TIME Living Tech This Startup is Trying to Createand Controlthe Internet of Your Home SmartThings wants to change how people live
NO. 1 THE SMART HOME IS CONSCIOUS
ADJ. AWARE OF YOUR WANTS AND NEEDS
Alex Hawkinsons house knows how to make his day.
As the 41-year-old father of two gets out of bed, the lights flicker on and the air temperature starts to warm. He walks down the stairs, and a Siri-like voice greets him from his Sonos sound system: Todays forecast is By the time he reaches for his mug of coffeeit began brewing automaticallythat womans voice has morphed into an NPR broadcast, and Hawkinson is checking his phone, which will receive a text if his 4-year-old son runs out the front door before breakfast. Should Hawkinson open the liquor cabinet, intentionally or not, his house will object. Isnt it a wee bit early?
If Hawkinson has his way, every family in the U.S. will be living like this within the next decade or so. And it will be largely thanks to his company, SmartThings, which has built a first-of-its-kind platform that allows the objects in your homedoors, locks, lightbulbs, even sprinkler systemsto talk to one another and prioritize your needs. Its only requirements: a smartphone, a $200 starter kit (including sensors and a hub they sync with) and a wild imagination.
Were at the outset of this wave where your home can give you security, peace of mind and more, Hawkinson says. Eventually, everything that should be connected will be connected.
If this narrative sounds familiar, thats because it is: companies have been promising the dawn of the smart homea futuristic dwelling full of gadgets working seamlessly to satisfy your every whimsince the 50s. Yet early efforts failed to deliver because of clunky tech and consumer wariness.
SmartThings, which launched in 2012, has arrived amid a legitimate sea change in home automation. In the past few years, the rise of cloud computing has made it easier than ever to build gadgets that connect to the so-called Internet of Things, meaning they can be monitored and controlled from afar, usually with their own smartphone app. Theres also been an uptick in the production of sensors and devices that enable you to smartify objects that are dumb. (Think plugging a desk lamp into an adapter controlled by your phone, or rigging a door with a motion detector that pings you about intruders.) By 2018, the research firm IHS Technology predicts, people will have installed 45 million smart-home services. Were really starting to see major volume here, says Lisa Arrowsmith, an IHS associate director. Its an exciting time.
But the race to make those gadgets and sensors work together has only just begun. Much as Google and Yahoo created search engines as a way to bring order to the Internet in the 90s, startups and established players alikeincluding Apple, AT&T and Googleare now enabling you to command the Internet of your home. Whoever creates the most compelling platform will not only revolutionize how we live but also command a huge share of whats expected to be a $12 billion annual business within five years.

If you like the idea of having a security system in your home, but dont like the idea of shelling out a bunch of money to have one installed, weve got some great news for you. Piper, one of the best do-it-yourself home security systems in the biz, just got a feature update and lower price.
For those who might be unfamiliar, Piper is a connected device thats equipped with a 180-degree HD security camera, an array of different environmental sensors, and both Wi-Fi and Z-wave radios. All this gear allows it to communicate with other devices on your home network, and also function as a cheap and effectivesecurity system for apartments and renters who have no real way to install a more traditional security setup.
See, it used to be that outfitting yourhomewith a security system meant contacting a security agency like Brinks or ADT, installing sensors all over your house, and paying a monthly fee to keep your service going. But now that sensor tech has become drastically cheaper than it used to be, cheap DIY home surveillance systems are starting to pop up, and Piper is one of the first (and best, so far) to hit the market.
Starting today, the device (which formerly retailed for $239) will now sell for just $199. This price drop comes in the wake of iControl Networks recent acquisition of Blacksumac the Canadian startup that brought Piper into the world about a year ago via a hugely-successful Indiegogo project. With iControls help, the company was able to streamline Pipers production process, allowing them to produce the device at a lower cost.
In addition to a smaller price tag, Piper is also getting two new features:Bedside Mode, which lets users manually turn on a siren in case of an emergency (and is also great for scaring squirrels off your porch, according to creator Russel Ure); and Z-Wave Light dimmer compatibility, which allows users to set the mood and control the lighting in their homes directly from the Piper mobile app.
Ure also hinted that additional features will be rolling out in the coming months, but couldnt give us specific details on what they might be. Regardless, its definitely safe to assume that this already excellent device will only get better in the future.

Piper home security system gets updated with new features, lower price
Brittany Hillen
Remember the Piper connected home security system that was recently bought by iControl? Following the update it received back in early April, the system has been revamped yet again, and with the newest batch of changes comes a particularly notable drop in price.
As of now, Piper is now priced at $199, down from the previous $239 USD, something said to result from the improvements brought about after the iControl acquisition. In addition to the new price, the home security setup has also gained a couple new features.
For those who use the system as their sole source of home security, the new Bedside Mode will come in handy. With this mode, Piper can be set to let loose a siren if a disturbance is detected in the night, alerting sleeping home owners (or renters) to a possible issue.
There's also a new Z-Wave Light dimmer compatibility. With this, Piper owners can control the lighting in their house using the device's mobile app and related hardware. Furthermore, additional updates are being promised for the future.
