UnitedFuture leader Peter Dunne says the controversy surrounding todays decision to conduct aerial drops of 1080 in the Hunua Ranges emphasises the need to take a take time out on the use of 1080 as a pest control method to better assess its efficacy.
"UnitedFuture policy is to have a five year moratorium on the aerial dispersal of 1080, for two reasons.
"First, if 1080 is to be dropped aerially near urban communities or waterways, better information about the long-term effects of 1080 on not just the local bird population, but also human beings, needs to be established.
"In the absence of this, there is a strong risk of adverse public reactions over time making it impossible for any form of intrusive pest control to be carried out.
"That gives rise to the second reason for the moratorium - it provides an opportunity for redirecting some funding towards alternative pest control strategies and methods, and also for a more informed community debate about pest management strategies generally, and the role of 1080 in particular.
"Otherwise, there is a real risk of mounting public opposition to 1080 leading to its being banned before effective alternatives are put in place, and that would be simply disastrous for our biodiversity," he says.
Mr Dunne says a more holistic pest management strategy for our parks and recreation area is required, and sadly, todays decision means that both the Auckland Council and the Department of Conservation have passed up the opportunity to be part of developing that.

NORTHBROOK Cold weather isnt the only bad thing thats starting early this year.
Burglaries are up, too. Seven Northbrook homes were burglarized in September, compared to two in the same month in 2013 and two in September of 2012.
It seems a little early this year, said Mike OMalley, commander of the Northbrook Police investigations unit. Usually October November is a big time for residential burglaries.
OMalley said that it appears that catching one bunch of criminals wouldnt stop the crimes.
Its not all the same crew there are probably two or three crews setting up here, he said.
Some of the homes were entered through rear doors, and some through sliding glass doors. Some of those sliders werent alarmed, and some could have been better protected just by laying a pipe or rod in the lower track to block the opening of the doors, OMalley said.
The locks on patio doors are notoriously easy to foil.
The crimes dont seem to be confined to one or two parts of town, but have been sprinkled throughout the village and beyond. In Glencoe, there have been five burglaries in about the same period of time.
Its not just us, Glencoe Deputy Police Chief Alan Kebby said Monday. Its in Winnetka, too, all over the place.
Two of the Glencoe burglaries, and one of the Northbrook crimes on the 2900 block of Keystone Road Sept. 23 were break-ins of homes under construction. Furnaces, air-conditioning units, washers and dryers and TV sets went out the door.

The historic 106-year-old Makatote rail viaduct in the central North Island is to get a $13-million paint job and refit over the next two years.
The 262m-long and 79m-high viaduct poses a difficult project as work won't be allowed to disturb the habitat of the vulnerable whio, or blue duck, and brown and rainbow trout, which live in the Makatote River below.
To do that, KiwiRail and contractor TBS Farnsworth will "shrink-wrap" the sections of the viaduct they are working on and a vacuum system will suck away the blasted-off lead-based paint to the ground.
About 200 tonnes of the semi-precious garnet stone will be used to remove the old paint.
Parts of the steel trusses and towers will then be replaced and strengthened before a new oxide-based paint system recoats the viaduct.
The project is expected to be completed in late 2016.
The Makatote Viaduct, 12km south of National Park, was the last and highest structure constructed on the North Island main trunk line. It is the third highest rail bridge in New Zealand and is a category 1 registered heritage structure.
Work started on it in 1906 and it took two years to complete.

Historic viaduct to get complex paint job
LAKE PLACID - A pair of local businessmen claim they were stiffed several years ago by National Sports Academy and the school still hasn't paid up.
Ed Winch, the owner of a Keene Valley business Winch Painting Co., said he painted the entire outside of the school and was paid for less than half of the agreed to amount.
"That school ripped me off," Winch told the Enterprise. "I never got paid; I had to hound them. The original person who was in charge of the money (former Chief Financial Officer Steve Preston) knew they didn't have the money to pay me. Every time I had to get money from him, it was like a battle, nickel-and-diming me."

Winch said he has been in business since 1978, and this is only the second time in his career he wasn't paid for his work. Winch charged $13,000 for the painting job and was given $5,000, he said.
Another local company made a similar accusation against the school.
Hiram Oliveras of Saranac Lake, owner of Hiram Home Improvement, said he is owed money for a past construction job. Oliveras said he put siding on the wall out front of NSA, installed insulation and did other handy work.
In 2012, at the beginning of the project, Oliveras said he was told by a school official, "We don't have a budget; we just have to get it done." The school made the first two payments for the work but did not come forward with the third payment for approximately $7,500, which with late fees tacked on the total adds up to about $30,000, Oliveras said.
"I need compensation," he said. "But if I get the original amount, that's cool. If I do the work, I have to get paid."
Oliveras has filed a lien on the NSA property in March. According to the Essex County clerk's office, there are three unsatisfied liens currently on the property. A federal tax lien is also on the property from the Internal Revenue Service for $70,000. It was filed in 2013. Lake Placid Rental and Supply also has a lien on the property for $8,000 owed.
