NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Shares of building materials maker Owens Corning (OC)are falling after the company cut its guidance for its full-year 2014 earnings before interest and taxes.
WHAT'S NEW: Owens Corning reduced its FY14 EBIT outlook to $416M from $500M as well as slashed its roofing volumes guidance for the first half of this year to be 20% lower than volumes in the same period of last year. The company expects to recover a portion of this volume shortfall in the second half of the year, but noted that continued weakness in the second quarter has introduced further uncertainty in the FY14 financial outlook for the company's roofing business. The company continues to see improvement in the year-over-year performance of both its insulation and composites businesses. Earnings growth in these two businesses is expected to more than offset the weaker financial performance in the roofing business year-over-year, Owens Corning noted.
WHAT'S NOTABLE: Three days ago, Goldman upgraded the building products sector to Attractive from Neutral based on reduced expectations and accelerating U.S. macroeconomic conditions. The firm said that non-residential construction is at an inflection and it expects existing homes sales growth to increase. As part of the sector change, the firm upgraded Armstrong World (AWI)to Conviction Buy from Buy and downgraded Ply Gem (PGEM)to Sell from Neutral.
OTHERS TO WATCH: Others in the building materials space include Masco Corporation (MAS), Beacon Roofing Supply (BECN)and Louisiana-Pacific (LPX).
PRICE ACTION: During morning trading, shares of Owens Corning fell $1.90 or 4.6%, to $39.40. Meanwhile, Masco was down 1.8% and Beacon Roofing Supply was down 3.6%.

Experienced Roofing Expert Flatroofservices.co.uk To Slash 20% Off Its Current Rates In The Coming Months
Owens Corning (OC) cut its earnings guidance for the full year amid continued weakness at the companys roofing business.
The maker of residential and commercial building products said Friday the weakness in roofing volumes seen during the first quarter dragged on into April and May. Roofing volumes may fall as much as 20% year-over-year in the first half of 2014, but Owens Corning anticipates recovering a portion of the volume shortfall in the second half.
Owens Corning now expects 2014 adjusted earnings before interest and taxes to merely surpass the prior years $416 million. The company previously forecasted EBIT of $500 million.
Shares dropped 6.1% to $38.78 in recent trading. The stock had been up 1.4% on the year through Thursdays close.
Owens Corning, one of the largest producers of fiberglass materials, is coming off a strong year in which its insulation business returned to profitability. The company projected continued improvement in 2014, citing an uptick in construction activity.
Along with its fourth-quarter earnings report, Owens Corning unveiled its first dividend since 2000.
On Friday, Owens Corning reiterated its forecast for year-over-year improvement in insulation and composites. Earnings growth in those two businesses is expected to more than offset weaker results from roofing.
The Toledo, Ohio-based company is scheduled to report second-quarter results on July 23 prior to the opening bell.

Owens Corning Dampens 2014 Outlook
June 21, 2014 - International League (IL) Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders Moosic, Pa. -A slew of sparkling new additions to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders' (Triple-A/New York Yankees) roster helped anchor a combined six-hit 4-0 shutout win over the Pawtucket Red Sox (Boston Red Sox) Saturday night at PNC Field. 40-man member Bryan Mitchell received his first Triple-A start, dancing around four scoreless frames while fellow newby Taylor Dugas notched his first hit as a RailRider en route to a two RBI night at the plate.
Matt Barns tossed a 1-2-3 first before running into a bugaboo of trouble in the second. Three hits by Scott Sizemore, Zelous Wheeler and Rob Refsnyder loaded the bases before Barns issued a walk to Corban Joseph to bring about the game's first run. The crooked number was hung after Dugas' first RBI, a groundball to second, that made the affair 2-0 in favor of the local nine.
A four-hit fourth marked the final offensive charge for SWB as Dugas and Jose Pirela collected back-to-back run-scoring hits that thrust the advantage to the contest's final ledger of 4-0. Mitchell yielded three hits before handing the baton to Francisco Rondon (1-0) who twirled a sparkling 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball in the win. Matt Daley and Robert Coello piggybacked off Rondon to secure the final score of 4-0 and snap the RailRiders' three-game losing streak.
The RailRiders will look to build off Saturday night's win as they continue the series with the Pawtucket Red Sox Sunday, June 22 with day baseball at 1:05 p.m. The RailRiders will toss the right-hander Shane Greene (4-2, 5.77) while the Red Sox call upon the right-hander Allen Webster (3-4, 2.94). John Sadak and Aaron Berlin will have the call on radio with the pregame show beginning at 12:35 p.m. on NEPA Sports Radio -The GAME, Northeast PA's largest radio network: 100.7 FM, 1340 WYCK-AM, 1400 WICK-AM, 1440 WCDL-AM and 106.7 FM. For season ticket information, single-game tickets or to book a ballpark group outing, call (570) 969-BALL (2255) or visit swbrailirders.com. OFF THE RAILS:
Saturday's night win snapped a three-game losing for the RailRiders while aslo avoiding dropping SWB to a season-worst six-games under .500.
Mookie Betts swiped second base in the second frame off SWB catcher John Ryan Murphy. The RailRiders have allowed their opponents to successfully swipe a bag in each of their last 15 attempts. The RailRiders have nabbed just 21 of 100 (.210) would-be base stealers this season. No other IL team has had more stolen base attempts or successes against it than SWB.
Rob Refsnyder collected three more base hits Saturday night to raise his season-long contact clip with SWB to .293. Refsnyder has now collected a hit six of his last seven games, including three multi-hit affairs. During the run of success the RailRiders' usual second baseman is 10-for-25 (.400).
Saturday night's combined shutout of Pawtucket marked the RailRiders' fifth shutout victory of the season, with the last such win a 2-0 triumph over the Rochester Red Wings May 24. SWB is now 5-5 in shutouts this campaign.
