Popular Dinton Pastures playground to close for the whole winter - October 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A popular play area at Dinton Pastures will be closed over winter for repairs and to let the grass grow.

The 500,000 nature play space with zipwires and troll holes has been a huge hit since it opened in May.

But it has been so popular it is already showing signs of wear and tear and patches of grass need re-seeding, so the park will close from next month until the Easter holidays in April.

Cllr Angus Ross, Wokingham Borough Councils executive member for environment, said: Im delighted the play area has been such a success and proved so popular since it opened earlier this year.

It is one of the many improvements we have made to the country park, making it a local destination of choice for a family fun day out.

We need essential maintenance in time for the start of next season so everyone can enjoy the play space next year.

I understand there may be some disappointment about this news, but winter is the best time of year to do this.

Id like to remind visitors that there are plenty of great things to do elsewhere in the country park during the winter season.

Families will still be able to enjoy sailing, hire boats, climb, walk and watch the wildlife.

The nature play space now in line for some TLC features giant nest towers, swinging hanging logs, zip wires, a funnel net trap, a play bridge and giant climbing logs.

Shiloh conservation area treats storm water, offers fishing and picnic area - October 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

18 hours 47 minutes ago by Aja Goare - Q2 News

BILLINGS - A plot of land along Shiloh Road now features two ponds, park benches and paved trails, but it's not a park.

The conservation area is the first and only one of its kind in Montana.

It's designed to treat storm water and control flooding on the West End.

Following new state and federal requirements under the Clean Water Act, storm water must be cleaned before it goes to the Yellowstone River.

Grasses and man-made wet lands will naturally clean the water and remove the nutrients.

The $6 million project spans 70 acres of land and took four years to complete.

Funding will continue to come from storm water fees, but the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks also funds an urban fishery on the land, which features small bass and trout.

Visitors can fish in the ponds and the shelters are available for picnics.

Public Works Director Dave Mumford said it's important to respect the area, which opens to the public Thursday.

Barrington turf talk takes a turn toward expansion - October 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Fear not, overworked sod at Victory Field help is on the way.

A committee of about two dozen people are focused on replacing the natural grass surface at one of the busiest athletic fields in town with artificial turf.

The volunteer group has been meeting with officials from Gale Associates, Inc. of Weymouth, Mass., which has spearheaded artificial turf athletic field projects across the region, and most recently worked on the new facility at Portsmouth High School.

Dr. Alex Robertson, a Barrington resident and an orthopedic surgeon, has helped organize the recent local push for an artificial turf surface at Victory Field.

During a meeting with the school committee last spring, Dr. Robertson told officials that todays artificial turf was safer and more durable than regular grass. He said he had witnessed the rough condition of Victory Field late in the fall season after a friends daughter had torn a ligament in her knee in a non-contact injury while playing there.

The school committee voted 5-0 to pursue a plan to replace the grass with artificial turf, and since then organizers have been considering all the options available for a new Victory Field, including expanding the facility.

Most recently, the group decided to explore a plan that would increase the size of the field so that when a new artificial surface is installed it would accommodate not just football games but also soccer, lacrosse and field hockey. Dr. Robertson said that while soccer and lacrosse teams at the high school currently use Victory Field for some home games, the dimensions of the playing surface fail to meet national guidelines for those sports.

For safety reasons, no one should be playing on the field except football, said Dr. Robertson, adding that the field is too narrow for soccer and lacrosse.

But a larger project would result in a larger price tag it was initially thought that the work would cost about $800,000 but the expanded project would likely double that figure. Dr. Robertson said his committee will have a better idea of the estimated cost for the work in about two weeks.

According to reports, Portsmouths project (it included a new field, track and eight tennis courts) cost about $2.3 million, while Narragansett is spending about $3.2 million for a similar project. Both towns are combining privately-raised money with taxpayer funds to cover the costs.

Colourful new market to bring crowds to Wickford - October 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

WICKFORDS new market will officially open for business this weekend.

Almost 30 stallholders will display their goods in the newly-created Market Lane in the re-paved High Street following a 700,000 revamp.

Brightly-coloured gazebos are set to bring in visitors to take a look at the wide range of products on offer, including fresh fish, toys, pet supplies, shoes, bags and leather goods, plants and flowers, clothes and fruit and vegetables.

Three semi-permanent kiosks, which house a barber shop, florist and cafe, opened up two weeks ago, before the official opening.

Basildon Council is also hoping to sign up speciality fresh bread and cake traders to man further stalls, which are expected to open in the near future.

The current traders are moving from the old location, in Market Road, as part of the councils Wickford town centre regeneration project, which includes a new town square and high street refurbishments designed to boost the town.

Phil Turner, leader of Basildon Council, said: The market is another important development for Wickford residents, helping to develop the town as a vibrant centre of our community.

It comes alongside further investment weve made in new shop fronts, public conveniences and swimming and fitness facilities.

Market Lane, which has been given stylish iron entrance arches, street lighting, new paving and tree planters, will open from 9am until 4pm every Saturday, Tuesday and Friday.

Beach neglect costing tourism dollars ratepayer alleges - October 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    PORT ELGIN-

Neglect of the Port Elgin beach is costing the town touristsm dollars, according to life-long resident Wayne McGrath, who was not impressed with the answers he received when he raised the issue at the all candidates meeting Oct. 9.

"It is a sad state of affairs. The neglect is unbelievable.. and this summer was the worst in the last few years," McGrath said after the meeting, adding that none of the candidates actually answered his question about when remedial maintenance work would be done on the beach.

"It has been four years since the Port Elgin and Saugeen Township Beachers' Organization first brought it's concern to council," McGrath said on Monday.

"Senior administration, for whatever their reason, they don't see the value of the beach,"he said, adding they

"ignore" the concerns, not understanding that without the beach, there would be no tourism.

McGrath said the beachers' association has repeatedly tried to draw attention to a "long, long list of everyday maintenance problems" including dirty washrooms, weed-infested beaches, worn benches, litter and aging gazebos that need repainting.

The question was directed to the Port Elgin Ward candidates, including Corrina Serda who said the "Port Elgin beach is one of our greatest assets and we need to treat it as such, because it brings a lot of tourists to our town...," she said, adding if elected, she'd "push" the issue with staff.

Candidate John Rich said they are in the early stages of waterfront re-development process, although the first three plans were "not overly inspiring."

"We have to improve the facilities down there because it is a beacon...we have to improve the facilities and we have to make sure that area is a customer service focussed area..." Rich said.
