Fire Serves As A Reminder Of The Dangers Of Couches Left On Porches - October 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By Maureen Kocot Monday October 20, 2014 6:22 PM UPDATED: Monday October 20, 2014 6:37 PM COLUMBUS, Ohio -

Arson investigators say they've found no evidence to convince them the fire was deliberately set, but investigators believe it was started by a cigarette on a couch on the front porch of the home.

The blaze started in the 1700 block of Summit Street.

"It completely got engulfed in less than 15 minutes," said neighbor Musa Sesaythot. "It was so intense. I've never seen a fire that big engulf an entire building."

Andrew Hurtt grabbed his phone and recorded flames shooting out the windows of the house early Sunday morning. Inside, there were a dozen young people trapped by flames and smoke.

I thought I was looking at a bonfire, said Hurtt.

Investigators say it's hard to believe no one was hurt.

    The aftermath of the fire

They had to act really fast to get out of there, 12 people, said Greg Haggit.

Sightings put Frein on the move - October 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Blood found on porches of two houses in the area of the Pocono Mountains where state police have been searching for more than a month for alleged cop killer Eric Frein does not belong to the suspect, state police said Monday.

State police have concentrated most of the search on the Canadensis and Cresco areas of Barrett Township in Monroe County since identifying Frein as a suspect in the Sept. 12 of ambush on the state police barracks in Blooming Grove, Pike County.

A possible sighting of him on Saturday by a woman near the high school Frein had attended, prompted state police to move the search area slightly south to the Swiftwater area of Paradise and Pocono townships.

State police believe Frein, who had lived with his parents in Cresco, may be relying on unoccupied or vacant cabins and vacation homes for food and shelter.

On Thursday, state police were contacted by two home owners in Cresco who believed they had found blood on their porches possibly belonging to Frein.

One house had blood droplets on the deck of a covered porch, and the other house had a smear on the inside of a rear door of an enclosed porch, state police said.

On Monday, state police said those blood samples did not match Frein.

Lab results showed the droplets of blood were human, but the DNA did not match Eric Frein. The stain collected on the door turned out not to be blood, state police said.

Residents in the Poconos have been on high alert since state police launched the search for Frein after identifying him as a suspect on Sept. 16 because his SUV was found abandoned about a mile north of the Blooming Grove state police barracks.

Frein is suspected of killing Cpl. Bryon Dickson, 38, of Dunmore, and wounding Trooper Alex Douglass, 31, of Olyphant, as they were changing shifts. Douglass is recovering at a rehabilitation facility after being released from a Scranton hospital last week.

Teal Pumpkin Project Catching On - October 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

De Pere - When you take your kids trick or treating on Halloween, you might notice teal pumpkins popping up on porches.

It's an effort to make the tradition safer for kids with food allergies.

Maddie Gerondale, 10, of De Pere doesn't exactly look forward to Halloween.

"Because I don't really ever get to have any candy and everyone else does," she explained.

"She's allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish, eggs, sunflower, sesame, coconut and pineapple," added her mother, Nicole Slavin.

    But this yearis different.

"I like Mine Craft it's really fun. I like my favorite character in the game so I decided to dress up as one," Gerondale said.

Her new found excitement is thanks to a national campaign, which the organization Food Allergy Research and Education is encouraging people to participate in, to make trick or treating safer and more enjoyable for kids with food allergies.

This is how the Teal Pumpkin Project works. You can paint a pumpkin teal, which is the designated color for food allergy awareness or put a flieron your door which lets people know you're handing out non-food items which are safe for kids with food allergies.

"We're going to get glow sticks or glow bracelets. The dollar store is a great place or any other place where you can get large amounts like you would for a birthday party. We'll probably do pencils. Stickers are great," said Slavin.

New construction inches Light Rail system closer to Campus - October 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A few projects are presently being undertaken that will affect university traffic in the coming months. Two of the projects being completed are construction to North Tryon Street and construction taking place near the Toby Creek Greenway. Both projects are in preparation of the much awaited light rail system that will soon be serving UNC Charlotte.

Once the UNC Charlotte Main Station opens, members of the campus community will be able to reach UNC Charlotte Center City in approximately 20 minutes, while avoiding traffic congestion and additional parking costs, said Shelly Theriault Muhl, communications officer with the Department of Facilities Management, in a press release.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is rebuilding two of the bridges on North Tryon Street closest to its intersection with Mallard Creek Church Road. Construction on North Tryon began last Wednesday, Oct. 15. Students and faculty accessing UNC Charlotte on the southbound portion of North Tryon during this time will have noticed that the southbound lane now ends at the intersection with Mallard Creek Church Road.

This portion of North Tryon Street from the intersection will be closed for construction until around May 2015. As the southbound lane is closed, motorists will need to use available detours on Mallard Creek Church Road, West WT Harris Boulevard and I-85. The northbound lane, however, will remain open until the new bridge for the southbound lane is completed.

In light of the road closures, UNC Charlotte commuters are encouraged to adjust their routes and driving schedules accordingly to accommodate for increased traffic.

Patrons who use the 11U bus are notified that the route servicing UNC Charlotte on North Tryon has been adjusted to accommodate construction. The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) can be contacted for more information on these changes.

The construction of new bridges on North Tryon are part of the preparations for the Light Rail system and its arrival upon UNC Charlottes campus. Other construction works are also being undergone to accommodate the light rail. Recently, trees have been removed in front of Miltimore Hall to make way for tracks and the station that will serve UNC Charlotte. This project is being managed by the City of Charlotte Public Transportation Department and is expected to be completed in 2017.

The project to connect the light rail with UNC Charlotte will require a large portion of ground to be elevated to allow for the light rail tracks to be installed. This will require thousands of truckloads of fill material, Muhl said.

Muhl also assured that measures to prevent erosion will be taken to reduce the environmental impact of construction.

A boom in students creates a boom in construction at colleges - October 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

With students heading to college in record numbers, local institutions are constructing everything from new dormitories to academic buildings, hoping to attract the best and brightest students and professors. And many of the projects are emphasizing sustainable design.

The good news is that a number of major institutions [are] poised to move forward with major expansion projects, said Richard T. Anderson, president of the New York Building Congress. Indeed, a recent report from the group found that despite a slowdown in construction by the government sector, colleges continue to invest in their futures.

The citys 105 universities and colleges have spent a combined $2 billion on maintenance and new facilities in each year from 2010 to 2012, and are expected to put in another $10 billion through 2017, or an average of $9.5 million each.

Since 2003, the City University of New Yorks student population has increased by nearly 50 percent, requiring an expansion. According to CUNYs Vice Chancellor for Facilities Planning, Construction and Management Iris Weinshall, CUNYs goal, along with new projects, is to redevelop at least a quarter of its facilities with a Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certification by 2017. As these include many historic and landmark buildings, Weinshall noted, this is a huge and important task.

Lehman Colleges new Science Hall, in fact, which opened for classes in spring 2013, has a LEED Platinum certification, the top of four levels, from the US Green Building Council.

And Lehmans LEED Silver four-story School of Social Work is the first of a three-phase campus within a campus dedicated to the sciences.

The facility was constructed with $70 million in funding provided by New York State through the CUNY Capital Program. Funding of $1.5 million for the rooftop greenhouse was provided by an allocation from the New York City Council.

Other recent projects, including the CUNY School of Law and the Summit residence hall at Queens College, have Gold certification, while Hunter Colleges School of Social Work and Bronx Community Colleges North Hall and Library have Silver.

There are also several research facilities in the CUNY construction pipeline, including an advanced research complex on the City College campus in Harlem, and the new College of Staten Island dormitory, which will aim for LEED Gold.
