The city has shelled out thousands of dollars a month since 2009 to rent sidewalk sheds to protect pedestrians from construction outside a Brooklyn courthouse even though work has yet to start.
In five years, we havent seen a soul doing any work. Its a shame all that money sitting out there, groused a courthouse veteran.
I wouldnt mind if work was being done, but nothing. Its sad, but thats the way the city does business.
The Department of Citywide Administrative Services first informed courthouse workers in a memo in February 2009 that sidewalk shedding will be installed around building ... for approximately two months.
The city then began paying a scaffolding company $2,862 monthly for the sheds outside the downtown entrances to Brooklyns supreme court for civil matters.
After 64 months, the tab is now more than $180,000 yet none of the planned facade repair work has even started at 360 Adams St.
DCAS spokeswoman Julianne Cho said the job still has to be officially transferred to another city agency, the Department of Design and Construction, before work can actually begin. That should happen sometime this year, she said.

The shedding was erected in 2009 per [the law] to protect the public, in preparation for facade repair and cleaning, Cho said. Since that time, funding has been obtained and design work completed for the intended repairs.
The project involves cleaning and repairing the buildings exterior, mortar, and window supports, Cho said.

WITH summer finally here, people are being urged to lock up their sheds as criminals set their sights on the valuables left inside.
Gloucestershire police is urging homeowners to get sheducated and protect both high and low value items as scores of shed thefts take place each year.
Many of these thefts are avoidable with a little security awareness, with harm reduction advisor for Gloucestershire Police, Kim Mowday, saying she urged everyone to be on their guard.
Bicycles, for example, left unlocked in insecure sheds are often thought to be secure by their owners due to the privacy of the location, she said.
Unfortunately this isnt the case - thieves will jump over garden walls and snatch anything they see.
Whilst we are doing all we can to catch thieves and reduce these crimes there are a lot of things you can do to keep your property secure and stop thieves striking.
She added bikes were not safe unprotected either, as thieves throw them back across the wall and then taken them away.
Advice includes replacing wood screws with easily obtainable 'coach bolts' or security screws and fixing security padlocks.

The grim reality of Britain's housing crisis has been laid bare by these pictures of the slum-like conditions endured by the most desperate people in UK society.
For just 20 per week, migrant workers and jobless locals live in 'beds in sheds' - windowless garages and outhouses turned into an austere living space.
The images were taken in the Whetley Hill area of Bradford, West Yorkshire, by a builder who was horrified that people are forced to live in such a degrading manner.

There was not much on the beach strands, but they were virtually wiped clean, and the story of the development of the islands started anew.
The chance Hazel afforded to start over perhaps wasn't an unmitigated tragedy.
To wit: "In 1950, Daught Tripp at Shallotte Point built a very popular dance hall," Fred R. David and Vern J. Bender wrote in their 2009 book, "The History of Ocean Isle."
"Teenagers came to the dance hall from hundreds of miles away to square dance. Large speakers were mounted in trees at the Shallotte Point Dance Hall and the music blasted (Ocean Isle Beach) every Saturday night. Hurricane Hazel destroyed the dance hall in 1954 and it was never rebuilt."
"We are a family destination, not a party destination," Sunset Beach Mayor Ron Watts said, repeating a refrain heard up and down the Brunswick coast. "We all have policies that discourage graduation parties and that sort of thing.... If we can encourage anything to Myrtle Beach, that's what we share with them," he said with a laugh.
"We like what we have here a nice, quiet atmosphere and we want to continue to promote that as best we can."
The common hyphenated buzzword: Family-friendly.
"Most of those who live here and who have family vacation homes would love to put us in a time capsule," Oak Island Mayor Betty Wallace said. "Oak Island was originally plotted out as single-family residential. There were a lot of deed restrictions, and it was geared toward the blue-collar working man, and fishing. There are hundreds, maybe thousands of homes here that are 1,000 square feet, a couple of bedrooms," Wallace noted. "A lot of them are cinderblock.
"We want to keep that. We don't want to get into the insanity that you can find at Wrightsville Beach three stories, 10 to 12 bedrooms, all just a vacation beach. When you look out here, you might see two stories on stilts, but on either side is an 800- to 1,000-square-foot small little bungalow, and you see that not every vacant lot even has a structure on it."

Patients at East Morgan County Hospital and their families will have much more space in their rooms after an addition is completed.
The new wing will add almost 50 percent to the size of EMCH with an extra 32,000 square feet and much of that space will go into patient rooms, said CEO Linda Thorpe during a tour of the most recent stage of the work.
"It's an exciting time for us," Thorpe said.
It has gotten to the "dry wall walk through" stage, when walls are up and people can get a sense of the layout of rooms, nursing stations and other aspects of the new facilities, she said. The public was invited to see the progress on the $20 million addition.

Banner Health chipped in $9.5 million for the project, and The EMCH District paid the rest. This project has been in planning for the past three to five years, Thorpe said.
The project adds 19 single-patient rooms, a brand-new kitchen and dining facility, and a new lobby and waiting area. Also, the hospital will gain more than 100 parking spaces, she said.
Patient rooms will have all the state-of-the-art technology for care, plus spacious bathrooms and closets to keep possessions. Each patient room will have an added 80 square feet of room, which offers more place for family and friends to visit. They will include couches for visitors to use.

UPDATE Just after 1:00 pm an alarm in the Chlorine Room of the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre sounded alerting the pool staff that chlorine gas levels were above normal levels. The Chlorine Room is located on the outside of the building and isolated from the public areas of the Leisure Centre facility. Leisure Centre Staff immediately contacted the Maple Ridge Fire Department. As a precaution, staff conducted an orderly evacuation of the building allowing patrons to obtain personal belongings. The entire facility, including the pool, fitness centre and youth centre was completely cleared within 10 minutes. The Maple Ridge Fire Department arrived within a few minutes and followed Hazardous material (Hazmat) protocols around the Chlorine Room. In addition, Firefighters assisted staff in doing a final sweep of the entire facility to ensure that no one remained in the building. The preliminary assessment was that there was a minor leak in the Chlorine service conduit, and the Fire department, working with Leisure Centre staff, isolated the Chlorine system, purged the conduit and stayed on site until the gas levels Chlorine Room were zero. The automatic Chlorination system has been shut down and manual water testing and chlorination will be used until the main system has been examined by a technician early next week. At no time did the gas get into any public areas. At no time was there any health risk to patrons, first responders or District staff due to the fast implementation of all safety procedures and protocols. The Fire Department and District staff would like to thank all of the people that were in the facility at the time of the incident for their cooperation and understanding during the orderly evacuation. Patrons affected by the evacuation were given a complimentary pass for the facility. The facility has now reopened to the public.

Maple Ridge Leisure Centre reopens after evacuation

A block of homes were evacuated on the North Side early this morning after a vehicle crashed into a gas meter and sheared off the porches of four homes, city officials said.
The struck gas line started to leak after the 3 a.m. crash in the 1500 block of Federal Street and Equitable Gas crews were called out, according to Pittsburgh public safety spokeswoman Sonya Toler. Six homes had to be evacuated and there were no injuries. Gas service was restored shortly after 4 a.m. and residents were allowed to return to their homes, she said.
The driver, Lisa Williams, 44, of Millvale, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, making false reports to law enforcement, driving under suspension, and risking a catastrophe.
The city Fire Department inspected the homes and determined they were structurally sound, Ms. Toler said.
