On-demand home services company Homejoy has been providing cleaning services over the last few years, but its hoping to expand into several other verticals. Today at TechCrunch Disrupt Europe, co-founder and CEO Adora Cheung said the company would continue to test out other services in its different markets.
Today Homejoy is in 30 cities around the world, including London, where the service launched in April. In fact, London is the companys fastest-growing market and is comparable to Homejoys presence in New York City, Cheung said.
Its also moved into other European cities like Berlin and Paris. Over the next few months and into the first quarter of next year, she said Homejoy will be expanding aggressively into other cities on the continent. Even though it has a playbook for launching each new market, every city requires individual care to gain the reputation it needs among cleaning professionals and customers.
Homejoy Imitations Cheaper ThanInnovation
Every time you launch in a new market, its like launching a new startup, she said. That mostly involves building up the supply of cleaners in each city in order to meet eventual demand. Once its reached 100 cleaners on its platform, it considers that city launched.
In addition to new cities, the company also has ambitions for other services. Its been testing out things like handyman and light plumbing and electrical services in certain markets. Thats something it will continue until it finds those which it thinks can scale.
The ultimate vision for Homejoy is not just cleaning, Cheung said. We will be testing out all of these different verticals and scale out the ones that go well.
Homejoy has come a long way since Adora and her brother Aaron first entered the business. Cheung says she cleaned customer homes for about four months in part to meet demand, but also to learn about the needs of the cleaning professionals working on the platform.
It taught us a lot about how cleaning professionals work and the tools we needed to build to make their lives easier, she said. That includes things like the scheduling and booking flow, and creating a better algorithm for matching customers and service professionals. Now Homejoy thinks can apply those learnings to scale other services as well.

First Team Construction, Inc., one of the Lowcountrys oldest and most trusted general contractors, today announced the relocation of its headquarters from their previous location in Summerville to just off of the Mark Clark Expressway in Charleston.
When asked about the companys recent move to the Holy City, First Team Construction CEO David Johnson noted, The majority of our residential and commercial clients are located in the urban and suburban areas of Charleston, Summerville and Mt. Pleasant, so this move just makes the most sense.
Despite the economic downturn that many major metropolitans are continuing to face around the nation, Charleston is making substantial strides in its economic recovery efforts. In 2013, Charleston showed a considerable increase in new home construction, which has since spilled over into 2014, and industrial construction has been on a steady rise in the Palmetto Commerce Park area, as well as other major industrial areas, in the Charleston and North Charleston regions. There is also a projected increase of about 8% in apartment building construction in 2014the largest such growth projected in the nation.
Theres no denying that Charlestons economic growth has been a motivating factor in our relocation, added Mr. Johnson. Our projects range from government building contracts, to new construction homes and all the way down to the smallest of home repairs, so this is a very strategic move for the growth of our company. But the main focus of this move isnt about our growth as a company, its about our clients happiness. We have some of the most loyal clients in the area, so this is more about being there for them in a moments notice when they need us, because their happiness is what matters most to us.
About First Team Construction

First Teams customer-centric approach earns them repeat business from existing clients and new client referrals from those existing clients.
Most projects require several people to a team to be involved in the process in order to do get the job done right. From the very start of the planning stage of the project all the way through completion, First Team understands that process and is committed to being a part of that cycle. They assist with every aspect of this process by evaluating alternative solutions and providing creative ideas to find the best solutions to the projects challenges. First Teams clients do participate in that same process every step of the way, controlling the design and achieving the goals of the projects schedule, quality and budget.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - A bit of magic will be returning to Four Winds Field this week.
Thats the way South Bend Cubs President Joe Hart sees it as the teams stadium returns to a natural grass playing surface.
I think it will be amazing, Hart said. I remember as a kid growing up, and even now when I go to a Major League stadium, whats the first thing you do? Even before I go to the concession stands. You walk in. You dont even go to your seats. You just walk into where you can look out and see the field. I think thats the experience thats going to come back here now.
Players will love it, Hart added. From a play-ability standpoint, having Roger (Bossard) do it, its going to be a Major League field.
Work began in late September. After tearing out the FieldTurf surface thats been in place for four seasons and putting down 7 1/2 inches of sand on the field, the team plans to begin laying sod today, finishing by Friday, Bossard told the South Bend Tribune (http://bit.ly/1s2ZVFV ).
Bossard is no ordinary groundskeeper. Hes put in 12 big league fields, including Wrigley Field, Fenway Park and his home field, U.S. Cellular Field, where he is the head groundskeeper for the Chicago White Sox. Hes been working on White Sox playing surfaces for 46 years.
Its crucial to get the sod down now, Bossard said Monday while praising his crew and taking a short break amid another long day and night at Four Winds Field.
While most people are looking forward to putting their lawn mowers away in a few weeks, the South Bend Cubs are looking forward to finally using one 10 days after the sod is in.
I need three to four weeks of good growth to get my feeder root down a couple inches, Bossard said. And I think I am going to get it. I want to get the feeder roots down at least 2 inches by the time the first snow hits. Ive been saying a rosary.
After the sod is laid, he will begin a maintenance program that will include a couple of different fertilization procedures. He likes the forecast calling for mild weather the next five days. Hes not that worried about any frost.

Four Winds Field Trivia Answers
South Bend, Ind. A new field, a new name and several other changes, Four Winds Field won't look the same as you head into the stadium for the 2015 season and some of those changes are happening Tuesday.
Starting at 7 a.m. crews brought in truckloads of new sod to cover the field and at 10:30 a.m. they started laying it down. The field should be done by Friday. If you are interested in watching the process you can head out to the stadium all week long. Getting all of the sod in will take about 30 trucks full of 24 rolls each.
Roger Bossard, the grounds keeper for the Chicago White Sox is the one installing it. This is actually a patent system that he uses. Our field can take a microburst of rain, which the way he explained it to me is essentially one inch of rain in a very short time frame which equals about 68,000 gallons of water. He says if that happens, within about 20 to 25 minutes the field is ready to play on, explains South Bend Cubs President Joe Hart.
The field is just one of the many projects happening at the field right now. This past weekend they broke ground on their brand new hitting facility. Hart says it will be over 15,000 square feet and it will be done April 1st.
They are also working on changing their signage, something Hart says is a lengthy process, Everywhere you walk around in this ballpark you see a new sign that needs to be changed out. Things are underway right now and we are starting the design work. Our plan is to have as much stuff done by Thanksgiving as possible. I dont want to leave it up to the weather.
They are also working on making changes in the locker room. Hart says they are adding new lockers, putting in new carpet and adding Cubs colors.

Dean Bonnie Thornton Dill addresses the Think-A-Thon, an Oct. 11 brainstorming event for a more vibrant and walkable Route 1, sponsored by the Center for Synergy at UMDs College of Arts and Humaninties, at the College Park Community Center.
College Park residents and students at the citys University of Maryland gathered Saturday to brainstorm a more pedestrian-friendly U.S. Route 1 with music-filled gazebos, tree lined-sidewalks and a grocery store.
The Think-A-Thon meeting at the College Park Community Center yielded outlines, sketches, lists and a lot of notes as about 60 people among them university staff and elected officials sat down to find creative solutions to the challenges of Route 1.
In their discussions, attendees tried to address challenges such as too much traffic and a lack of independently-owned businesses, and tried to reimagine Route 1 as a space with more aesthetically-pleasing architecture, spaces for people to linger, art and music.
The event, organized by the Center for Synergy at the universitys college of Arts & Humanities, is modeled on previous Think-A-Thons held in Baltimore.
The core idea is how to use the strategies and theories of the arts and humanities to address cultural and social problems, said Sheri Parks, director of the Center for Synergy. When you talk about arts and culture, its a very easy way to enter dangerous spaces.
Parks said organizers framed the discussion early on by asking attendees to consider the roles of arts and culture in the redesign of Route 1. Once the different stakeholders began the discussion, she said they brought up other issues crime, family life, business development and food but the conversation focused on solutions rather than problems.
Route 1 needs to focus more on pedestrians...the streetscape. Trees would be nice, said Liesl Koch of College Park. Maybe if we started calling Route 1 Baltimore Avenue maybe it would create a momentum of its own.
Koch said the reason for her suggestion is the word avenue implies a more walkable space rather than a cut-through for motorists.
