Roger and Abby Abernethy from Marlborough Flybusters and Anti-Ants on the lookout for ants.
Ant numbers are booming in Marlborough, driving householders crazy and keeping pest control workers busy.
Pests were in big numbers throughout the district because of a mild winter and good breeding conditions, pest control workers said.
Flybusters and Anti-ants team Roger and Abby Abernethy said about 80 per cent of their work was dealing with ant infestations.
That should tail off in about a month, when flies were likely to take over as the biggest pest problem.
Cockroaches and rodents were fairly constant.
Roger Abernethy said there were "heaps" of people from across the district calling them out to deal with ant infestations. They were working from 6am till 6pm every day.
There were about six different species of ant in Marlborough, with the white-footed ant "a force to be reckoned with", he said.
That ant was a prolific breeder, competing strongly against other ant species. It liked structures, and tended to annoy people when it came inside because of the large numbers of ants that came in at the same time.

B rothers Anthony and Richard Wheat have breathed new life into this magnificent 200-plus year old building and made a quite fabulous family home.
They bought the building at The Terrace, Cheadle, several years ago after it had been used as a solicitor's office, but took it back to the original design and split it into two houses. The other side has already been renovated and sold and now it has been the turn of this one.
It is a hugely impressive building and testament to the amount of time, effort and money the brothers have put into it. The restoration has been of the total, back-to-brick variety, but the result is worth it. Anthony said: "We have done everything, absolutely everything to it. It has been rewired, replastered, we have put back the skirting and coving as it would have been all those years ago and left in some period features, but also added some modern touches and it is just right for a family in the market today.
"You can drive around this town and I don't think you will find another property quite like this one. It has so much character, you see."
Set up slightly from the road, the house makes a strong impression from the moment you open the oak panelled front door and walk inside.
To the right is a big lounge with an open fireplace flanked by a pair of period-correct alcoves, lovely sash windows, and it has a boarded floor. Whether a future owner wants to carpet it or not is a matter for them, but it does look fantastic.
There is a cellar accessed from the hallway, and then at the back of the house you come to one of the most surprising rooms, the breakfast kitchen.
In contrast to the traditional feel of the lounge, this has a much more modern look and the overwhelming sense is one of daylight because, thanks to an atrium roof and a half glazed back wall with patio doors out to the garden beyond, this room glows in the sunlight.
Cream-fronted base and wall units and a pale ceramic tiled floor only emphasise the light in this room.

Catawba College students returning to campus this fall found Stanback Residence Hall, originally built in 1927, transformed after a summer-long renovation. College administrators said a special thank you to the contractors involved in the project during an October dinner at a local restaurant.
The renovation, overseen by Frannie Taylor of Taylor Designs, contract project manager, included structural repair, wiring and plumbing upgrades, new LED lighting, new flooring, refinished hardwood flooring, refinished sinks, showers and tubs, and fresh paint throughout the residence hall. In the lobby, new leather furniture, ceiling fans and 50-inch TVs greeted the 137 students who call Stanback home during the academic year. They also found ice machines on the different floors and vending machine rooms.
Junior Tabitha Taby Turenchalk of Sheffield Lake, Ohio, who lived in Stanback during the 2013-14 academic year and is back living there again this year, said she loves the renovations to the common area.
Now, its beautiful and the perfect place to study and be with all of your friends. Quite a few times a week, we all gather and watch shows together, and its like sitting in my living room at home.
Junior Cody Hummel of Salisbury, who lives in Stanback this year, said he really appreciates the new showers and the fact that the rooms look more spacious because of the bright paint. He noted that the new lobby is great because it brings everyone together.
Contractors who were recognized for their work on the Stanback renovation project included Jeff Duncan, president/owner of JJs Construction of Rockwell; Richard Gould, president/owner of Richards Painting Company of Salisbury; Joel Lawrence, president/owner of Lawrence Electric, Inc. of Salisbury; Frank Grindle, account manager, and John Kersey, project manager, of Flooring Solutions of Charlotte; Brandon Mantooth, project manager of CCI Environmental of Salisbury; Bob Garmon, owner of Garmon Mechanical Company of Albemarle; Rodney Boger, owner of Boger Installations of Linwood; Michael Nance, owner of Nance Hardwoods of Indian Trail; Joel Ousley, owner of American Porcelain Company of Granite Quarry; and Joey Cottingham, owner of Waterworks Plumbing, Inc. of Salisbury.
Staff members from Catawba College who assisted with the renovation efforts included Bill Kluttz, David Najarian and Jeffery Hartley from Facilities, Rodney Rymer and Chad Lewis of IT; Kara Ostlund of Student Affairs; and the Office of Public Safety.
The Stanback Residence Hall renovation was made possible by a $393,000 grant from the Cannon Foundation and a substantial gift from an anonymous donor.

It started with a phone call.
Years ago, Debbie Sardone, owner of Buckets & Bows Maid Service, got a call from a woman inquiring about a price quote for Sardone's cleaning service.
"I gave her our rates," she tells PEOPLE, "and she went, 'Oh I can't afford that, I'm undergoing cancer treatment' and hung up."
It was a literal wake-up call for Sardone.
"I sat there and realized I could have given her the cleaning for free, and I was disappointed it didn't occur to me until too late," she recalls.
"There's no way for me to call that first woman back," says Sardone, 55, of Flower Mound, Texas, explaining that it was in the days before caller ID.
"But she inspired me to change, inspired a policy that eventually became a nationwide nonprofit," she says.
That nationwide nonprofit is Cleaning for a Reason, an organization that provides housecleaning services free of charge to women battling cancer.
Since the organization was founded in 2006, more than 1,100 maid services across the nation and in Canada have signed up to dedicate their time to women in need.
"Maid-service owners have told us it's the most rewarding thing they've ever done in business," says Sardone.

Another Man Jumps White House Fence -
October 23, 2014 by

Another man jumped the White House fence Wednesday and made it onto the North Lawn before he was arrested by Secret Service officers, a little more than a month after another man climbed the fence and ran inside the executive mansion, officials said.
Dominic Adesanya, 23, of Bel Air, Md., was tackled and apprehended by security officers about 20 yards past the fence after he entered the lawn at 7:16 p.m., a Secret Service official said. Adesanya was unarmed, and he was taken to a hospital for treatment. Charges are pending.
Two Secret Service dogs were injured in the incident, and they were taken to a veterinarian for treatment, the official said. The White House press corps and photographers were locked inside the White House as a security precaution.
On Sept. 19, Omar Gonzalez, 42, allegedly breached the secure grounds of the White House in an incident that drew criticism to security procedures that led to the resignation of Secret Service Director Julia Pierson. Gonzalez was carrying a knife and had a machete and hundreds of rounds of ammunition in his car and made it as far as the East Room of the White House before he was tackled, officials said.

A Maryland man hopped the White House fence and assaulted two police dogs Wednesday night before he was apprehended by Secret Service agents on the North Lawn.
Dominic Adesanya, 23, was charged with felonies for making threats and punching and kicking the canine officers, as well as four misdemeanor charges. President Obama was inside the White House when the breach occurred.
Video footage below shows Adesanya jumping the fence around 7:15 p.m., and kicking and punching police dogs on the lawn.
Secret Service spokesman Brian Leary reportedthat Adesanya was unarmed while the dogs, Hurricane and Jordan, were taken to a veterinarian for minor bruising, and were cleared to return to work.
Adesanya was also charged with unlawful entry at the White House complex in a July incident, in which he allegedlytold an officer that hopping the compromised security barrier "was easy and that the next fence to the south grounds of the White House would not be a problem as well."
The former Stevenson University track athlete also told officials that the Rothschilds a prominent banking family were watching him. Adesanya was ordered to attend outpatient mental health treatment and was expected in court on September 9.
Three days after the July arrest, Adesanya was apprehended at the White House complex after he refused to leave the Treasury building and swung his fists at officers. He was given a curfew and ordered to wear an electronic monitoring device. A warrant was issued for Adesanya's arrest after he failed to appear at his September court date.
Wednesday's breach marks the seventh time this year that someone has made it over the White House fence. Just over a month ago, a man with a knife darted over the fence, across the lawn, and into the executive mansion before being captured by Secret Service agents. That incident led to the resignation of former Secret Service director Julia Pierson. Internal and independent reviews of the agency's practices are currently underway.

A man who jumped over the White House fence was apprehended by Secret Service agents, who were assisted by dogs.
The man went over the fence at 7:16 p.m. and ran 30 yards across the north lawn, where two dogs attacked him, and he was subsequently arrested by Secret Service Agents.
Secret Service spokesman Edwin Donovan told the Washington Post, An individual jumped the north fence of the White House. He was immediately taken into custody by canine units and Uniformed Division officers. No shots were fired, Donovan said.
The White House was placed on lockdown and members of the media were held inside until it was lifted.
Video of the incident appears to show the man kicking and punching at the dogs as they attack him. The man, whose name has not been released, is reportedly receiving medical treatment for a dog bite.
This is the seventh such incident at the White House this year, and comes only weeks after an incident in which intruder Omar Gonzalez, 42, made it into the executive mansion armed with a knifebefore being apprehended. Secret Service Director Julia Pierson resigned over the breach of security.
CBS White House correspondent Mark Knollerquoted a Secret Service spokesperson as saying dogs got him. Reuters White House correspondent Jeff Mason tweeted that security at the White House appears to have adopted different tactics in dealing with intruders since the Gonzalez incident.
