Shares of American Capital, Ltd. ( ACAS ) jumped 1.72% on Friday, following the divesture of its portfolio company Avalon Laboratories Holding Corp. to Nordson Corp. ( NDSN ). Notably, Nordson is a world-leading precision fluid dispensing systems manufacturer.

The company and its affiliated fund - American Capital Equity III, LP (ACE III) -- received $180 million for the deal. The company has earned 19% compounded annual rate of return over the life of its investment, including dividends and fees.

Based in Los Angeles, Avalon designs and manufactures highly-specialized, single-use catheters and specialty medical tubing products for cardiology, pulmonology and related applications. Primary customers for the company include OEM customers in the cardiology, pulmonology, endovascular, bariatrics, tracheostomy, endoscopy, non-vascular stent and ophthalmic market segments.

Avalon was the first exit for ACE III. In spite of the global recession, the company recorded a solid financial performance, generating double-digit annual revenue and EBITDA growth.

American Capital directly and through its asset management business initiates, underwrites and manages investments in middle-market private equity, leveraged finance, real estate and structured products. Since its IPO in 1997 through the second quarter of 2014, the company has earned a 23% compounded annual return on the exit of its equity investments, including dividends, fees and net gains.

American Capital carries a Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell). Some better-ranked stocks in the same industry include Medallion Financial Corp. ( TAXI ) and Apollo Investment Corp. ( AINV ). Both companies carry a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).

New meeting room dedicated at Randolph Library - October 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

RANDOLPH TWP. -- Mayor Jim Loveys and Library Director Anita Freeman welcomed the community to the library's newly constructed meeting room with an official ribbon cutting on Saturday.

With twice the amount of square footage as the previous room, the room was well received by visitors.

The library's funds paid for the work, which took seven months to complete, at a cost of $285,778.

The past space was 1,000 square feet and had 74 chairs that packed the room. The new space is twice that. Often, adult programs would be filled with attendees from an assisted living facility who would arrive by bus.

Some had wheelchairs or oxygen tanks.

"We had to start removing chairs to get them in. Some really popular programs would book solid. If you didnt register online you didnt get in and some people were not happy about that," Freeman said.

In order to follow fire code restrictions, the library needed to provide more room for their amount of visitors. The new meeting room now has two times the space with built in storage areas as well.

When the building was renovated back in 1985, every space was filled.

There was previously one closet which then became the technology room with computer equipment.

We could still store stuff but not the way we had hoped for, adds Freeman. With the various renovations weve done in the past six years -everything is improved with how we use the space. My maintenance person now has a closet that is big enough to hold her equipment and she has some storage as well which she didnt have before. Now we have more space for everybody.

WASHINGTON (AP) The Obama administration says its launching a makeover for Nursing Home Compare, the government website consumers can turn to when a loved one needs long-term care.

Officials said Monday a key improvement will involve a new electronic reporting system to gather details on nurse and aide staffing directly from payroll records.

Staff-to-patient ratios are one of the most important predictors of quality, and currently the government relies on data reported by the facilities themselves.

Required by legislation, the payroll reporting system will take at least a year to implement. Meantime, more focused inspections and new quality measures will be incorporated into the nursing home ratings.

Separately, the administration proposed an update to regulations for home health agencies, the first major rules change since 1989. Improved quality is the goal.

The Office is closed.

The downtown lounge and restaurant, best known for its dueling piano bar, closed its location at 124 S.W. 8th Ave., across the street from the Capitol, after Sept. 29.

Owner Bryan Lewis said he was looking for an opportunity to start a new business in the space, and the decrease in business during the downtown construction gave him the opportunity. The bar didnt announce a closing, but within a week their phone number was disconnected, the business website was offline and a former Facebook page had been deactivated.

The Office had a massive revamp in 2010 when then-owner Dan Defendorf doubled the facility and added the stage for dueling pianos and other live music. When Dendorf opened The Office Too! in August 2011 at 3251 S.W. Topeka Blvd., he handed the reins of the downtown location to Lewis. The Office Too! closed in March 2012, after which Defendorf said he no longer owned businesses in Topeka, and considered himself a resident of Baltimore.

Lewis tried to cater to a younger crowd with more live music and DJs, according to a February 2013 story in The Topeka Capital-Journal. He primarily works running ESI Live, an entertainment production company that provides equipment and consultation for live events. Recently he has worked to coordinate with Downtown Topeka Inc. and other downtown businesses to bring concert series and live entertainment to the area.

ESI Live is my primary business, Lewis said. Ive been a big supporter for downtown, but The Office went to the wayside a little bit and it was time for a change.

Lewis said he tried to sell The Office in February, and had several businesses interested in the location, but never reached a deal on the sale. Now, in lieu of a solid offer, he is developing a new business venture for the space. His ideas for the business, which he optimistically may reopen at the beginning of 2015, revolve around live entertainment.

Although he attributes much of The Offices slowdown to downtown construction, Lewis said it doesnt dampen his support for the renovation projects.

Part of why I stay in Topeka is I believe that someday we can have a good entertainment district downtown, Lewis said. Im a big supporter of downtown and the construction. Its a big factor in my decision (to close The Office) but after the construction this area of Topeka will have a solid infrastructure.
