hallway and bathrooms, fire investigators said.
The first-alarm fire began shortly after 12:30 a.m. at Mark Kia,1000 N. Scottsdale Rd., near the city's border with Tempe. The remodeled building was in the final stages of construction after a year of remodeling.
It will still be some time before the actual cause of the accidental fire is determined. Scottsdale fire personnel and the insurance investigators are working through the process of examining the damaged equipment and rubble of the collapsed area.
Mark Kia general manager JoshSpencer said there were no cars in the showroom, which passed its fire inspection Monday, and no cars damaged in the lots. He said they had planned to move the cars into the showroom Tuesday morning.
The building had not yet been cleared for a final Certificate of Occupancy by the Scottsdale Building and Fire Departments.
Spencer said the dealership had spent about $500,000 to $1 million on the year-long remodel leading up to Tuesday's "move-in date."
Damage estimates are placed between$800,000 to $1 million.
Scottsdale Fire Chief Tom Shannon said the fire inspectors check fire extinguishers, exits and some other items, and that the attic would be an electrical, mechanicalor air-conditioning inspection.
The fireburned throughthe main plastic pipe that fed the dealership'sfire sprinkler system, a typical event in a fire of this nature, the spokesman said.
