The RIBA's New Tack - June 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has decided to set up a committee to consider its own role in engaging with communities facing civil conflict and natural disaster, the Architects Journal has reported.

The establishment of the International Committee Working Group is, in part, a face-saving measure that follows the RIBAs controversial call to consider a boycott of its Israeli counterpart at the August meeting of the International Union of Architects (UIA) general assemblya call that the UIA has rejected and that leading international architects opposed. The RIBA had sought the suspension of the Israeli Association of United Architects (IAUA) from the UIA until it acts to resist projects on illegally-occupied land and observes international law and accords.

Itzhak Lipovetzky-Lir, past president of the Israeli architects association and its coordinator of international relations, said in an interview that he was satisfied with the outcome. After the British group received the UIAs rejection of its boycott call, he said, the RIBA council decided not to discuss it anymore. Its another way of retracting it. Instead, they decided to establish the committee, which is perfectly legitimate.

Lipovetzky-Lir said he had spoken with representatives to the UIA from many countries, including Russia, Turkey, and the United States, and they were categorically against considering a boycott. (As was RIBA Honorary Fellow Jill Ritblat, the wife of former British Land chairman John Ritblat, who said the RIBA should stay out of politics, according to the Architects Journal.) It opens a Pandoras box," said Lipovetzky-Lir, "that will be the end of the [UIA]. He added that he was grateful for the support and that we are happy that this threat to the UIA has been removed.

In its boycott call, the RIBA contended that the Israeli association had disregarded the international bodys Resolution 13, which condemns development projects and the construction of buildings on land that has been ethnically purified or illegally appropriated [and] all action contravening the fourth Geneva Convention. In response, the Israeli association wrote to the president and vice president of the RIBA stating that the IAUA has no political agenda [and] no impact on personal stance. The letter added that Resolution 13 was never meant to be a tool to be used against architects or associations of architects under the aegis of the UIA.

A group of more than 220 Palestinian architects wrote to the RIBAs president, Stephen Hodder, asking that he stay firm on the boycott call, which they described as a a crucial move in the face of illegal and unjust Israeli architectural practices that breach ethical codes, the Architects Journal reported.

Architectural firm to begin plans for Central Nebraska Veterans Home - June 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

LINCOLN The firm selected in January to provide architectural services for the new Central Nebraska Veterans Home in Kearney is set to begin work, according to a press release from the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

The state of Nebraska signed the contract this week with Wilkins Hinrichs Stober Architects of Kearney as the lead firm for the project. The Kearney firm won a competitive bidding process to design the $121 million facility.

According to John Hilgert, director of DHHSs Division of Veterans Homes, it is prudent to complete the next elements of the application to demonstrate both its readiness for federal participation and to ensure a deliberate and thoughtful design.

The Kearney project was not funded in 2013, when Gov. Dave Heineman selected Kearney for the facility. However, the Kearney project ranks 22nd on a list in which the 21 projects ahead of it received either full or partial funding.

The state of Nebraska has committed $47 million, the city of Kearney has pledged $10.1 million, and the federal government is being asked to fund the remainder, about $65 million.

"It is very important to start the design work necessary to complete the next step in the grant process," Hilgert said. "It has become even more obvious and apparent that federal funding will be forthcoming. When funding is granted Nebraska will be ready," Hilgert said.

When the selection of Wilkins Hinrichs Stober Architects was announced in January, Hilgert said the firm was uniquely qualified for the project, with experience in the planning and design of more than 100 senior care projects, including facilities specializing in independent and assisted living, skilled nursing care and memory care.

South-central Nebaska projects include the Grand Island Good Samaritan Village and the Holdrege Christian Homes Assisted and Independent Living facility.

In addition, Wilkins Hinrichs Stober Architects has experience with the institutional and commercial food service industry and the Kearney public school system and several projects for Central Community Colleges Hastings campus.

"As I said in January, with their 35 years of experience in planning, designing and developing related projects, Im confident the leadership of Wilkins Hinrichs Stober Architects will result in an outstanding new home that will make Nebraska veterans proud," Hilgert said.
