Restaurant closed for two days after live rat discovered - June 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A restaurant inside the international terminal of the Vancouver International Airport, next to the second-floor food court, was closed last Friday because of unsanitary conditions and a pest infestation.

According to a report by Vancouver Coastal Health, a routine inspection found a live rat caught in a trap underneath the Koho Restaurants commercial dishwasher.

Rat droppings were found in the main food preparation line, on stainless steel food preparation tables, inside the corner of a deep fryer base, along the wall of two handsinks in the kitchen, along the wall of a food prep area outside the walk-in cooler, behind the garage door storage area, on equipment push carts located in food prep area, on top of the commercial dishwasher and on top of liquor boxes in the kitchen.

The eatery was permitted to re-open on Sunday, according to environmental health officer Dalton Cross.

The operators were advised to ensure all rodent droppings are removed from the premises. All affected areas to be cleaned and sanitized with an approved sanitizer. Professional pest control company to be contacted for immediate service and daily inspections required until further notice, according to a report available at tinyurl.com/KohoRestaurant.

The report also found general sanitation poor.

Though the operator said cleaning had been conducted during the start of the week, there were multiple areas that show a large amount of food residue, debris and grime accumulation.

The health inspector ordered the immediate correction of the main cook line, dishwashing area, garage storage area, under shelving, grease and liquid pooling underneath the deep fryer.

State inspects Mililani Mauka homes infested with little fire ants - June 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Dept.of Agriculture says for the first time, little fire ants have turned up in a residential neighborhood on Oahu.

Earlier this month, a resident on Auina St. in Mililani Mauka sent in samples of ants after family members were bitten inside their home. The next day, the Department of Agriculture confirmed it was the invasive pest.

We are finding it in more and more houses today (Friday). Theres about 125 houses right around this area. Theres a gulch behind there. Were checking to see if thats infested and then theres houses on the other side of the gulch that were also checking, said Rob Curtiss, acting plant pest control branch manager for the Department of Agriculture.

To survey the area, workers planted vials outside of homes and marked them in a GPS system. The vials contain peanut butter, which should attract the ants. About an hour later, workers returned to the site to check out the findings.

Well be able to make better decisions on how we can proceed, whether we can eradicate or just get it under control, Curtiss said.

The Dept. of Agriculture says at least eight homes on Auina St. in Mililani-Mauka are infested and officials believe that number will go up as they investigatethe extent of the infestation.

But until they do, officialscant say how long it will take to get rid of them.

State Rep. Beth Fukumoto lives down the street from the infested homes. Its actually something I have been watching for over a year now, because we knew it was a possibility, she said.

Neighborhood board chair Dean Hazama also lives close by.Its a surprise to all of us. I think that it is important and critical for the state to keep our residents informed of their efforts, he said.

Finding cockroaches in your home or business can be very distressing. Rentokils technicians have the tools to control pests around the world, so whilst cockroaches may be the Worlds most feared pest, you can leave it to the experts to implement professional and effective cockroach control treatments.

Bedbug problem? Blame the winter weather - June 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A national pest control company says it has seen an unusual spike in bedbug cases this year in Nova Scotia and the rest of the Maritimes, an increase they believe was partly due to bad winter weather.

When people stay home more than usual, the constant availability of blood meals speeds up the bugs reproduction, said Jim Newhook, Atlantic branch manager at Abell Pest Control.

It definitely contributed somewhat. They have to feed five times before they can breed.

However, a raft of other changes also play a role in bedbugs steady move into Atlantic Canada, said Newhook, who teaches a seminar on bedbugs in the tourism management program at Nova Scotia Community College.

This year, there were also more calls than usual from rural Nova Scotia, said Mike Heimbach, director of business development at Abell, which he said is the second-biggest pest control company in Canada.

Bedbugs took a little longer to reach the East Coast than the rest of the country, but now they are making their way from hotels and urban dwellings through the region, said Heimbach.

What we are seeing is bedbugs are spreading further and further away from major cities, he said.

They started where youd have them in Halifax theyre spreading out to more rural areas where people are travelling.

Overall, Abell has seen about 25 per cent more calls about bedbugs in the past year compared with the one previous, said Heimbach.

Throughout the rest of Canada, the average year-over-year increase in calls was 20 per cent, he said.
