LINCOLN The firm selected in January to provide architectural services for the new Central Nebraska Veterans Home in Kearney is set to begin work, according to a press release from the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.
The state signed the contract this week with Wilkins Hinrichs Stober Architects of Kearney as the lead firm for the project. The Kearney firm won a competitive bidding process to design the $121 million facility.
According to John Hilgert, director of DHHSs Division of Veterans Homes, it is prudent to complete the next elements of the application to demonstrate both its readiness for federal participation and to ensure a deliberate and thoughtful design.
The Kearney project was not funded in 2013, when Gov. Dave Heineman selected Kearney for the facility. However, the Kearney project ranks 22nd on a list in which the 21 projects ahead of it received either full or partial funding.
The state has committed $47 million, the city of Kearney has pledged $10.1 million, and the federal government is being asked to fund the remainder, about $65 million.
It is very important to start the design work necessary to complete the next step in the grant process, Hilgert said. It has become even more obvious and apparent that federal funding will be forthcoming. When funding is granted, Nebraska will be ready.
When the selection of Wilkins Hinrichs Stober Architects was announced in January, Hilgert said the firm was uniquely qualified for the project because it has experience in planning and design of more than 100 senior care projects, including facilities specializing in independent and assisted living, skilled nursing care and memory care.
South-central Nebraska projects include the Grand Island Good Samaritan Village and the Holdrege Christian Homes Assisted and Independent Living facility.
In addition, Wilkins Hinrichs Stober Architects has experience with the institutional and commercial food service industry and the Kearney Public Schools system and several projects for Central Community Colleges Hastings campus.
As I said in January, with their 35 years of experience in planning, designing and developing related projects, Im confident the leadership of Wilkins Hinrichs Stober Architects will result in an outstanding new home that will make Nebraska veterans proud, Hilgert said.

Calculate installation prices for Vinyl, Fiber Cement, Cedar Clapboard & Shingles, & Aluminum Siding. Free Siding Calculator tool helps homeowners estimate residential siding prices. To calculate siding installation price, simply plug-in your home foundation measurements, number of floors in you home and number of windows and doors that will need to get trimmed with flat-stock aluminum coil.
Siding Calculator v. 1.1 features: Progressive siding pricing algorithm accounts for smaller residential siding projects (under 700 sq. ft.) prices are adjusted to account for smaller size job. Now you can also estimate cost of installing aluminum copping (aluminum trim) around windows, doors, bay windows, etc. It is also possible to calculate soffit and fascia installation cost for vented vinyl soffits and aluminum fascia trimming.
* Siding prices are estimated, and will vary based on your geographic location, local market conditions and and other factors, such as fluctuating costs of roofing materials. Although vinyl siding prices are not directly related to oil prices, they seem to go up when oil is up, and usually do not drop back down. In case of cedar siding the clear-coat staining or painting is not included in price calculation.
** Siding prices are calculated based on the assumption that you are working with a reputable, fully licensed and insured siding contractor. Although the General Liability Insurance for siding installation is rather inexpensive, the Workers Comp insurance is what the contractors usually skip on.
It is important that the information that you plug into the siding calculator is more or less accurate this way you will get the best estimate of siding installation costs for your particular home.
House Dimensions:
Take the ground measurements of your house, from corner to corner. Our calculator assumes that your house has rectangular shape. It cannot operate with odd shaped objects, so when you are plugging in the ground dimensions of your home, that is not rectangular, calculate the outer perimeter of your house and plug it in, multiplied by one.
For example, you have an L shaped house that measures 50 x 25 feet for the main section of the house and 20 x 15 feet for the bump-out section. Calculate your outside wall dimensions in our case it will be: 50 (back side), 25 + 25 (sides of the main section), 30 (front of the main section), and 15 + 15 + 20 (sides and front of the bump-out section). Your total outside perimeter (length of the outside walls) is 180 linear feet. Plug in 180 x 1 into the calculator.
PS. You can use the length of the outside walls to also get the pricing on soffit and fascia installation.

La PORTE The county is taking preliminary action in redistricting the voter ward lines to match the same criteria of the new precincts created for La Porte and Michigan City.
The new voter precincts will need to be completed in review for the Indiana blank by August. The new precincts will not be in effect until 2015 and will not impact this years fall election.
On Thursday morning, at the La Porte County Courthouse, county officials held their first public meeting to discuss the new ward lines. La Porte County Clerk Lynne Spevak lead the conversation, and county officials were in attendance.
The first meeting covered the Michigan City ward lines in a general overview of new deletions and additions within each precinct. Spevak said since there are so many areas to cover, the meetings will focus on Michigan City and then they will review La Porte.
This is a preliminary meeting, Spevak said. Once we pull streets we will be able to get a better idea.
The first ward in Michigan City will add the residential area within the perimeter of Vail Street, Springland Avenue, Carroll Avenue, Holliday Street, Ridgeland Avenue and Michigan Boulevard, back to Vail Street.
The second ward in Michigan City will eliminate the homes between 10th Street, Ohio Street, Ripley Street and Tennessee Street. This section will be in the third ward.
Michigan Citys third ward will include the small section formerly in the second ward and a section between Earl Road, Hitchcock Street and U.S. 20.
The fourth ward in Michigan City will add more portions within Hitchcock Street, Earl Road, Ohio Street and U.S. Highway 20.
The Edgewood area will be moved out of the fourth ward and moved to the fifth ward. This areas street perimeters are Franklin Street, Coolspring Avenue, Cleveland Avenue and Barker Road.
