Philips sets out goals, showcases innovations for healthcare, lighting - October 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Speaking at the "Philips Innovation Experience 2014" event, which nearly 200 journalists from around the globe attended in Eindhoven - the city where Gerard and Anton Philips turned on their first incandescent bulbs and created the Dutch company 123 years ago - van Houten said Philips considered organisational change as "a way to boost investment and grow faster".

Philips declared on September 21 that it would spin off its lighting operations into a standalone company, possibly for an initial public offering in the future, and combine its healthcare and consumer-lifestyle divisions into a HealthTech company.

The separation will end Philips's more than 100-year-old conglomerate structure.

The CEO said the separation of the legal entities, which would take some 12-18 months to complete, may not be noticed by its customers or consumers at large.

"Our customers and consumers might not see much difference. Many people don't know [our former] TV [division] is already a separate company," he added.

The Dutch giant sold it television business in 2012, after spinning off its semiconductor division - now known as NXP Semiconductors - in 2006.

Van Houten said Philips must keep reinventing itself to stay relevant in its markets, including moving away from categories that are no longer growing, or in which it has no chance to differentiate.

"But the spilt we announced today is different to the TV-business separation that we did earlier. Both offer exciting opportunities, but the two areas have nothing much in common," he said.

Affirming the "A" rating given to Philips, Fitch Ratings said in a report issued shortly after the company's announcement that it considered Philips's loss of synergy from the dual separation of its HealthTech and lighting businesses to be limited, given the unrelated technologies utilised by the two businesses.

"HealthTech will not benefit from the same multi-sector diversification as the existing Philips group, which is exposed to the healthcare, consumer and lighting markets. However, the loss of diversification is, to a large extent, mitigated by HealthTech's scale of operations, leading positions and improved earnings profile," said the international rating agency.

The Ghana Institute of Architects (GIA) on Friday rolled-out a three-year strategic development project aimed at developing the Marine Drive Public Open Space at Osu into a world class recreational facility.

The space to be developed shares a boundary with the Asomdwoe Park in Accra, the burial grounds of the late President, John Evans Atta Mills.

The development forms part of activities being instituted by GIA as part of this years celebration of the World Architecture Day that falls on Monday, October 6, on the theme: Healthy Cities, Happy Cities".

A release signed by Mr Foster Osae-Akonnor, Secretary of GIA and copied to the GNA said the Institute plans to launch the project in November this year to develop the space for the benefit of the entire Citizenry.

As part of the celebration, the GIA will focus on the well-being of communities under the theme: Public Open Spaces and the citizenry, the statement noted.

Meanwhile, in an interview with the GNA, Mr Osae-Akonnor explained that the space would be properly landscaped with a water body, street furniture, and a garden, among others to serve as a recreational centre and tourists joint.

North Landing set for May 2015 completion - October 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Construction is underway at the north end of Branson Landing where HCW Development, LLC, is adding new retail space.

HCW CEO Rick Huffman said its still uncertain what retailers may fill the space.

The tenants that we have, Im still under nondisclosure, he said. Theyre still working out various kinks.

The new 29,000 square feet of retail space will allow for an undetermined number of tenants, Huffman said. The amount of space each store requires will determine how many stores fill the three buildings.

Huffman said roughly 130 parking spots will also be added.

Huffman said there is good diversity of retail stores among interested parties, noting some restaurants could move in.

The estimated cost of construction is $1.5 million.

HCW was able to move ahead with further development after a lawsuit was settled over the ownership of the property.

HCW and the city of Branson has been involved in litigation with Douglas Coverdell and Coverdell Enterprises, Inc., since 2003.

The city and HCW also had lawsuits against insurance companies for their failure to cover legal costs protecting both entities claims to the land.

Renovation business grew out of family tragedy - October 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) The home-flipping and restoration group, Murphy Properties, did not come from its owners watching a lot of HGTV.

Susan "Sue" Murphy and her husband Don lost their daughter Jessica in a 1999 car crash. They experienced another void when their son left for college two years later.

"We were left empty-nested before we were supposed to be," Sue said. "Don and I needed something to put our energy into."

Sue was a former Realtor and said several of her family members had experience with both construction and real estate. Sue and her sister-in-law, Lisa married to Don's identical twin, Doug initially had the idea to renovate houses and use them as rentals. They started doing this in 2001.

"We were all kind of a mess, so there's something about swinging a sledge hammer that's very satisfying," Sue said of grieving over her daughter.

Their first house was across from the fairgrounds in Frederick. They then renovated three others in the Frederick area that are now rental properties.

The women look for old houses that other companies wouldn't want to take on, Sue said. These houses may have structural and mold issues.

"We do a total gut," she said.

In 2006, they had the idea to start selling the houses once they're renovated. Since then they have sold six and they are currently working on their seventh.

"You're getting a 150-year-old house that's brand new basically," Sue said.

Restoration of old Las Cruces fire truck could soon begin - October 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

"Lizzy," a 1930 American LaFrance fire truck seen here at its longtime home in Klein Park, is going to get a 35,000 makeover eventually. The vehicle is believed to be the city's first pumper fire engine. (Sun-News file photo)

LAS CRUCES >> "Lizzy," a mainstay at Klein Park for decades, is going to get a $35,000 makeover. When that happens is still being worked out.

"Lizzy" is a 1930 American LaFrance fire truck believed to be the city's first pumper fire engine.

"Nobody really knows where the truck got her name," said city councilor Miguel Silva, whose council district includes Klein Park, where the retired engine was parked for more than 40 years. "The people who went to the park were probably the ones to give the truck her name."

For a little more than a year city officials have been trying to decide what to do with the relic. Some decisions have been made ast to what becomes of the old gal. Although the vintage fire truck is considered an icon of the Mesquite Historic District because it was in Klein Park for so long it won't be going back there. Instead, Lizzy will be cosmetically restored and will be put on display at the city's main fire station, 200 W. Picacho Ave.

"It's kind of sad it won't be coming 'home,'" said Sally Triste, whose family has lived near Klein Park for more than 60 years. "I played on the truck, with my cousins and friends, when I was a little girl. We loved that truck. ...Somehow, the neighborhood just hasn't been the same since it left."

But Silva said the decision to relocate the old fire truck was an easy one to make.

"There could be some serious liability issues for the city," Silva said. "Our risk management director told us when the truck was removed (from Klein Park) there were a lot of spider webs underneath the truck. It kind of surprised us; nobody thought about looking under the truck and it got us thinking about a long list of liabilities that could be possible if Lizzy was moved back to the park."
