UTICA, N.Y. -- The Children's Museum of History, Natural History and Science was created decades ago to be a safe place for hands-on learning and for children to grow, but a recent inspection brought the museum's safety into question.
"There were numerous issues, safety issues that we discovered some that could have possibly put children at risk and some that would have definitely put fire fighters at risk were they fighting a fire," said Utica Fire Chief Russell Brooks.
Fire officials said the museum never registered for a New York state fire inspection, which is mandated by a state law created in 2008. Fire officials conducted a long overdue inspection of the building two weeks ago.
"One of the issues was they ran wiring down a vacant non-use chimney along with a gas line. And that just isn't acceptable," said Brooks.
In addition, the inspection report stated extension cords were used in place of permanent outlets, there were numerous cases of improper electrical wiring and installation, and some of the panic and fire exit hardware, including the sprinkler system, were not operational.
Inspectors did a thorough search throughout the five-story building, Brooks said. By the time they were finished, more than 75 codes violations were found, many of which officials said could have been easily corrected.
"The Children's Museum is such a quality-of-life issue for the city and for the children in the entire region. Nobody wants them to be closed down, nobody wants children to be denied this wonderful experience," said Brooks.
Calls and e-mails to the director of the museum were not returned. According to the website, the museum will be closed until early July to make the necessary repairs and renovations.
Brooks said the Children's Museum will have to go to City Court for their numerous violations. A date has not been set.

Lovegrove trees still under threat
The public campaign from Tree Street residents has reignited after Bunbury Deputy Mayor Brendan Kelly warned the trees on Lovegrove Avenue could be removed.
The Friends of Lovegrove residents group thought they had won in their campaign against the councils proposal to alter Lovegrove into a one-way street and remove five trees for more parking bays.
Instead, the council last week agreed in a drawn-out debate to a compromise proposal to retain the trees.
However, on Friday, Deputy Mayor Brendan Kelly told the group there was nothing in the decision preventing the trees being removed when the council completed its drainage works on the street.
This is despite council voting 6-5 against a proposal to remove the trees during the meeting.
If an extra ten car parks on the northern side of Lovegrove Avenue will enhance safety, then in order to find room for those car parks the trees will go, Cr Kelly said.
Tree removal is likely to happen in any case to facilitate the necessary planned drainage works.
There should be no allusions about what will happen as the work for extra car-parking and new drainage in Lovegrove Avenue proceeds.
Mayor Gary Brennan said the trees could be removed during the street upgrade, but only if they were damaged.

Business Insurance USA announced today a new affordable line of general liability irrigation system installer insurance, designed to help reduce catastrophes that can arise legally or financially when lawsuits are filed against a sprinkler installation company.
Irrigation sprinkler installation professionals obviously provide their professional services on site, explains Gary Fisher, Business Insurance USAs Executive Director, which opens them up to more risks of accidental injuries or even being accused of causing damage to the customers property. By creating a line of general liability protection that even the smallest sprinkler companies can afford, we help reduce those risks so that the company can focus on service and growth.
Sprinkler system installer liability insurance provides commercial general liability coverage to independent installers and companies alike. It is designed to provide a broad range of protection against many types of risks that can endanger the viability of the business.
Risks that are common for irrigation installation companies include physical injuries and harm: a customer may need to seek medical attention if they trip over a sprinkler line that is not yet buried for instance. Property damage allegations may be filed against the sprinkler company if the customer believes their award winning rose bushes died due to something the installers did, or even if they discover a new scratch on the side of their home.
The new general liability irrigation system installer insurance from Business Insurance USA helps pay for medical expenses when accidental harm happens. It also pays for the costs associated with repairing or replacing property if the company is found to be at fault for the alleged damages. Additionally, this coverage pays for costs that are normally incurred by the company when they must legally defend themselves against liability lawsuits. The business insurance policy can pay for legal representation, court filing fees and other expenses that arise in relation to the suit.
About Business Insurance USA
Business Insurance USA excels in providing multiple layers of business protection to a wide variety of industries. Through the various business insurance options they offer, the company is able to ensure individual professionals and small businesses have just the right types of coverage at prices their budget can afford.
Located in California, Business Insurance USA offers business owners policies, general liability protection, surety bonds, workers compensation insurance, commercial auto coverage and more to companies across twenty states.

Livonia Ask Richard Glomb about the effects the Interstate 96 construction has had on his bowling alley, and he will give you an earful.
Glomb, general manager of Cloverlanes Bowl east of Middle Belt on the Schoolcraft Road service drive in Livonia, said business has never been more bleak. Open bowling revenue is down 40 percent. The days the alley is open have been cut from seven to four. And large parties are declining to book gatherings until the project is completed.
Although the freeway rebuild project seems to be on schedule for completion in the fall, owners and managers of businesses say they have seen a dip in foot traffic, but are adjusting.
My league fees are one-half of what it was. My open bowling is 20 percent down. Its devastating, said Glomb, who has run Cloverlanes for 11 years. Im having to lay off more than three quarters of my staff.
Glomb said his situation is much worse than when the recession hit in 2008, estimating his business has lost $20,000 alone in advance bookings for large parties. Because were reacting to what we are seeing right now, were going to squeak through, he said.
The construction, which began on April 5 after about two weeks of delays because of inclement weather, has had some impact on Snookers Pool and Pub, off the service drive west of Inkster Road, manager Jeremy Robinson said.
Its a hit or miss, Robinson said of business. But it definitely has affected us. I think a lot of our clientele that we have is because we are located right off the freeway. Now they cant do that. Some of the people I used to see I dont see as much now.
Robinson said the project and the increased traffic on the service drives, which remain open on both sides during construction, has been a deterrent. He was hoping more construction workers would patronize the pub, but hes only seen a few come in.
Enri Dauti, the owner of Prime Grill restaurant at the corner of Merriman and the Schoolcraft service drive, said the uptick of construction workers has helped replenish some of the reduced business.
Weve lost some customers and we have gained from some of the construction workers, he said. Some customers who once stopped by three or four times a week now stop only once.
