Caesarstone Sdot Yam Ltd., the maker of quartz countertops, is heading for its first-ever quarterly stock loss amid concern the companys push to ramp up output is coming just as the U.S. housing recovery weakens.
Yet Chief Executive Officer Yos Shiran is unfazed.
The way he sees it, the success or failure of the Israeli companys expansion wont be determined by the strength of the American housing market. Thats because Caesarstone, which gets about 35 percent of its revenue in the U.S., is counting on taking a bigger slice of the countertop market by getting more shoppers to choose quartz over competing materials, such as granite and marble.
Caesarstones growth engine is based on a material-conversion story, so this is a growth that happens regardless of whats happening in the market, Shiran said in a phone interview on June 13, two days after checking on the construction site of the companys first U.S. plant in Richmond Hill, Georgia. Of course, if theres a strong rebound, it helps, but we are not depending on it and our plans are not based upon it.
The weakness in the housing market, which Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen called disappointing on May 7, is worrying investors after they bid the stock up 211 percent in New York last year in what was the biggest gain on the Bloomberg Israel-US Index. Caesarstone, based in Sdot Yam, Israel, fell 1.5 percent last week to $46.53 in New York, extending its decline this quarter to 14 percent. The stock is down 6.3 percent this year, compared with a 1.8 percent advance in the Israel-U.S. stock index.
The stock is vulnerable to perceptions in the U.S. housing market, Bruce Schoenfeld, research director at New York-baseXAUUSDd BlueStar Global Investors LLC, said by phone June 13. The data about housing in the U.S. has been pretty fairly muted.
Yellen flagged the industry as a risk to the economic outlook in testimony to Congress in May, while Treasury Undersecretary for Domestic Finance Mary Miller said last week the recovery has been uneven.
While sales of previously owned homes rose for the first time this year in April, they were still some 7 percent lower than a year earlier, according to data from the National Association of Realtors. New single-family house sales were 4.2 percent below the year-earlier level, Commerce Department data showed.
The Standard and Poors Supercomposite Homebuilding Index, which includes companies such as Lennar Corp. and PulteGroup Inc., has declined 2 percent this year, compared with a 4.8 percent gain in the broader S&P 500 Index.
Shiran was in Richmond Hill, a town south of Savannah in Georgia, to visit the site of Caesarstones new plant, which will be its first in the U.S. The company is investing about $100 million in the facility, which will have two production lines. The first should be up and running by the first half of 2015, and the second should be operating by the end of next year, he said.

Its been a successful four years for Deanne Dawe, who operates her business, Tidy Solutions, from an office in Clarkes Beach.
Submitted photo
Deanne Dawe owns Tidy Solutions, a house designing business out of Clarke's Beach.
Dawe is one of several women from the Conception Bay North area to get nominated for a prestigious award from the Newfoundland and Labrador Organization of Women Entrepreneurs (NLOWE). Two others are Natalie Austin and Shannon Doyle, both of Carbonear.
For the second year in a row, Dawe has been notified she is in the running for the Youth Entrepreneur of the Year award, an award for successful young entrepreneurs under 35, who operate a profitable business.
Tidy Solutions has been steadily gaining popularity for those looking to build new homes, mainly because Dawe produces custom house plans.
As a certified interior designer not to be confused with an interior decorator Dawe uses drafting software to assist clients to design their dream home, whether it be through renovations or a new build.
Her interest in designing came at a young age, when she recognized a skill many other children didnt have.
When I was a kid, and the other kids were drawing hopscotch (on the pavement), I was drawing house plans, Dawe told The Compass in a phone interview June 10.

The Shadow Year -
June 15, 2014 by

THE SHADOW YEAR, Hannah Richells latest novel, starts out slowly, examining the sadness and grief of Lila, a woman who has recently lost a child. The story builds to a dramatic and terrible conclusion with tension rising page by page as the story shifts between Lila's perspective and that of Kat, living in the same house 30 years earlier. The two stories interweave in ways both obvious and surprising, and Richell's highly charged and effortless writing draws readers in from page one.
Soon after losing her daughter, in an accident of which she has little memory and that happened just months after her father died, Lila inherits a house in the farm country north of London. It is really a run-down cottage, inaccessible by road but close to a beautiful and isolated lake. Lila, an interior decorator and renovator by profession, hopes that fixing up the cottage will help heal her heart and give her quiet time to help remember the details of the accident. But leaving London means leaving her husband Tom, also in mourning, behind. As she spends more and more time alone in the cottage, her marriage grows increasingly tense. It is with kind-hearted neighbors named William and Evelyn that Lila finally begins to relax and find a sense of peace. Still, she must face her strained relationship with Tom, her complicated relationship with her mother and the difficult memories of her father.
"Literary in style, but not stuffy or arrogant, THE SHADOW YEAR is entertaining and sometimes heartwrenching."
The year is 1980, and Kat and her friends are fresh out of college. A trip to an abandoned house on a lake inspires them to cancel their plans for jobs for the next year and stay, the five of them, in the house, living off the land. Kat, raised in her early years by her junkie parents before moving with her little sister Freya into a foster home, is in love with Simon, the charismatic leader of their group. She sets out to make the house more comfortable as Mac takes the lead on hunting food, Ben becomes the house chef, and his girlfriend, Carla, the gardener. The idyllic life they hope to craft for themselves starts to fall apart as winter approaches, supplies run low, and the strain only increases when the beautiful Freya arrives, attracting Simon's attention just when Kat thinks he has finally come to care for her romantically. The delicate balance of feelings and responsibilities fall apart after one night of intoxication and violence, and the consequences are devastating and deadly.
The stories of Lila and Kat are twisted images of each other but also connected in ways that unfold as the novel progresses. The lakeside house is the setting for both, but what happens to Lila and Kat take them in two very different directions. Some of the connections are quickly apparent to keen readers, but Richell has a few tricks up her writerly sleeve as well. Figuring out some of the elements and conjunctions between the two plots in no way diminishes the impact of the novel.
Literary in style, but not stuffy or arrogant, THE SHADOW YEAR is entertaining and sometimes heartwrenching. It is a smart page-turner, a bit scary and quite atmospheric, exploring the depths of sadness, loneliness, loss and hope, as well as the meaning of family.

GreenClaimed, a green building materials brand created by Cali Bamboo, recently released a new line of 100% reclaimed solid American oak flooring.
Made in the USA and sustainably sourced by salvaging barns, factories, and mills, this solid oak flooring retains unique characteristics only made possible by its previous life of service in Americas heartlands. Knots, cracks, saw marks and nail holes show the history of the wood and allude to the laboring hands that worked with each plank in many decades past.
We are offering a true rustic modern floor that not only reclaims a piece of American history but prevents the need to harvest from live forests, furthering our mission to provide quality sustainable building materials to both residential and commercial customers, says Jeff Goldberg, Cali Bamboos CEO. The distressed character these floors possess contrasts beautifully with contemporary architecture and design while becoming a living reminder of simpler times.
The flooring is sold unfinished and easily takes a variety of finishes. Cali Bamboo recommends using a natural oil finish to enhance the floors true character. Oil finishes penetrate the wood and effectively strengthen and protect the floor while revealing and complementing the natural grain and patina of the wood.
GreenClaimed reclaimed oak flooring comes in two styles; distressed, for the bold at heart, or remilled a slightly more conservative variant. Plank sizes are 1.5-8 feet long, 3-6 inches wide, and inch thick, and features tongue and groove edge milling facilitating nail-down or glue-down installation options.

4 reasons to choose carpet -

Wall-to-wall carpeting, once a home decor status symbol, has been overshadowed in recent years by the popularity of hardwood flooring. However, carpet can be a comfortable, affordable, green and attractive floor covering option. Find out why.
Comfort
Theres nothing like sinking your toes into the deep pile of a carpet when you first get out of bed on a frosty winter morning. Trending now for the bedroom are super comfy plush carpets some of them so soft that you need to use a special vacuum cleaner.
Speaking of winter, carpeting creates a warm and cozy surface that small children and pets will especially enjoy. Carpets insulating effect may allow you to lower your thermostat and reduce your heating bills in the cooler months.
Walking on carpeted floors with resilient underlay is easy on the joints, making carpet a great choice for homeowners with arthritis, bursitis and similar problems.
In a busy, lively household, carpeting acts as a sound buffer. In fact, many condo dwellers are obliged by their bylaws to install wall-to-wall for this very reason.
To reduce the effect of dust on family members allergies or other breathing problems, you should vacuum carpets frequently. A vacuum cleaner with a special HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter will prevent dust circulation in the indoor environment. Make sure that the carpet is kept dry to avoid mold, which is also dangerous to the respiratory system. (This may be why the fashion for carpeting bathrooms was so short-lived.)
Cost
Carpeting is an affordable flooring solution, lower priced than almost all other materials except for vinyl sheeting. Although installation costs slightly more for carpet than for hardwood, the overall cost of carpet totals approximately half that of wood.
