It's an old joke, but Al Thurmes laughs anyway.
"This job? It sucks," he said, over the roar of his vacuum-cleaning truck slurping the sewage out of a septic tank.
That describes the future of his business in Lake Elmo, too, because the city of 8,000 is installing its first sewer lines. Instead of calling on guys like Thurmes to clean septic tanks, thousands of customers soon will be flushing into new city sewers.
"We are going to lose business," said Thurmes, as he pulled out the hose and loaded it back on the truck.
The sewerizing of Lake Elmo is one phase of Minnesota's long-running battle with failing septic systems. Officials are increasingly persuading owners to replace or fix their septic systems, using incentives and low-interest loan programs.
Septic systems can be environmental time bombs.
According to Lana Meyer, owner of Meyer Sewer Service Inc. in Afton, septic systems cost $6,000 to $14,000 to replace.
The systems flow sewage into a septic tank, which retains most of the solids. The overflow runs into a network of perforated underground pipes, where it is naturally cleaned as it seeps into the ground.
But without maintenance, the pipes get clogged and wastewater backs up, eventually forming puddles on the ground.
"Then it is an imminent health threat," said Jeff Travis, a manager in the Washington County Health Department.

Listen MPR News reporter Elizabeth Dunbar discusses Minnesota's 'contaminants of emerging concern' 2min 28sec
In what may be the nation's most extensive study of its kind, a survey of 118 test wells scattered around Minnesota has found that about a third of them contain measurable levels of antibiotics, detergents, or other consumer chemicals known as "contaminants of emerging concern."
The chemicals, apparently coming from landfills, septic systems and sewage treatment systems, have been found in surface waters in recent years, and some scientists have looked at their effects on fish and other animals. But this new survey, published online Monday by the U.S. Geological Survey, is the most extensive evidence yet that the chemicals are also making their way into both shallow and deep aquifers in Minnesota.
Beneath the Surface, a special Ground Level report
Groundwater is the source of drinking water for three-fourths of Minnesotans.
The study (PDF), conducted between late 2009 and mid-2012 by the USGS and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, found no chemicals in excess of drinking water quality standards.
But for four of the most common chemicals it found -- the antibiotic azithromycin, the antihistamine diphenhydramine, the flame-retardant tributyl phosphate and the animal antibiotic lincomycin - neither the state nor the federal government maintains any health-based water quality standards.
Our use of these chemicals in our everyday lives is releasing them into our environment. Our question as a society is, 'What do we think about that?'
The chemicals come from a variety of consumer and industrial products - prescription and over-the-counter medicines, lotions, detergents, plastic-making ingredients and more.
"Our use of these chemicals in our everyday lives is releasing them at low levels into our environment," said Mindy Erickson, groundwater specialist for the USGS. "Our question as a society is, 'What do we think about that?'"

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the debut edition of The Green Room on Lordsofpain.net. My name is Leaf and I am the winner of the Voice competition that was contested in the Columns Forum earlier this year.
On that note, I strongly urge you to consider entering the latest competition: The LOP Grand Prix. This contest is purely for fun so if you wish to give column-writing a try, this is the perfect platform to do so. The rules for the contest can be found HERE. I will be one of five judges for the event so I will personally look forward to any new entrants wishing to take part.
Plugs aside, I think we are all set to enter The Green Room, a magical place in which we pull up a chair and thoroughly analyse a given topic. With a new WWE World Heavyweight Champion set to be crowned at WWE Money In The Bank this Sunday, I figured we would sit down with our eight championship contenders and play a very special game of the board-game Snakes and Ladders. I never thought that I would type that sentence.
With that being said, lets find out which of our eight men will slide down a slippery snake and which will have a chance to climb a ladder of greatness.
Im always wary of last-minute additions. The last minute addition of Kane tells me that he was never in line to win the match. This is a different situation than Dean Ambrose in the contract match as the other competitors for that match were announced on the same night that he was later inserted.
As seen during Smackdowns conclusion, the Big Red Machine truly has been added for storyline purposes. He assisted Randy Orton in climbing a ladder, proving that he will be aiding the Viper on Sunday. That is not a bad thing, it actually makes perfect booking sense. Triple H handed Orton a slot in the match, then Roman Reigns found his way in. To counteract that, the Game added The Big Red Monster. Kane is the necessary insurance policy.
The only possibility of Kane winning the match on Sunday would be if he went rogue. He is a monster after all. However, unless Orton defeats Kane for the championship between now and when Bryan returns, I dont see how an altered face vs. face match between Bryan and Kane would work considering their interactions throughout the Authority storyline. Wouldnt you just cut out the middle-man and have Orton win the match, rather than play out that scenario? The WWE wouldnt benefit from a sudden face turn and title reign for the 47-year old Glenn Jacobs.
I like the addition of Kane in this match. He is aligned with the Authority and he was previously set to be the #1 Contender for Bryans title. As demonstrated though, he wont be winning this match.

It seems like you cant drive anywhere without running into summer construction.
And as frustrating and annoying as the delays the construction creates, its an even bigger hardship on some of your favorite businesses.
At Blue Bonnet Mexican restaurant, its whats not on the menu thats feeding frustration
There`s a lot of noise, lots of dust, lots of pollution, says the restaurants owner, Gary Mobell, about the construction project that is running behind schedule for completion.
The project started in the early part of February and the project was only supposed go only 40 days. We are well past that 40 day mark, he says.
This ongoing construction is going into its fifth month.
And when its over, there will be a new storm sewer and gas lines running beneath South Broadway.
But its progress at a price.
We are about 25 percent off from where we should be at in the summer, says Mobell about their revenues.
His family has owned the restaurant for more than 46 years.
