Deer Lodge bridge replacement starts July 7; rerouting plan set - June 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

DEER LODGE Replacement of the historic bridge on Deer Lodges Main Street over Cottonwood Creek is scheduled to begin July 7.

Montana Department of Transportation officials and Stacey Otte, representing Bauer and Buck Construction of Helena, met with Powell County commissioners, city officials and local residents Wednesday to explain the construction schedule and plans for easing the potential impact on local businesses.

    Heres the plan:

A two-way traffic/pedestrian detour route around the construction site will divert traffic west on Rainbow Avenue then south on Second Street to Missouri Avenue. However, westbound traffic on Higgins Avenue will have northbound access to Main Street. After local business people and others expressed concern, officials agreed that business access signage will be placed at the corner of Second and Cottonwood. also. No parking or access is permitted from California Avenue to just north of Higgins Avenue.

Safety first, Otte said. Cooperation from the community in avoiding the construction limits is essential to a safe and productive project. We encouragedrivers to slow down andbe aware ofincreased pedestrian traffic.

Construction work, expected to be completed by Oct. 8, includes removal of the existing bridge structure, excavation, installation of a new water main, drainage and electric utilities, installation of the new bridge structure with asphalt overlay, stream restoration, retaining wall, sidewalk, curb and gutter, signing and epoxy striping.

Main Street is state Highway 275 and is maintained by the highway department while bridges in the county are the responsibility of the commissioners. Cost of the project is $1.6 million. A FEMA grant is paying for construction of the bridge, MDOT paid for design and engineering. The city will replace an eight-inch city water main.

Monthly project status meetings are planned and will be announced.

The contractor contact number for comments, questions and/or complaints during construction is 406-565-8855. Calls will be answered 7 a.m.-7 p.m. or working hours; calls outside of working hours will be returned the next working day leave name and number on the message.

A long shot on grass - June 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Will Roger Federer grab an eighth Wimbledon, after lifting the Halle grass court trophy for the seventh time this year?

Tennis grand slam players have had only two weeks to transition from clay at the French Open to the grass surface at the ongoing Wimbledon (till July 6). This gap will be increased to three weeks from next year to help players adjust better to the surface change.

Grass, once the mainstay of tennis courts everywhere but increasingly rare, is the fastest surface with the ball bouncing to knee-level. On hard courts, it could be between the knee and the shoulder, and on clay courts it is above the shoulder. This makes the play technique on grass different from that on other surfaces it is relatively more aggressive.

    Slowdown on grass

Points in Wimbledon were scored quickly in the past. Champions Boris Becker and Pete Sampras, for instance, would win a point with four or five shots. Now long rallies are seen more often. TV channels flash the number of shots when a rally is long. The slowing of the games with longer rallies is meant to promote the entertainment value of the sport. Eminent commentators, once leading players themselves, have said the grass is different from how it was in the past and the balls are heavier, contributing to the slower pace. Many are calling it the homogenisation of surfaces faster courts becoming slower.

In tennis history, only six players have made a successful transition from clay to grass, winning the French Open and Wimbledon back-to-back Rene Lacoste (1925), Fred Perry (1935), Budge Patty (1950), Bjorn Borg (1978, 1979 and 1980), Rafael Nadal (2008 and 2010) and Roger Federer (2009). It is called the Channel Slam.

    Warm-up to Wimbledon

In the fortnight between the two Slams, there are four grass court warm-up tournaments for men, of which the ones at Queens Club, London, and Halle in Germany are especially patronised by leading players. But the probability of these finalists winning the Wimbledon is not high as happens in the Rome Masters vis--vis the French Open. All the top players participate in the Rome Masters, played on clay.

In the warm-up to Wimbledon, however, the high-ranked players are divided between London and Halle. Since 2000 only Lleyton Hewitt and Andy Murray have won back-to-back at Queens Club (called Aegon Championship) and Wimbledon. This year, Grigor Dimitrov was the champion in London, while it was Roger Federer in Germany. Dimitrov became a sensation after beating Alexandr Dolgopolov, Stanislas Wawrinka and Feliciano Lpez Daz-Guerra.

According to the draw, and going by the seeding, the quarter-final line-up in Wimbledon is likely to be: Novak Djokovic-Tom Berdych, Murray-David Ferrer, Wawrinka-Federer, and Milos Raonic-Nadal. Till a few years ago, Djokovic, Murray, Federer and Nadal constituted the quartet in Grand Slam semifinals. That quartets grip has loosened in more recent times.

When the thunder roars, it's time to go indoors - June 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Smoke Signals

By ALAN PERKINS Wednesday June 25, 2014 11:34 AM

Did you know that all thunderstorms produce lightning and lightning can strike as far as 10 miles away from any rainfall?

Many deaths from lightning occur ahead of the storm because people wait until the last minute before seeking shelter.

Last year, there were 23 fatalities directly attributed to lightning, according to data from the National Weather Service.

Hundreds more were struck and survived, suffering life-long injury and or permanent disability.

If you are outdoors and see lightning, move indoors to a completely enclosed building or into a hard-topped vehicle and close the windows.

Avoid being in or near high places and open fields, isolated trees, unprotected gazebos, car ports, pavilions, tents, shelters, baseball dugouts, flagpoles, light poles, metal or wood bleachers, metal fences, and water.

Don't hold on to metal items such as golf clubs, umbrellas or tools.

To determine how far a thunderstorm is from you, use the 30-30 Rule. When you see lightning, count the number of seconds that pass until you hear thunder. If you hear thunder within 30 seconds of seeing lightning, the storm is within six miles. Seek shelter immediately. Wait at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder before leaving shelter.
