From Rose Pest Solutions:
In an effort to stress the importance of science in the classroom while promoting the field of entomology, Rose Pest Solutions will give away more than 1000 Madagascar hissing cockroaches to schools and childrens organizations in Michigan, Ohio and northeast Indiana. The Rose Pest Solutions Madagascar Giveaway Program provides teachers with live insects in a plastic habitat and a factsheet with care instructions on a first-come, first-served basis. The FREE giveaway is available while supplies last and limited to two (2) habitats per school or organization.
Rose Pest Solutions is proud to help introduce the science of entomology to young minds in the classroom, improving their knowledge of the natural world, said H. Russell Ives, president of Rose Pest Solutions. Childrens curiosity makes them eager scientists. We hope this unique program provides meaningful opportunities for discussion, observation and drawing conclusions.
The Madagascar hissing cockroach is one of several similar species native to the island of Madagascar that lives on the forest floor near rotten logs. They are large, non-biting insects with a relatively long life cycle that are easy to care for and fun to observe. Since they are sub-tropical insects, they will not survive in our temperature climate and must be cared for indoors.
Rose Pest Solutions is the nations oldest pest management company that was founded by Solomon Rose in 1860 in Cincinnati. Today, the Troy, Mich.-based company provides comprehensive pest control services for homes and businesses in Michigan, Ohio and northeast Indiana.
Teachers and instructors in these areas who are interested in the program should contact Barb Craig, marketing manager for Rose Pest Solutions, at either (248) 824-7040 or bcraig@rosepest.com. For more information about Rose Pest Solutions and its Madagascar Giveaway Program, visit http://www.rosepestsolutions.com.

Like a master of disguise, a species of fruit fly has proven adept at playing the impostor.
What scientists have for two decades believed to be four distinct species the Philippine fruit fly, the Asian Papayafruit fly, the Invasive fruit fly, and the Oriental fruit fly are actually all the same, a discovery that could help boost pest control measures and eliminate an unnecessarybarrier to trading goods.
Last year, researchers found that the Philippine and Asian Papaya fruit flies were indistinguishable. This week, a United Nations-backed study published in the journal Systematic Entomology, reveals that two more types the Oriental and Invasive fruit flies are genetically identical not only to each other, but also to the other pairing. All four will now be known as the Oriental fruit fly, or Bactrocera dorsalis.
In this most recent study, an international team of researchers marshaled data from molecular, behavioral, cytogenetic, and morphological sciences, among others to pull together evidence proving that several of these species were genetically the same. The team also studied a fifth fly, the Carambola fruit fly, but determined that it is a distinct species.
Farmers around the globe regard the Oriental fruit fly, be it four species or one, as a menace. Arriving inEastern Africa more than a decade ago, it hassince expanded its presence to most other regions of Sub-Saharan Africa. In West Africa the damage has been particularly devastating: farmers saw crop losses of more than 50 percent in some commercial mango orchards.
Besides killing crops, the invasive species turns countries that these flies call home into undesirable trading parters in the international market.
"Those countries who are free of these species want to maintain their pest-free status in order to protect their agriculture," Rafael Argiles Herrero, technical officer for the FAO's Insect Pest Control Section, told the Monitor in an email.
So these countries force imported fruit to go through quarantines to make sure the invasive fruit flies don't enter the environment. But knowing that four of these species are indeed the same means that trade restrictions like quarantines can come down, at least between regions in which the pest is already present, like Africa and Asia.
Pinning down the identity of these fruit flies also makes the battle to bring down their population numbers a bit easier. One effective method of pest control is the Sterile Insect Technique, or SIT, where scientists release into the infected environment male flies that have been sterilized through radiation. The sterile males then mate with female flies existing in the wild, who then fail to produce offspring, allowing the population to gradually decline.
"The SIT can't be applied if mating compatibility between the sterile and wild flies has not been demonstrated," Argiles Herrero said.

Of water and wort: Butcherknife Brewing Co.
Butcherknife Brewing Co. founders Mark Fitzgerald and Nathan Johansing began serving small home-brewed batches of beer in 2011, donating a large percentage to local charities and fundraisers. Now theyve opened up full time in a 4,000-square-foot brewery with a tap room complete with large tasting room and two garage doors opening to a patio at 2875 Elk River Road.
Right now, were producing 60 kegs every 20 days, Fitzgerald says, adding that their beer can be found at 21 locations in Steamboat, including 15 bars and restaurants downtown. But the majority of our beer is sold through bottles and cans.
The brewery prides itself on its recipes, attention to detail and good ol Steamboat water. Its the best water in Colorado, he says. Our location provides us first use off the Continental Divide, which means pure, clean water in the heart of every batch. It also helps to have someone with Johansings stripes on board; he earned his masters degree in brewing from the Siebel Institute of Technology and Doemens Academy in Munich, Germany.
Were thrilled to finally be able to deliver our beer to Steamboat, Fitzgerald says, adding that they plan to deliver more than 1,000 barrels in Butcherknifes first year of operation.
Brotherly beer: Storm Peak Brewing Co.
Its 3,832 vertical feet from the top of Storm Peak to the tasting room of its new namesake brewery at 1744 Lincoln Ave. west of town, and youll be thinking of its wares every turn of the way.
Founded by Colorado natives and brothers Wyatt and Tyler Patterson, the seven-barrel, three-employee brewhouse enjoyed its grand opening Aug. 2. Brewed in a 2,000-square-foot facility with tap room and bar up front, its beers explore a range of styles from light, crisp golden ale to darker black ale and a range of seasonal styles in between.
Were focused on tap room sales and creating an atmosphere where people can enjoy our product and spend some time with us, says Wyatt, whose other brother, Zach, and father, Erik, are also partners in the business. Our equipment is all in the open so people can see the materials and machinery in action.
So far, patrons enjoying the fruits of its tap room have kept any larger-scale distribution plans on hold. The company is selling every drop it makes before it even leaves the premises. Our plan is to grow organically, says Wyatt, who has brewed beer with his brother for years. Eventually well start distributing, but for now its hard enough just keeping enough on hand in the tap room. But were proud to call Steamboat home, and we love sharing our passion for beer with as many people as possible.

Outdoor solar lights and solar garden lights use rechargeable batteries to keep the lights lit at night. Each solar light has a solar panel that charges the rechargeable batteries by the sun during the day. Then at night when there is no sun the light turns on automatically and lights all night until dawn when the sun comes up again. It then turns itself off to restart the process all over again to charge during the day and light at night.
Most solar garden and outdoor solar lights use AA or AAA 1.2 V/600 mAh Ni-Cad (nickel cadmium) rechargeable batteries and some solar lights now come with AA 1.2V/1000 mAh NiMH (nickel metal hydride) rechargeable batteries.
The recommendations are to replace the batteries with the size and type that they original come with for the solar lights to work properly. Meaning that if its a AA you use a AA, if it is a 1.2V you use a 1.2V, if it is a Ni-Cd, use a Ni-Cd, if it is a NiMh use a NiMh.
As far as the mAh (MilliAmp Hours) factor is concerned, the difference here is about how much "juice" or power it will hold and how long it takes to charge it. A 600mAh to a 700mAh is a difference of 100mAh meaning it will have 100 more mAh of charge before it will run out of "juice" or power. The difference in charging length with your solar light will be a 600mAh will take approx. 7.2 hrs to charge and a 700mAh will take about 8.4 to charge. This is important to know when figuring how much direct sun will the solar panel get to recharge the batteries fully.
The rechargeable batteries for solar lights can last up to two years. When you begin to notice that the lights are weaker in brightness, begin to flicker or will not stay on for very long, then it becomes necessary to replace the batteries.
Lamp styles of solar lights vary but most allow for easy battery replacement. The batteries are normally located right under the solar panel.
Below are instructions for 4 different lamp styles of solar lights with pictures.
1. Standard Solar Garden Path Light
2. Solar Fence Post Cap Light
3. Solar Stake Light

Kenny provided the following, If Alabama wants to move forward it is going to have to free itself from the reputation of oppression it has built for almost two centuries. Some may call it freedom of speech but I see it as sedition and hate in an effort to continue keeping us on the bottom and the wrong side of history.
Eyrma responded with, Cowards sneaking around at night, scurrying about like rats to try and spread their fear, weakness, and self hatred. They really should get together and just leave this country and find one of their own.
Nate submitted, I believe there's a simple way of ending racism. Stop talking about. No one in this generation has been a slave. No one has experienced it in over 100 years. These groups such as the KKK, black panthers, Al Sharpton, etc. are keeping racism alive.
Lastly, Todd adds, They have the right to do this. It is in the constitution - for the most part. Just throw the flyer away; freedom of speech; for the record - I do not support them. This is America.
