Edward Lawrence Franko, 84, of Wind Ridge, died at 1:15 a.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at home.
He was born Thursday, January 9, 1930 in Canonsburg, a son of the late Albert L. Franko and Anna Petrous Franko.
Mr. Franko's Baptism was at the St. Patricks Church in Canonsburg. He was a graduate of Canonsburg High School class of 1948. He was a Veteran of the Korean War having served with the U.S. Marines. He was 1 of 3 of the first coaches of Wind Ridge Little League Baseball and T-Ball. He was a member of the Aleppo and State Grange. Mr. Franko was an avid hunter and pool shooter having belonged to 2 leagues in Waynesburg. He owned and operated Empire Service as an Appliance Repair Tech from 1964 to 1992.
He is survived by his wife Shirley Cox Franko, whom he married on May 18, 1978 in Lancaster City, Pennsylvania.
Also surviving are eight children, Ruth Ann (Ronald) Jacobs, of New Freeport, George E. Franko, of Wheeling, West Virginia, Richard D.(Melissa) Franko, of Twin Rocks, Pennsylvania, Amy L.(Terrie) Johnson, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Heather Cox, of Wind Ridge, Renee (Thomas) McConnell, of Washington, Sandy ( and the late William) House, of Little Mountain, South Carolina and Michael Franko, of Bridgeville; fifteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren; two sisters, Elizabeth Markovich, of Catawba, North Carolina and Joyce Franko, of Canonsburg; two brothers, William (Gerrie) Franko, of Westland, Michigan and Jerome (Cathy) Franko, of Buffalo, New York and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are one sister, Judy Carroll and one brother, Albert Franko.
Friends will be received from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. the time of the Prayer Service on Friday, June 20, 2014 in the Milliken and Throckmorton Funeral Home, Inc., Daryl L. Throckmorton, Owner/Director, 197 N. Maiden St., Waynesburg, with Father Richard J. Thompson as Celebrant. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurrary. SAN DIEGO Exploding vapors from a bathtub refinishing project caused the fire Saturday in a two-story, 28-unit apartment building on Point Loma that sent three people to a hospital for treatment, firefighters said Sunday.
The Chatsworth Boulevard apartment fire was caused by ignitable vapors, said San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesman Lee Swanson. The bathtub was being refinished and vapors were ignited by electrical equipment used by the refinisher. He was taken to the hospital with burns.
Swanson said a San Diego police officer suffered from smoke inhalation and was hospitalized. Another woman in the apartment complex was also taken to a hospital for treatment after complaining of dizziness and shortness of breath.
The police officer was released from the hospital after being treated, San Diego Police officer Dan Lasher said.
A total of 60 firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire and took about 20 minutes to knock it down, Swanson said.
The Red Cross assisted 20 to 25 people displaced by the fire to find temporary housing.
