Microsoft Research on Sunday demonstrated RoomAlive, a new technology that can transform any room into an immersive and interactive gaming display.

Based on a scalable multiprojector system that adapts gaming content to the physical space, RoomAlive allows users to touch, shoot, stomp, dodge and steer projected content that becomes seamlessly integrated with their environment.

A depth camera, wide-field-of-view projector and computer work together to cover the entire room, including the furniture and people present, dynamically mapping content based on room layout and user position. Pixels can be used both for input and output.

Currently a proof-of-concept prototype, RoomAlive is described in a paper presented by Microsoft and numerous academic collaborators at UIST 2014, the 27th Association for Computing Machinery Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology in Hawaii.

RoomAlive is an expansion of the technology used in the IllumiRoom projection system that Microsoft demonstrated last year.

While IllumiRoom used projectors to extend a TV image beyond the bounds of the screen to cover a whole wall, RoomAlive takes that notion a step further by turning every surface in a room into a reactive environment.

"I think this concept could be very compelling for game enthusiasts," Christine Arrington, a senior analyst for games with IHS, told TechNewsWorld.

"This is the kind of concept that console makers have to develop in order to make the hardware attractive to customers going forward," she said. "As game delivery continues to move towards digital distribution, the question of what the console hardware does for the gamer becomes more critical to answer."

Microsoft's demo videos suggest that "hardware makers are very focused on using in-home hardware to enhance the gaming experience, thereby keeping console hardware relevant even if the future Xbox may look very different than it does today," she added.

However, there are some challenges ahead for the concept, Arrington suggested.

In the video above, audio nerd Jeremy Bell demonstrates his invention, the ScrubBoard, which allows him to scratch tapes with his hands as if they are records.

To make the ScrubBoard, Bell removed the tape head from a regular record player and reattached it using longer cables. Then he scratches the signal over some audio tape that's been laid flat on a board. When he drags the tape head on the tape it plays, and when he moves it back and forth rhythmically, it scratches as if it was a record. So clever.

One of the advantages to the ScrubBoard is that you don't have to hit the crossfader cut off the sound, you can just lift your finger off which means that you can scratch with two hands at once. Still, for a harder super fast cut like what the pros get with a mixer's kill switch, Bell hacked together a solution with just a couple of dimes and a clothes pin.

Bell's scratches in this video are very impressive. Even if the ScrubBoard in its current form isn't quite the most practical solution for scratching, it lets you get some very realistic effects without all of the hardware or even a ton of experience.

And of course, because it's only a half-baked idea, Bell has launched a Kickstarter to try to get a more user friendly, production quality version of the ScrubBoard off the ground. Unfortunately, Bell wants $300 for even the cheapest early bird model, which feels expensive despite being a lot more ambitious than his basic prototype. ADJ voted the Number One DJ by both The Face magazine and Mixmag is making his way to Barnstaple this weekend. London-based DJ and music producer Jeremy Healy, who has appeared at top club nights around the world and is the musical brains behind world-class designer fashion shows, visits The Venue this Friday for a night of dance floor fillers.

Jeremys music career started back in the Eighties when he formed Haysi Fantayzee, a British new wave band, with Kate Garner and Paul Caplin. The band achieved relative success with a couple of Top 40 hits most notably John Wayne Is Big Leggy, which reached number 11 in the UK Chart and number three in Germany.

I had begun sprouting dreadlocks, which got my group an article in The Face, and subsequently some demo time at the EMI studio, Jeremy explained. At this time I lived in West Hampstead with Kate and Paul, in a flat he owned. One night I wrote the lyrics for a silly song called John Wayne Is Big Leggy. I woke up everyone in the flat and announced Id written our first hit record. We made our demos, shopped them around, and somehow, with our deranged songs and strange looks, we landed our first record deal on my 20th birthday.

After Haysi Fantayzee split up in 1983, Jeremy started to DJ on a regular basis. Using London club The Circus as the venue to aid his influence on the capitals music scene, Jeremy emerged as one of the most popular DJs in the country.

Having played gigs to thousands of people in countless countries across the globe during the Eighties and Nineties, Jeremy quickly became one of the most sought-after DJs. As well as playing for legendary club nights such as Cream, Gatecrasher and Clockwork Orange, he made his name mixing several sell-out CD compilations for Fantasia.

An old friend of fashion designer John Galliano, Jeremy found himself with a much prettier crowd during fashion shows in Paris, New York and London where the supermodels strut their stuff to his music on the Galliano and Dior catwalks. Following the success of these shows he has acted as music collaborator for Versace, Jigsaw, Katherine Hamnett and Vivienne Westwood.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - HUD awards $2.9 million to Native American communities in Arizona to improve housing conditions, stimulate community development and create jobs.

Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Julin Castro today announced the money is being awarded to three tribal communities in the state, including the Tohono O'odham.

"These grants will create better housing, spur economic development and support self-determination in Native American communities," said HUD Secretary Julin Castro. "ICDBG funds are an important investment in the remote and low-income tribal communities that need it most. Through this work, we're proud to help our tribal partners expand opportunity in their community by determining on their own, not from Washington, which local projects meet their needs and strengthen their future."

"The state's tribal communities use this funding to support rehabbing or building new housing or to buy land for housing," said HUD Regional Administrator Ophelia Basgal. "The purpose of the Indian Community Development Block Grants is to develop viable Indian communities, including decent housing, suitable living environments and economic opportunities."

For the first time in fiscal year 2014, the awards will also be used through a special program to remediate and prevent mold in housing units owned or operated by tribes and tribally designated housing entities. Nine tribes will receive funding for mold remediation, including the Havasupai Tribe in Arizona, where the village is located at the bottom of the Grand Canyon and mold is common due in part to frequent flooding.

The ICDBG program was established in 1977 to help Indian tribes and Alaska Native villages to meet their community development needs. Federally recognized Indian tribes, bands, groups or nations (including Alaska Indian, Aleuts and Eskimos,) Alaska Native villages, and eligible tribal organizations compete for this funding.

HUD administers six programs that are specifically targeted to American Indian, Alaska Native, or native Hawaiian individuals and families, and federally recognized tribal governments. In Fiscal Year 2014, HUD received more than $736 million to fund programs to support housing and development initiatives in American Indian, Alaska Native, and native Hawaiian communities. Through innovative programming, American Indian and Alaska Native tribal governments have created sustainable and community-driven solutions to their housing and community development challenges.

Arizona Tribal Community Grants

1. The Havasupai Tribe will use its $400,000 grant to renovate 10 homes that have evidence of mold. In this village at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, mold is common due to overcrowded living conditions and frequent flooding. Renovations will be done in bathrooms, kitchens and other areas where mold is present. Moisture resistant boards will replace the drywall in bathrooms drywall and kitchen areas. The tribe's force account crews will be utilized to perform the work which eliminates the substantial transportation costs needed to transport crews to such a remote location.
